@@tribex11 Great question. I have bred crickets but only for the pinheads to feed very small geckos. I don't raise them up because of the time it takes. I would suggest though, if you do, #1 tip is to keep the youngsters humid and fed with veggies (changed often so they don't mold).

Which then means i have to clean out/reset my bin. (Info i was told by other breeders when i first started, is that correct by the way?)but i definitely would like to know How you work around or prevent that issue with your bins?? I almost have to go back in to remove anything fresh no longer then 24 hrs. Plz help thanks
@SupremeGecko
@SupremeGecko 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry for the very late reply. The secret is all in the amount you feed. Dubias do not have to have veggies in their enclosure ALL the time. Provide a nice grain food (wheat bran/oats/corn meal) and feed only the amount of veggies they will eat in about 3-4 hours. It will take a couple feedings to get use to the amount but start small and work your way up. Please let me know if this helps.

Hey first id like to say sorry for my long "essay" lol im not so good at keeping it short So question number 1, i dont know if i missed the part or not but im curious about the temprature and how you keep their tempratures i know from other videos i have seen they had said the temprature has to be around 85°F to 90°F? Is this true and how does one keep that temprature without things getting way to hot. And second question, what stage of cockroach would you feed to an adult bearded dragon? So about 12 inches from nose to base of tail i know roughly its about 5 cockroaches for an adult beardie but the size of cockroach for this specific animal would really help as im switching her from leafy greens all the time to maybe leafy greens and bugs (cockroaches) if that makes sence. I personally am new to beardies but my hubby has alot more experience than i, however on that note i dont think hes ever fed beardies cockroaches before so this experience is both new to us so im doing my own research on this matter because it is a healthier option for this type of lizard. Im starting with 2 males and 2 female deathhead cockroaches as dubais are illegal where im from and i dont think there is much a difference with temprature with this species but thats also something im going to definetly find out soon too, im wondering now if this colony would be far too small for what i need and it might take abit longer to start getting it going Thank you for your time in reading, i hope to hear from you guys soon :)

No apologies necessary. This was more on sorting than keeping/care. 1. 80 degrees F We have a room that stays 80. But you can use a heat mat and thermostat on your dubia container. 2. Medium size. Try it! If too big, feed smaller :) Finally, hold back half your newborn to grow out for the next generation of breeders. Best of luck!

so my question is with a 68 gram or 75-150 gram monthly yield what size colony do u have? do you have any good methods on sorting the frass from the nymphs? also when classifying the dubia by size do you leave them time to go through the holes or do u give them for example 30 seconds to get through the hole and if they dont get through then they are classified as that size?
@SupremeGecko
@SupremeGecko 4 жыл бұрын
I have 4 colonies actually. Each one has probably 250 females or so. For separating from frass, not a good method other than throwing an egg carton on the frass and a carrot on top then collecting ever couple hours. When separating, I shake the containers every 5 minutes or so and then collect probably around 30 minutes later. Let me know if this answers your questions.

I have a couple of questions if you don't mind. I know the ideal ratio is 4/5 females to 1 male. If you have a huge bin, how do you determine if you have the correct ratio? I can't imagine separating them out by hand to get the right 4:1 ratio. My second question is how do you separate the tiny babies from the dirt when cleaning bins? Or do you just leave the frass and tiny babies in the bin? Thanks. Love your videos.
@SupremeGecko

Thanks Joyce for the questions and for watching the video. :) No, I do not count them out. I do a small section, like 10 males and 40 females- then I try to match the ration (per size of the group) to get my big colony. It's all by feel and close enough for me. Each collection we do (1/month) only includes shaking off the egg cartons. Once every 4-5 months I will clean completely and collect the babies from the frass. Not an easy job. Hope this helps. How do you clean the poop out or how do you get the babies out of the poop I'm assuming it doesn't really bother them since it's not cleaned out that often but I would still like to know how to clean them out of the poop. The only thing I can think of is separate the adults dump all the poop into another container and feed that container of babies until they're big enough to collect in one of the buckets that have holes.
@SupremeGecko
@SupremeGecko 3 жыл бұрын
After collecting all the adults (then setting them back up in an adult container) and the babies from the egg cartons, we do dump the frasse and the babies into another big container. But we don't grow this container out to get adults. We put egg cartons on the frasse horizontally and knock off the babies when then collect. We collect the babies from this container several times a day for 2-3 days until almost all the babies are collected, then hand collect from there.

When you say “discard” the males, where do you put them? Sounds silly, but I don’t want to just throw them away. Since it’s not an invasive species, can I throw them outside? We live in nh. Thanks!
@SupremeGecko
@SupremeGecko 4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not. It is so difficult to include EVERYTHING in these videos (and to be honest, I forget to mention half the info I intend to add before actually doing the videos). Please do not discard back into the wild. In about as humane a way as I can, I freeze mine for a couple days before throwing them in the trash. Occasionally, I will offer the, to friends that have larger animals that will take the dubias.

Thank you for your info! But freezing them won’t hurt them? I definitely don’t want them to suffer. Also, our dubia colony we’ve had about a year and half and have never taken any males out before and it’s thriving! Do you think the ladies are stressed? I definitely don’t want them to be. But since they are doing so well, do you think I could just continue to leave the extra males in if the colony is making enough for our collection? Thanks again for getting back to me!

@@JM-wu3fs What are you using your dubia colony for. If for feeding other animal, its similar to putting the males in the freezer. I don't want any animal to suffer but these are feeder insects. If your colony is thriving, then leave it. If the ratio though is anywhere close to 1.1 to 1.3, then the females could be getting a bit harassed.

How do you transfer all of the Dubias from their breeding tub without getting vermiculite into the sorting bucket?

I don't use vermiculite. But, I don't get any frass (or at least very little) because all the roaches stay on the cardboard eggshells and I only pull them out. But, when I do have to clean the tub, that is not easy to separate the babies.
