I have always been a two ply batter head guy, but I mostly play without close mics and you just made me question my tom batter choice. I often hit the toms uncomfortably hard just to make them cut. I will definitely try some single ply heads and see how they feel. This is such practical, down to earth drumming wisdom. I keep learning from your channel every week.

hi cody.have played drums 49 years now.great exspearament!i tryed 2 ply resos 1 time decades ago.found they only worked in very resonant live rooms and unmiked.controled sound.for me useing a single ply reso i can make the drum sustain longer or shorter by tensioning the bottom up or down.thats the way i was taught.2 ply resos can sound great but mostly need to be miked to carry out to the crowd.even unmiked a single ply will carry more than a 2 ply reso.great job cody!all the best to you drum brother!

Thank you for this video! It's literally perfect timing. I was up til 2 a.m. trying to tune my 16x16 floor tom. I just so happened to have a Remo Emperor Clear on the reso and a Vintage Emperor on the batter. The batter side has a lot of attack with an extreme amount of low end. But I'm definitely convinced to try a single ply reso as well... just to experiment.

THIS is my all-time favorite drum trend, Two-ply Resos! As to which brand heads I use, I go with either the Remo clear pinstripes or the Evans 360 Hydraulics (their clear Red heads are my favorite). When tuned properly, the resulting sounds I get from this makes me goon through the roof I wish I could lock myself in a studio and record my kit all day and night! Your channel is Godhead! Thank you so much!!! :-D

Cool to see it being done on purpose. I've had 2-ply heads on the bottom of toms for years to save money ha. My 13" rack has had old snare heads on reso and batter cos I'm too tight to buy new heads for it. Currently has a used Evans Onyx on top and bottom - sounds huge! Even after the heads been used on my snare for a couple of months each.

I tried that some month ago, with ages old pinstripe batters and old G2 as resos (10'', 12'', 14''). I must say, I brought my pearl forum never as punchy and deep as with this. Sounded absolutely fantastic! I also used an old snare head as batter on the floortom for a while, which makes the drum realy dry and deep, which often time is exactly what you want, especially live.

Used this pairing in the studio on the weekend and it definitely brings the thunder under the mics. Band was live off the floor, drums were isolated in a booth. If you need a big tom sound under mics in a loud band this is your jam right here. The floor tom sound is incredible, going back to a single ply on the rack to compare, might just be a situational change for different sounds.

Great episode! Can't wait to try this. I've used black dots as reso for my toms, and though they're not a regular 2 ply, I use them with this type of sound in mind, and they do the trick quite nicely. Articulate, with a ton of low end and still manageable with close mics. Funny enough, I got the idea from Charlie Watts, and the first fill you did on the video is almost a Watts trade mark (¨Love is Strong¨, for example)

You guys are doing some great stuff!! This drum head/tuning topic is something that drummers are ALWAYS thinking about and testing. I have vintage drums-1962 Ludwig Downbeat, mahogany shells-that are shorter than what you have here. I've been searching for a sound that is low and fairly short without doing too much extra dampening. Here's what I found that works for my drums. HEADS: Batter - 2 ply coated heads (7.5 mil, 3mil), Reso - 1 ply coated (10mil). TUNING: low tension but with enough rebound to be playable. BATTER TO RESO HEAD RELATIONSHIP: Rack Toms, reso head approx. 1/2 step below the batter head. Floor Toms, reso head approx 1-step above the batter head. Basically, I'm trying to avoid the classic "dip tone" you get when the reso head is tuned 1 1/2 steps higher than the batter. I want a fairly straight tone. I'm guessing that the depth of the drums (rack vs. floors) is why the batter to reso head relationship is different. My drums are resonant but because the are tuned low, and both sides have coated heads, the overtones are lower and the decay gets absorbed by other sounds and instruments. Give it a try.

Great episode! I especially enjoy when you discover something you enjoy, even if your hunch was that you might not! 😉 I was first introduced to a kit with this configuration (single ply coated batters and 2 ply clear resos on toms/ Floor toms) on a kit provided by a band leader on a variety band gig where we played everything from Glen Miller to George Michael to Guns and Roses!! What I discovered was I could still get them in the med/ med low range I was used to, but at lower dynamics they were still sensitive and articulate whereas with the heads reversed (what I'm used to), the lower dynamics aren't as "true" sounding, and either are just weak, or produce strange harmonics and ill defined stick articulation (even with coated 2ply) compared to this combination. Keep 'em comin'!! 👊🏼🦁

I use G2 clears on the bottom along with UV2's on a set of drums with a rounded bearing edge. Works amazing in the studio..Theres absolutely no muffling needed under a mic. I also have the same set of Pearls Master customs in the videos...those are a standard 45 degree bearing edge drums. I use G1 coated reso head G2 coated batters in a studio setting if not G2 coated on reso. I have a hard time with the Pearls. I wish they had fine threaded lug screw option along with a double 45 bearing edge so the head would sit flatter and not so much in the radius of the drumhead. These videos are fantastic. Thanks so much for these.

Back in the mid-1980’s I was using a 6-piece Yamaha 9000 RC in the then new cherrywood finish (wish I still had it now) and used red-coloured Evans hydraulic batters and again red Evans rock 2-plys (no oil) as resonant heads on the 10, 12, 14 and 16” hanging toms. Closely miked it sounded fantastic, very deep and punchy, a warm resonance and each drum had a great response. You could play 32nd note fills and each beat would come through with clarity and definition.

Cory, typical great Video. I'm only a 69 YO, Recreational Drummer (if you can call it That !!), who plays drums to My Music for retirement fun. I really like the way you present the various ways to tune this Instrument. I started playing in 1966, with HS buddies, all Learning their instruments in a Garage Band for 3 years. Then in 1969, we went separate ways, and I abandoned playing UNTIL 2019. 50 Years later, my wife of 45 years overheard me mentioning that I may go to a local Music Studio to beat on the Drums for reminiscing Fun. She gifted me a Cheapo Kit _ Gammon - for Xmas 2018. I gave that Kit to my 4 year old Grandson a few months ago, and purchased a PDP Concept Maple 6 piece Kit - USED 3 months ago. I changed the Batter heads to Evans G2s , using the single ply Reso heads (the stock heads which are PDP made by Remo). Now seeing this, I am going to try 2 Play Clear Reso Heads ... Would the G2s Clear serve that purpose? THX for the Info.

@@richardhingle3634 Hey Richard, although I posted this a Year ago (My God, a year ago), I haven't tried this Reso head on my kit yet. Now, I'm using EC2s Batter heads on my 3 Rack Toms (8,10 & 12), and G2s coated on my 2 Floor Toms (14 & 16 inch). I am using Evans E-Rings on all but the 8" Tom. Drum Tuning is an acquired ART. In addition for the Maple Snare 14 X 5.5 with the PdP Concept Maple kit, I installed a HD dry batter head - cranked up high. I also have a DW Series Nickel over Brass 14 X 6.5 Snare also purchased USED. When that was delivered via Reverb form a previous owner - it came with a HD Dry head. It played very well out of the delivery box! It too ws Cranked up. But here's a "weird" thing. After I replaced the HD dry Head on the DW a few weeks ago, I could not attain that same sound. Last week, after tryin g to tweak that snare, I placed it atop of my 16" Floor Tom to get it out of the way. I played the Pdp Maple snare for this particular session (I play about 1 hour a day to My Music for Recreation in Retirement). During a Fill, I hit the DW snare - BINGO - That was Ludwig Supraphonic sound , the John Bonham sound I was looking to get! Take the Dwff the Tom and it was totally different! Same with the Pdp snare - it improved the sound. Forum Posters told me that I was actually Playing 2 Drums in this manner! Another poster jokingly said that I may have Invented a New Style Snare Stand!! I just ordered a UV 2 Batter head which I will try today (I hope). A UV 1 was returned - I didn't like it on the Maple Snare at all. The sound that Cody and many others have from their Snares have been elusive to me thus far. What I realized recently, watching some drum Tuning videos on another channel, was the vast effects of EQing and Miking of drums have on the sound you hear !! PS...after tweaking and re-installing the HD dry head , the reso head and the wires on the Maple Snare, I did achieve a better sound , BUT now I get lots of Snare Buzz :):)

As a rule of thumb not a two-ply reso kinda guy. Simply because of projection. After hearing your fine work I like the depth and warmth of a two ply reso head. Of corse the caveat is; all depends on the playing situation and if you have sound reinforcement to back it up for the gig your doing. You can't be setup for every scenario even if you are touring concert stadiums with good techs.and a series of head combos. You can create a defined sound that will work for most venues. Keep up the good work. Really like what you guys are doing.

Sounds almost identical to Neil Peart's method during the late 70's to the early 90's, except the top wasn't really a Hydraulic but rather an early 2-ply that's no longer in production called Looking Glass heads/Heavy Duty Rock which is pretty much the basis for G2's except the rings were sort of resin-like flesh to them and drumhead productions weren't technically that precise yet until recently with better technologies.

Just since you were curious about thicker single-ply heads, I tried a graduated set on my stave kit when I originally got it - G1/reso glass on 10", G12/reso glass on 12", and G14/G12 on 15". I recall the lower two working pretty ok but the gradation was a bit too severe to really work. Probably in a 5-tom scenario it would make sense. But, the G12 reso/G14 batter was super meaty if you're hitting hard. I think the two-ply heads might be a better solution for hard hitters though, since they're probably going to muffle the toms anyways.

Going to sound insane, but I am using Evans G2 tops at very low tuning and their Hydraulics for resos (which are 2-ply obviously). I beat the absolute crap out of the kit when I play, so I'm not too worried about projection or subtlety, but I like that they need no dampening and I don't need tone-rings to kill the excess energy creating ringing, which let's the batters me keep really loose and not kill the top head sound. It keeps the tom sound close to the tom as well, so they are not as much in overheads or other mics and only getting picked up with the clip mics. I searched around looking for anyone who has done this and didn't see anything, which leads me to believe this is stupid, but I like the results. I'm just putting it here because it was this video and the close-mic'ing for low end that gave me the idea.

I have Aquarian Super 2's on the bottom of my toms (with Emperors on top) and it helps get that juicy throaty deep end sound that I like. They're tuned within a quarter turn of just over wrinkle. I have a 10 12 14 kit in jazz sizes and they sound like power toms! Thanks for this video!

So I have been playing drums for 36 years and behind a shield for over 20. I currently have large Gretsch toms (13” / 16”). Due to the bounce off the shield, you are always fighting the slap back. In the last year, I have gone to 2 ply COaTED (5mil over 7mil) and 2 ply coated on top. GAME CHaNGER. Still even using sound rings to lower the tone and control decay but WOW I love me some two ply reso’s

This is the way to go - G2s / or Emperors on top and bottom - I've used this combo since 1986 in the studio on a set of 1964 Ludwigs. Ambassadors or G1 on resos just don't cut it IMHO. Good thunderous sound with beautiful pitch and tone by having G2 or Emperor on the upper and lower heads. The needs for dampening are minimal. The tones are nice and even without the excessive ring.

I'm definitely going to try this with my bass drum. I use a Ludwig Breakbeat kit with a 16x14 bass drum. I can get good sounds but none that I've been completely satisfied with. Also Bill Bruford used G2's for batter & resonant on his bass drum for some time with King Crimson when he used a mix of acoustic and electric drums.

If you use clear single ply rezo heads and clear 2ply batter heads you get a much warmer and open tone . The coated batter heads choke the drum a bit . with coated batter heads single play clear always work better. Great video by the way I really enjoy watching your video thank you

My original kit came with silver dot heads on the resos! For years, sound guys would complain that they couldn't get a decent sound out of my toms, but nobody knew that was the reason. Then came the day I busted a reso and had to replace it with something else. BOOM! Drums jumps about double in volume. Keep them rezzies LIGHT!

I'd be curious to hear your thoughts about some 2-ply reso heads. I've experimented with black dot & silver dot heads as resos and was never really a fan of how they behaved on the drums I tried them with but I definitely dig the 2-ply reso approach, especially for larger drums. -Ben

@@SoundsLikeADrum These days, I'm playing a bit lighter (heh). But I use the classic Pinstripes as batter heads and Evans EC Resos on the bottoms. It's worth noting that these are big, old, obnoxious 90's drums: 12x12, 13x13 and 16x16, so resonance and overtones are always an issue. The ECs were a revelation, cutting just enough out of the high end to bring out the beefy in the rack toms while letting me tune slightly higher on the batter for more stick definition. I've considered putting the dot back on the floor tom because it's just too damned ringy and I don't want to use moon gels or other things that are going to prevent a "full" ringing of the drums. Honestly, that's one of many reasons why I subscribe to your channel: give me ideas before I start plunking down money.

my best sounding toms are some off brand shells with coated pinstripes on one side and clear pinstripes on the other. I switch between the two sides as batter/reso. the coated as batter and clear as reso is my go to though. very guttural, great for heavy rock.

Around the Moving Pictures era, I'm pretty sure he was using Evans looking glass on top (which I understand are similar to a G2 but with some type of flexible collar?) And blue hydraulics on the bottom. I'm fairly certain that he would tune the top and bottom heads to the same pitch. I imagine this would make the heads resonate together for a brief moment, creating a beautiful note, and then the increased mass/ oil of the head would shorten the sustain, giving a bit more of an articulate sound. I want to try this for myself to find out.

I actually learned this by mistake, I was in a session where I had just snares and one rack with a coated 2 ply over a coated single about a 3rd lower; I had set it down upside down in the stand, hit it once, went wow, and left it that way for 3 charts. Really nice shortcut for colour options since I changed nothing except flipping it over.

i'm changing out my toms from 8x7, 10x8 and 12 x 9 to 8x8, 10x9 and 12x10 so naturally i was thinking about trying out something different. i currently use ec2 360 evans on the batter and remo clear ambassador for resos. I like the idea of trying out a 10mm reso head rather than the 7.5 i use now. I'm not sure that i can get a better tone and sound than i get now, seriously, i have to tone and sound i always hear in my head as THE sound so I'm happy in that. I am increasing 1 inch depth because i like that combination just slightly more than my current set up. with a thicker reso, I might get slightly more tone in my toms without getting overtones.

I've used 2 ply on the bottom of mine for years and it shocked me that so many drummers I know and have talked to that have never tried it. I always felt it cut out some of the higher overtones that single ply resonant heads had, especially on floor toms. Also, when the batter head would wear out I could just rotate the reso to the batter side and a spare single ply I"d have laying around to the bottom for a temporary, quick fix.
