As a decent singer but HORRIBLE speaker, my mind is blown. I only recently realized I don’t breathe normally unless I’m asleep or paying attention to my breath. It took many years to correct that issue in my singing, and it never dawned on me that speaking requires the same amount of breath support. Great video.

I think it has to do with anxiety too, I don't know why but I noticed I don't breath properly while I'm speaking English, which isn't my mother tongue. So I assume my anxiety when speaking a forgein language might affect my breathing too besides the fact that I don't know how to control breathing.

I been suffering tremendously whole adult life because of not being able to breath properly while speaking. I become tense, and my eyes become teary. It coaxes me to feel embarrassed etc. the whole chain of reactions… This problem prevented me from progressing in my profession. After many years I detected incorrect breathing is the issue, but still suffering. It is getting worse when I am feeling unwell or tired or stressed.

Now my next problem is how I'm going to apply this breathing while reading. It might look easy at first but it's hard for me to breathe in my stomach while reading, probably because I'm not used to it. But hopefully, I'll be able to execute this method soon since we have multiple presentations to do at school.

I have found that sports like running or swimming help. as well as breathing meditations, they help you learn how to control your breath. Of course, it sounds a lot easier than it is. It could be that you simply need to relax a little when speaking. So talk to yourself positively in your mind, if you find yourself feeling anxious or nervous. Don't be afraid of taking pauses to catch yourself. It's all practice.

Holding your breath is bad. Breathing through your nose is fine when you don't speak. When you speak or sing, and you need to keep pace/ tempo, there is no time to let the breath in through your nose. Also, trying to breathe in fast through your nose will create a lot of tension in your neck and shoulders, which would create Accessory Breathing conditions right there. Have you ever seen singers taking the time to breathe through their noses while singing? Breathing in through your mouth while producing the sound will help you to keep out excessive tensions. Yes, it dries the back of your throat, but that's why you need to have some water around to moisturize your vocal cords. For more information about Speaking on the Breath with EASE visit www.AlexanderTechworks.com
