Yes the 45 rpm does disturb the flow and getting up every 15 minutes to change it is not good It should have been a 33 RPM release as the sound difference is very minimal

I received mine yesterday. The sound quality/ mastering is excellent. There is a moderate amount of surface noise, however. Side 4 has been the most noticeable, borderline unlistenable in some sections. I have not finished listening to all four lps, so I’m hoping for better results from the last two. In past experiences, multiple listenings along with continued cleaning can significantly improve surface noise issues.

Update- I have now listened to all 4 lps, and the last two had minimal surface noise. Also, I have cleaned side 4 to a point where it is almost silent. This rerelease by Acoustic Sounds is simply mind blowing sonically, and I am sure with continued listens and cleaning that it will continue to sound better and better, giving this amazing album the justice it deserves! P.S.- I can’t wait for Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot!

I bought Lamb when it came out and all the pressings had faults, so you were lucky with the shrink wrap version. I took it back twice no luck, so I eventually got an import but that is "quiet pressing" because of the length.

Peckham would sometimes EQ a bump in the mid bass to make recordings more punchy.

This was a great sounding recording. It was done at a house they were renting, using a mobile unit & John Burns got a great drum sound. I had the Atco version when I was at uni, but it was fairly noisy and, after I updated my system with a new Philips TT, I bought the UK Charisma version around 1977 or so. The Charisma LP set has custom labels by Hipgnosis on the discs, but no innersleeve art or lyrics. It is very quiet compared to the Atco. I bought the original US CD, which was terribly noisy (probably sourced from a safety copy tape). (I never heard the "Definitive" version of the CD.) The SACD is quite good, but the remix is not much different from the original. Very cool in surround sound! I think the complaints about the Genesis remix-remasters were mostly about the mastering of the 1st box set-- the post Peter & Steve years, although I enjoy them.

Most complaints I have heard were about all of the remixes not just the 1st box. I can’t say I have done direct comparisons though so I can’t speak to my feelings towards them.

Kevin Gray and Ryan K. Smith are my 2 favourite audio mastering engineers at the moment. Always love to see their etchings in vinyl records^ But still, I like George Peckham the most, but he is retired since years. You know, when I see PORKY or STERLING in the dead wax of a vinyl record I always try to buy it instantly, because I know that it will sound great^@@charlesgund4812

Thanks for review. I have the first UK release, but that album is hard to listen to me because of over production and thin voices, which are amplified by effects precisely because they are thin and weak. All that together makes this album hard to listen to me. I don't think I like that album. I have it in my collection, but I don't know why.

Back in 2004 after the remixes by Nick Davis, the guy got a lot of pushback on his work. Most of it is about brick walling and reverb. Nick didn't have the original gear used in the initial mixes and had to approximate. My beef is that the balloon burst in Colony of Slipperman is missing. Plus, I would have liked a bit more nylon string guitar doubling Tony's organ parts.

I noticed that SFX missing as well. Perhaps the original element wasn't available? I do prefer Nick's version of "Los Endos" from *Trick of the Tail.* I always thought David's trick of moving to mono then stereo was kind of cool, but definitely a "gimick." Those recordings all had a different mastering engineer also, and that's where some compression may have been used.

I got my copy last week, and I agree that the sound is awesome, and I love the packaging, too but there were more surface tics on those 4 LP's than there were on all 13 LP's together on my Miles Davis box set from VMP, pressed exquisitely by GZ. More surface tics than anything I've gotten new recently.

Yeah I have been pretty disappointed with AP standard vinyl releases over the last couple of years. The UHQRs have been getting better (they started out noisy) but the standard vinyl has been noisier than the Mofi I have been getting at the same time.

@@mikewest1542 it’s not a new thing. Mid to late 70s US vinyl especially was worse with the oil shortages. There are good pressing plants and bad ones. I have been noticing a slight improvement lately as I think demand isn’t as high as it was during Covid and new plants are opening up.

@@trueaudiofiles8453 This debate is common among the purists (ref. the debate on the recent remixes of the Beatles). For audiophiles, sticking to the original worn out tapes released on expensive remasters is not systematically the best option and in this case demuddling the poor mastering of the Genesis early 70s era is the main benefit of ND's 2008 remixes of the early Genesis albums so I definitely own those too and find them very fresh and airy and enjoy the difference. Why not own an OG and a remix when one likes an album after all.
