For the month of October RocketJump FRIGHT School releases spooky, horror-themed filmmaking tutorials!
In this video, Kevin goes over his approach to creating an unseen character or monster through sound design. Whether you're creating something funny or scary, there are a lot of factors to consider and communicate, including tone, location, physicality, proximity, and character intent.
But we want you guys to create your own unseen horror to terrorize Joey! Click on this link to head over to the official discussion for this video to download the scene:

Ready to sound design but don't have any sounds? Check out this other forum post where we discuss different sound resources that are available:
j.mp/FindSoundFX
And, for the rest of October 2016, our original RJFS contact mic recordings are available and FREE for you to use! Download them here: j.mp/RJFSSounds (They'll be gone Nov 1st!)

Questions about our sponsors and how they work? A video on that soon, but we have an open policy and can answer your questions directly on our forums: discuss.rocketjump.com

Thanks for watching! More videos at school.rocketjump.com!
We are live on KZfaq every Thursday at 4PM PST!

Always excites me to see how a film or scene comes together. I've researched a lot on imagery, the lighting, colour, mis en scene & how they can effectively communicate the creator's story. However I feel none come close to how good sound design profoundly & immediately gets a message across. It connects on a more deeper, primal level that gets all sorts of signals firing in your brain without you realising..../rave

How is the scary hit done ??? Where it goes black
@KevinSenzaki
@KevinSenzaki 7 жыл бұрын
There's no one way to make that kind of hit, but there's two broad techniques that are used a lot: layering and processing. Layering's just combining different elements together to build up the overall effect you want (say, a higher-pitched sound like a metal screech or flame whoosh, paired with a lower rumble like a shaking file cabinet, etc.). Processing is applying effects to an element or multiple elements to transform and shape the sounds (like reverb/echo, or different kinds of distortion). While I don't remember off the top of my head what I used in that exact hit, I believe it's a piano string pluck with some guitar pedal distortion on it, plus a delay effect (giving it that eerie echo quality). Some professional libraries of hits will come with "construction" folders that give you isolated elements, and it's interesting how they're pretty much all just built out of a few fairly mundane sounds, just pieced together and processed to sound cool!
