Poor Henry Selick. Imagine everyone thinking Tim Burton made all your best work.

I think an important detail with the Coraline's mom's attitude is that they were just in a car accident, and she's in a neck brace--not only are they stressed from lack of money, she's also probably in a decent amount of pain. It's not an excuse for her being so snippy with Coraline, but in the end I feel like it's a great depiction of flawed but very human adults and how that makes the ultra-devoted perfection of the Other Parents so tempting in comparison.

Some wonderful lines from the book: Other Mother: I swear it on my mother's grave. Coraline: Does she even have a grave? Other Mother: Oh yes. I put her in there myself. And when I found her trying to crawl out I put her back in it.

Interesting tidbit about the man who lives upstairs though, apparently the medal he wears is a liquidation medal - which is a medal gifted to ones who helped with clean up efforts in Chernobyl. Which is why he's blue, its from radiation posioning. And something that helps radiation poisoning is beet root, which is what he eats. So the man upstairs is actually a Chernobyl survivor.

I absolutely love how Coraline's parents are written in this movie. They're a realistic portrayal of what overworked parents going through a stressful time are like: they're curt and exasperated when talking with Coraline, but they still maintain a level of care and empathy for her. On the complete opposite end of that spectrum, the Other Mother is a character that only becomes creepier as you get older. She love bombs Coraline from the moment they meet, and she never shows any emotion other than unnatural cheeriness until she fails to pressure Coraline to do something that she's not comfortable with. I think this movie is incredibly important to show to young kids, despite how many nightmares it'll give them. It tells them two important things: - Your parents are people just like everyone else and, although their stress might get the better of them sometimes, they still love you. - Be wary of people who constantly give you everything you want. If something seems too good to be true, then it probably is.

I’m glad there are other people here who recognize and are sharing the knowledge that Henry Selick is the director behind this film. Credit to him and Laika Studios. Tim Burton unfortunately gets credit for his films from people, even when he had zero involvement in the movie. Selick barely even gets credit for Nightmare Before Christmas when he directed it.

I was confused in why the Mother wouldn't just buy her the gloves at the beginning, but then I put more attention and realized that they were 24 DOLLARS, so, if they're short on money, it makes sense.

I'm glad you guys caught onto the depiction of the parents pretty early on. A lot of reactors seemingly miss the overall situation they are in and immediately call them abusive or neglectful without realizing they are both overworked, nearing a deadline for their jobs, and had just moved to a new home. Of course they would be a bit distant and short with their kid, they can only manage so much.

This movie was originally a book by a man named Neil Gaiman, who wrote the book for his five year old daughter. She was into the more eerie things like this. As you saw in the beginning, the Beldam (also known as a witch) uses the dolls she makes to watch her victims current lives and lures them to her world as a better version of the child's original home and lifestyle. Being an evil witch she has a different diet and it's kind of like the Hocus Pocus witches. In order to continue living she eats the souls of her victims. Then she takes the doll back and makes a new one like you saw in the beginning. So... the old doll before Coraline was a victim that had already lost their life. Pretty dark. Lol.

Fun fact about mr bobinski, the reason his skin is blue is because he canonically participated in the Chernobyl cleanup. Which also means he could be in his mid 50s to early 60s at the youngest. Making his insane acrobatic skills even more impressive.

Coraline wasnt actually directed or even produced by Tim Burton. It was directed by Henry Selick and made by Laika Studios which also did Kubo and the Two Strings, Box Trolls, Paranorman and The Missing Link. It had nothing to do with Tim Burton.

not only is this one of my childhood classics, but When I was still in High School, our Photography Teacher brought someone who worked on this movie one day, and we watched the movie while he had told us a bunch of cool stuff about the movie's production, that's a moment I don't think I'll ever forget honestly

So honestly yes, the mom _is_ kind of a bit of a jerk. Just keep in mind though that we are seeing this from Coraline’s point of view, so it is not going to be entirely objective. And the parents are both under a great deal of extra stress (mom in an accident, financial struggles, major work deadlines etc); I definitely get the sense that under “more normal” circumstances they are both ordinarily better parents than they show as here.

If you rewatch the intro of the movie where the other mother is changing the doll into Coraline, you'll notice that the toolkit does not have just sewing tools. Most of the tools in the kit are actually tools that are used for embalming. In a sick way you could say that she was preparing Coraline for her own funeral

The Other Father is a real one. He drops a couple hints that Coraline isn't safe, like when he pricks himself with the needle, and he says he doesn't want to hurt her. He was probably created to be the perfect dad and he actually does care about Coraline.

So many people don’t pay attention to what is going on with the parents and write them off as neglectful and/or horrible. Mainly because the story is being told from Coraline’s perspective. So let’s breakdown things from the parents point of view: They just moved but clearly have some serious money issues. The mom is wearing a neck brace and mentioned being in an accident. They only gave the movers a dollar tip. They didn’t do much in the way of grocery shopping and were eating mush. The mom made sure to get Coraline school clothes but couldn’t get her the gloves she wanted because they were only spending on the essentials. They started working on their catalog immediately before even fully unpacking. They kept mentioning work and being on a deadline. They worried about what would happen once they finished their work. Once the catalog was finished and they got paid, what happened? They were nicer and less stressed. They wanted to go out to eat to celebrate. The dad was playful with Coraline. The mom got her the gloves she wanted. They splurged on a pizza party for the entire apartment complex. When you see the contrast of the parents before and after, it was clear that money was at the root of the problem. Kids will never understand the intense stress and responsibility of having to provide for a family. And because they don’t understand, they can be selfish, restless, and bratty which just adds to the parents stress. The other mother completely took advantage of the situation to lure Coraline away from her real parents.

If you want another great stop-motion, "Kubo and the Two Strings" is a masterpiece.

Other Father's death in the novel in genuine nightmare fuel. The film went easy on him and the scene in general. Other Mother meanwhile sees the children as a food source.

I know people already corrected you guys on how this is a Henry Selick movie, not a Tim Burton one, in fact, Tim Burton had nothing at all to do with this one (whereas in Nightmare Before Christmas he at least made the original poem and with it the character designs), but I'd also like to point out that this is a Laika movie The studio Laika has made a handful of truly amazing Stop Motion movies so far (in order: Coraline, ParaNorman, Boxtrolls, Kubo and the two strings and Mister Link) and I can only recommend every single one of them Also, some neat fun facts for Coraline: - The original book was written by Neil Gaiman, whose publisher (if I'm not mistaken) was hesitant to publish the book as intended because they thought it'd be too scary for kids, so Neil Gaiman suggested they read it to their own kid first and see what they think. The kid claimed they loved it so it got greenlit. Years later the kid admitted that they were actually scared out of their mind by the story but wanted to know how it'd end so they pretended they weren't scared - Wybie was created purely for the movie version, he's not in the book - Coraline's knitted clothes were actually hand-knitted with tiny knitting needles, there's some amazing behind the scenes footage for it on KZfaq, it's worth checking out (actually, pretty much all behind the scenes footage about stop motion movies like this are worth checking out tbh, but this is one that blew my mind a bit the first time I saw it) -if you pause on the right frame when the Other Mother cracks open an egg while cooking, you can actually see Jack Skellington's (Nightmare before Christmas) skull hidden in the yolk Both, Selick and Burton liked to hide Jack, or at least his skull, in some of their movies like this (also noteworthy in Beetlejuice and James and the Giant Peach) - not sure if it's actually confirmed, but supposedly Mr Bobinsky's blue skin came from him helping to clean up radioactive waste (I think from Chernobyl?), the badge he wears on his chest also points towards this - a popular theory (which is definitely not confirmed though) says that the well is actually another portal leading into the Other World, which would mean that Coraline practically gave the key back to the Other Mother in the end without realizing it. This is based on what Wybie says in the beginning about how people say that if you fall into the well you can see a sky full of stars in the middle of the day and the Other World having a nightsky full of stars even when Coraline comes over during the day

Another stop-motion movie i definitely recommend is Paranorman. Absolutely 10/10 movie, made by the same studio that made Coraline. Zombies and witches galore.

The song the Other Father performs has multiple hints to the Other Mothers true intentions. The most obvious being the song literally says “OUR EYES WILL BE ON CORALINE” referring to the buttons the Other Mother attempts to sew in Coraline’s eyes. Hell, the Other Father saying “So sharp you won’t feel it” before immediately wincing in pain was also a warning.

I love it when people get to react to my favourite movie!!! Since childhood Coraline has always stuck with me, the claymation, the music, the stunning visuals, how relatable Coraline herself always was to me… it’s just my perfect movie, something I’ve never gotten bored of since the day I first watched it. Not gonna lie, the dinner scene is one of my favorite food scenes because the all the food just looked so good, that I would watch this whenever I eat

My first thought whenever there's a feast in some magical place is 'yeah, that's how you become a faerie's slave.'

Not sure if you caught this detail yet, but the store scene when she picked the gloves. They were the best pair, but also the most expensive. It’s clear that her parents are in a tight spot. They’re doing their best and the children don’t always see the struggle.

A little fact: The Great Bobinsky is wearing this blue, red and gold medal. This is a medal that was given to Liquidators of the Chernobyl disaster, so the people that cleaned up contaminated material, did firefighting, monitored the radioactivity and all kinds of other disaster management. No wonder the guy is a little crazy.

There are two very sinister details about the Other Mother and Other World respectively that are subtle but add to the fact that something about that place isn't right. (1) Its always night in the Other World. (2) The Other Mother prepares food, but never eats any of it.

whats interesting about the parents is that when you are a child you think the "others" are so fun and cool, but when you are an adult..it just feels so wrong, something dont add up, and you have much more empathy for the real parents

I love the part where the Other Mother says “It’s sewin’ time” and then she started sewing up the doll. Truly one of the stop-motion movies ever made.

Someone pointed out in a different reaction that the cake's cursive writing has a bit of a secret message. Apparently one loop in an o means it's true, but two loops is false. So she IS welcome, but she's not home.

If you notice, the o in ‘welcome home’ on the cake has a double loop. And back then double loops mean that someone is lying. So although she is welcome, she definitely isn’t home

Thank you for reacting to this classic! I still remember watching this in the theaters with my little sister. It's funny re-watching this as an adult because I now understand all the small details I missed when I was younger, like why the parents, mainly the mom, were so grumpy throughout the movie. One reason the Other Mother comes on so strong and creepy is that she’s starving. Her last victim was the sweet Ghost Girl who was the sister of Grandma Wyborne. After her sister disappeared she locked up the door l, subdivided the home, and refused to let anyone who had kids rent the apartments-until maybe she got a bit senile or made a mistake with Coraline’s family. The Other Mother probably usually waits weeks before offering the button eyes but based on the age of the house and the images of the ghosts, she was likely overdue for a meal and jumped the gun too early.

The reason why the cat disappears behind the sign like that at the end is to signify that Coraline never made it out of the dream world. In the book, the ghost children stated that the moment you physically see the Beldam (other mother) you'll never see your true mother again. Which also probably explains why the moment she "defeats" the beldam, her "real life" magically takes a turn for the better. Almost like a never-ending loop.

The two movers in the beginning, and especially the guy receiving the dollar at 2:35 is in tribute to the Ranft Brothers, as the puppets are meant caricatures of real-life brothers and animation artists Joe and Jerome Ranft (Jerome, a sculptor at Pixar, provides the duo’s vocals). Joe Ranft worked with Henry Selick on both The Nightmare Before Christmas and James and The Giant Peach and was a valued member of the Pixar family. Selick’s tribute is a beautiful, fitting salute to a colleague and a friend (Joe passed away in 2005). Joe was also known for many roles like Squeakers the penguin in Toy Story, Jacque the Cleaning Shrimp in Finding Nemo, and even the caterpillar from A Bugs Life! My late grandfather was also childhood friends with them! :)

There's a theory that says that Beldam was the original owner of the pink palace until a day she fell into the well, the bottomless well is a magical portal to the other world where is night everytime of the day thats why wybie said at the beggining people could see stars in the bottom of the well if they look too much, also the coraline shaped garden is real its just shapped like beldam's face in the real world.

The movie left out this one crucial detail that the original story emphasis which is. The alternate reality is alive and “The Beldam/Other Mother” was just the one fueling it with souls so it could continue to exist.

Actually not Tim Burton, it was Henry Selick and Laika studios. But the book it's based on was written by Neil Gaiman😂 And also, the passage to the other world isn't an "anus" it's an esophagus, apparently the inside of an unknown entity that the other world exists within. Creepily enough, when Coraline made her way through the passage In the books she said she felt as if "something was following her through the passage", as if there was something else that lives in there too.

There was a real popular theory going on that the well is a second portal to the other world As where Wybie mentioned at the start of the movie "that if one was to fall in the well and look up, they would see a sky full of stars, even in the day-time." In the other World, it is ALWAYS night time. I love how so much hidden details are shown in this movie, here's my list of some: Portal Door Compared to Well: 10:08 - 53:14 Other-Fathers cryptic song: 11:07 (it was cut but he said "our eyes will be on Coraline) Other Mother telling Coraline what the Other Father is: 19:45 - 43:47 Other Mother giving a hint where Coralines parents are: 42:50 - 50:03 (sound of water dripping) And there's way more stuff! This movie was amazing 10/10 movie!

If you think the movie is nuts you should've read the book by Neil Gaiman. No flashy colourful tunnel- the tunnel in the book is more like the throat of something the book only describes as "slow and ancient". No rats made of sand- when the cat kills them they actually bleed. Also Coraline's parents aren't home once in the book. The book begins with them at work and they never make it home. Coraline has to use her pocket money to survive on her own in the house for several days. Also- the whole thing with the hand? Yeah, in the book the hand is not made of nails. It's just an actual, living, bleeding hand with really long fingernails. And don't even get me started on the scene with the other father... in the movie you have that chase sequence with the mantis bot through the garden... in the book that takes place in the house's basement and the other father... well let's just say he is slowly deteriorating into sludge.

The book of life is NOT a coco knock off! It's a great movie, though it does share some themes of Coco. I highly recommend watching it, it's really worth a watch if you never saw it!

If you liked this movie, the studio made plenty of other underrated beautiful one ! I especially think of Kubo and the two strings, I feel like there isn't a lot of people who talks about it and my god this is such a masterpiece in every aspect of the term. This isn't perfect obviously but it really deserves some attention !

Something to look into is that there are four eldritch beings in the world of Coraline. The Beldam/Other Mother, of course, is one, and the cat is another. The book has a third creature, the tunnel between the Pink Palace and the Other Mother's world. In the book, Coraline notices that the Beldam is scared of the tunnel and refuses to go into it until the very end. When Coraline is running through the tunnel back to the Pink Palace, she reaches out her hand to touch the dark wall, only to pull back in horror at feeling warm fur. Later, she touches again and it feels slimy and hot, like she's touched a mouth. The tunnel is the throat of some terrible beast that cannot be seen, but it watches Coraline, and it is malevolent. The final monster is the Fog. If you watch the background, the fog sweeps in thicker and thicker as the Beldam draws closer. In the Other world, the Beldam's territory ends at a vast white expanse, and later unravels into it. That's the Fog, and it's far more powerful than she is.

The predictions you guys made in the start would have been so cool for a movie! The others becoming dolls. The dolls stealing the places.. so errie!

This was my absolute favorite movie as a child right next to ponyo! I memorized almost every line when i was little, i knew every scene each time i watched it. I’m glad you guys enjoyed it Also… the book of life is NOT a coco knock off, it came before coco and is another childhood favorite of mine, you guys should DEFINITELY watch it, i think you guys would like it😁

All these years later, i realise the well works as a trap because its a fairy circle. (The mushroom circles you can sometimes find)

I hated her mom and the dad to some extent as a kid but as an adult, I understand how they're feeling and side with them, I don't think Coraline is awful now but definitely selfish with my newfound respect, humbleness and understanding for the two parents.

This is my favorite childhood movie! It felt so refreshing to see some thing genuinely spooky and unsettling made for child audiences. That was good and not campy spooky.

If I had a nickle for every time Henry Selick's work got mistaken for Tim Burton, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't alot but it's weird that it happened twice.

Afeter this being my favorite movie for almost 15 years, i finally understand why the parents are so dismissive and frustrated with Coraline. 1: They both seem very stressed with their work. They probably don't usually write about plants, that's just the subject of this particular catalog. So for all intensive purposes, they're probably writing about something they have no experience with. 2: They JUST moved, which by itself is stressful. 3: They got into a car accident recently, which likely means serious medical and motor vehicle expenses. 4: They are clearly not always this neglectful, since Coraline would not expect more form them if this was the norm. This is a difficult moment in their lives, and as much as it may hurt to relegate their daughter to the background, they have more important things ro focus on than keeping her from boredom.

I love the implications of the book. Any explanations on what the other mother is and what this place is are only vaguely explained. But the sense you get is that these are ancient eldritch horrors, and what's worse, the other mother isn't the scariest thing there. The corridor itself, Coraline realizes is a living thing. As she's escaping she touches the wall and it feels like it's the inside of someone's mouth moving like it's drawing breath while winds start whistling and Coraline knows that the corridor is much older than the other mother "It was deep, it was slow, and it knew she was there." Then there's the rat's chants that pop up throughout the book. "We are small but we are many, we are many but we are small. We were here before you rose and we will be here when you fall" "We have teeth and we have tails, we have tails and we have eyes We were here before you fell, you will be here when we rise." "We have eyes and we have nerveses, we have tails and we have teeth, You will get what you deserveses when we rise from underneath" Side note, never listen to this in audiobook format. These chants will haunt your nightmares.

The mom is also kinda pissy in this movie due to an accident that happens just before they move in, and it's sort of implied that Coraline may have been at least partly responsible for what happened, hence her neckbrace.
