As a follow up to Ep. 39 where we talked about snare beds, this week is about the extreme ends of the spectrum for snare wire count- from 16 all the way to 42 strand wires, and how the snare wire count affects the sound and behavior of your drum.
Wires used for this video were the Puresound Concert 16-strand and Gibralter 42-strand wires on a 60's Ludwig Acrolite with Evans UV1 batter and Snare Side 200.

God, I love this channel so much. Unlike the other tip channels, y'all don't clickbait, and actually say helpfull things.

That's something I really don't like about some channels. Clickbaiting with most stuff is just annoying, but I feel it's a bit different with regards to music. When you go to a video to learn about music, and then you are lied to, it feels to me like a teacher trying to manipulate and take advantage of me. I think it's especially gross to deceive people innocently trying to learn.

I dig that Cody uses so many old Ludwig drums for these videos. I own and play 50's & 60's era Ludwig drums. Your drums sound familiar. Almost like home. I enjoy applying these lessons to my own drums. These old tubs now perform at their best. Dig it, Cody. I believe, one day, these videos will become legendary in the drumming community. They already have. Thanks fellas.

I just tried 12 Strand Ludwig wires on my 6.5 Copper Phonic and I’m thrilled with the sound. It’s surprising how much snare sound you can get from a 12 strand set. On the other hand, I have a late 70’s 6.5 Gretsch and tried a 42 strand set of wires and it sounds great. Snare beds like the Holland tunnel.

With respect to the 42 strand wide snares, I would estimate around 1974 or so is when Gretsch pushed this concept. I recall this vividly and went to our local music store to inquire. A friend of mine had a Gretsch set and went this route when it was broadly announced. Many of my other percussionist friends went this route as well as myself changing over from 20 to 42 on a 5.5 x 14" acrylic Fibes snare and a chrome 6.5 x 14" Fibes snare. The sound was impressive indeed. As you accurately point out, it was a lot more snare sound. I recall when the snares were loosened in Off mode, I'd adjust the snare plastic straps/or strings to the reso head just a minute distance (about an 1/8th of an inch evenly on both sides) vs. hanging. This prevented the necessity for over tightening/torquing the snare control knob. My snare strands rarely if ever popped. The factory strings that are equipped with the snare strand might not always be the best as they add a small degree of separation from the reso head. To minimize this gap further, a fishing line with a higher pound pull or even dental floss might be an option to experiment with.

I have a Sonor 14x5.25 Gavin Harrison Protean snare drum. It uses 8 strand wires. It also comes with a copper set and brass set in different configurations. I thought I wouldn’t like them but I couldn’t be happier with the tone and articulation you get with only 8 strands! I have a mid-70s Pearl steel snare (#4515) which never seemed to open up. But when I put in 42's, it finally came alive. True it kind of compresses the sound of the drum when you really lean into it, due to the sheer weight of more strands. But in sonically dry environments and at low to moderate playing levels, the extra sustain of the snares helps give the drum a "happy" character. My other snares (13", 12", 10") are all on thinner "normal" wires though, and I have no plans of changing them because they sound fine as is.

I made my own snare using a mapex 8x14 snare shell, and all dw hardware and a set of 42 strand wires. The shell was a 6ply maple shell, and I sticker bombed it before I put it all together. I LOVE it!! It sounds great, and with the dw mag throw off and 3p butt plate I can get a few different snare sounds. Oh and to finish it off I put the pdp wood hoops on it. All together ive got like $450 in it, but it sounds like a drum worth double that. I also have a set of 20 strands I can throw on it too, but after I put the 42's on it I haven't taken em off.

Very interesting, thank you! The thing I've taken away from this, most of all, is that rather than changing components (heads/snare bed/hoops, etc), I need to get a better understanding of how to use what I already have. I've found a huge difference in my snare sound if I don't fit the snare bed correctly.

Thank you for another great video.. I learned the hard way about matching the width of the snares to the bed.. oops.. On my 13" I ended up getting the PureSound 'double-wound' which is basically 40 wires within a couple of inches wide.. absolutely love it.. somewhat 'brash' perhaps and it takes some experimenting regarding tension.. They are closer to that vintage sound than any other (non-gut) snares that I have tried.

Good video. I recently purchased several older Ludwig drums that had 12 strand concert snare wires, and have noted that there is much less buzz from electric bass and guitar when I play live music using them in a confined stage area. If snare buzz is a problem in that situation, I think it might help to go with fewer wires. I don't notice any significant reduction in "snap" with fewer wires, however.

40-42 snare wires can be very useful in case you have a "not so good" snare drum.it can add more bottom end and more definition for ghost notes and rolls.and since is wider,it can be like a little bit of dampening in case you have some unwanted overtones.of course, maybe you will have to make some adjustements to achieve the sound you're aftter.but if you're on a budget, this will improve any cheapo snare.good video !!

I’ve always thought 42 was overkill BUT I bought a Tama SLP Black Brass snare and it came with 42 strands and it sounds so good and beefy and it’s not too jingly with the tiniest bit of vibration. It really depends on the drum itself. The slp Black brass works perfect with the 42s, I usually never change out the snare wires and keep it with what Tama puts on it and I’ve always liked how each Tama snare came. The slp dynamic bronze sounds great, the slp g bubinga sounds great, and the slp Black brass sounds great.

I just slapped a 30 strand Puresound Custom on my 1988 Artstar Birch and I think that might be too wide for that what seems to be a narrow snare bed. I didn’t get to lay into it yet but I had to whack it fairly hard for the wires to get moving. Might have to go back to the 20 strands. Merry Christmas guys. Once again.....excellent video with nice in depth analysis.

+1 on the channel! As to snare wires, I prefer the dryness and articulation of Puresound Concert series. They are made out of a hardened steel alloy (stainless?), where most wires are made of untreated, softer, raw steel; a noticeable difference. They sounded good but I tend to play a lot of rimshots and the snare sound was simply getting lost. Great vid! I have a Ludwig LB402B and 8x14 Black Magic which both came with 16 strand wires. I bought a couple pair of Gretsch 42's and didnt have much luck at first- they just sounded sloppy, especially on the 402B. Way too much "sizzle". I re-leveled the wires following Kenny Sharretts' video and they both sing now. Lesson being, the 12's, 16's and 20's seem to be a little more forgiving of misalignment, but the 42's will get ya if they're not aligned right. And they weren't off by much either. At least that's my experience.

I have a Black Panther Machete I experimented with...tried 24strand, 42 strand...wound up going back to stock 20 strands bc just sounds best imo. Then again Black Panther's come with quality wires to start. Biggest improvement for my drum was changing heads. I have a Remo Controlled Sound reverse black dot on top...perfect for this drum.

In the early 70s, there was a 24 strand with plexiglass end blocks formed around the end. Caused my 6 1/2 Superphonic 402 to explode! They’re gone and couldn’t find them anywhere. 😢

Whenever you guys do a shootout of wires, try to check out a Grover set. I’ve never heard a direct comparison between these and coiled wires other than within my own “experiments”.

I wish I would have seen this years ago; I experimented with a 42 strand on a snare I had, and it was decent, but I definitely ran into the problem of it being choked and wet. I never thought to do this, so I sold it... Oh well. Anyway! I heard you’re planning to do a snare wire shootout in the future, yes? May I suggest including the “blaster” wires (split snare wire) in that lineup? I have one on a 13x7, and I absolutely love it!

This was an awesome video... early on I lucked into an old gretsch snare with split 2x12 and it is very similar to what you describe on the 42... now I actually know why.

I don't know who this dude is, but we should be best friends. Joking aside, I found this video to be super helpful (already shared it with fellow drummer pals) and truly appreciate how articulate the message is. By comparison, there are other videos on KZfaq that are not as effective, especially from the perspective of playing the sounds BACK TO BACK (that's the key). Instant fan. Instant subscriber. Instant best friend. :)

I much prefer the sound of the 16’s to the 42’s compared at 11:12. The 42’s were too rattly, and sloppy-sounding.

've noticed that I can't tell the difference between a 42 strand and a 20 strand on the same drum. Ive recorded it played it back over and over. Tried strings and tried different heads and really can't tell the difference.

so, years ago the local drum guy (Shawn Lafrenz who now works at Pearl, look him up) at the local music shop turned me onto using patterson cable snares when he set up my 14 x 7 yamaha recording custom (oh, and a remo fiberskyn head). besides sounding amazing, i had less of a problem with sympathetic buzz. i have been trying to find and buy cable snares over the years but they are never on the shelf, you have to order them, patterson, black swamp, grover (which i've yet to try) .... you guys should do an episode on cable snares .....

I've had a Yamaha YD-series set and for the longest time I've used 42 strand wires on the snare of that set. It's quite a cheap set but I absolutely love the snare sound. With the 42 strad wires I can get wonderful pop/rock sounds as well as modern folk sounds. Often the 42's save me from using a snare bottom mic (which is nice when touring with a minimal set up).

When you want a snare to sound like a snare by itself you don’t need equalization or compression. It’s when you’re mixing with a dozen or more tracks and you need consistency and cut through. A whole drum set by itself with just four mics might need a little but as soon as you bring in singing and other instruments it will be a jumble without insert effects.
