I’ve been using the magic eraser on my heads for a few years. I just don’t like the look of dirty heads. Coarse coated heads can really eat up the magic erasers, though. Wet wipes also work well.

One that I've used for several years is using mini binder clips to keep dampening materials on the heads. I use microfiber cloths to dampen my heads, and then I drape a small portion over the rim and attach it to the hoop with a mini binder clip. Small, cheap, effective, no sticky residue, no noticeable effect on the sound either. Great video!

Man! This was awesome! Came for Bass drum clampy problem... stayed for the entire thing. Fun fact: a hose clamp would be called a "Schelle" in German, but if walked into a hardware store and asked for a 'schelle'... dude that works there could possibly slap you too, because a "Schelle" also means a slap, so be on your guard. Greets from Germany!

I use O-rings on back end of my sticks to secure cymbal felts to create makeshift mallets. It works very well for cymbals and we all know how expensive mallets can be.. especially if you're in a pinch in the studio! The thicker the cymbal felt the better, make sure to get O-rings that will accommodate your stick size. Rubber O-rings work best. Rubber bands will work if you dont have access to O-rings, but they are super cheap at hardware stores. I get a lot of things for my drums at harbor freight. Weather it be padding or wheels for cases or O-rings, shrink wrap and liquid tape for "dip grip" drumsticks. And its cheap!

Before I got specific memory locks for my current hardware, I had hose clamps on all of my old stands that didn't have that option. I still use them on floor tom legs and other things that don't have memory lock options, and they work beautifully. Once I get them set where I want them, I'll clamp them down with a socket wrench and trim off all the excess "ribbon" that I don't need.

I have had flooding issues in my basement, where my kit is, so I built a 12x8 riser to avoid flood damage. It has saved me twice. Because I dont gig with my home kit, it makes it so I can literally screw my cymbal stands that like to wander right to the riser... About $100 in material and an hour or two of my time has saved my kit many times over

While I try to stay well stocked on plastic cymbal sleeves (and felts) these days, in the past I've used the cardboard tubes inside of dog poop bag rolls and a washer base to protect my cymbals when the proper sleeves went missing/got yanked. The tubes just happen to be the right diameter!

I’ve cut and used the body of a plastic ink pen in a pinch. Think it was one of the cheap Bic’s? I’ve also found that vinyl tubing from a hardware store works great. You can buy it by the foot for practically nothing. I usually keep a foot or so in my cymbal bag to cut to length as needed for house kits.

Been using hose clamps for years, but until you mentioned it, I never thought about the fact that they are not adjustable with a drum key. Business proposition, drum key adjustable hose clamps, uh I mean universal memory locks... 50/50, you and me. :) once again, thanks for the video. I find myself looking forward to them more and more each week.

I've been experimenting with bags of rice to muffle my bass drum. I haven't gone through all the variations like 10-15 lb bag inside a pillowcase. The current variation I'm trying is filling an athletic sock with rice and tying it off. The end result being a rice noodle... We'll see how this goes.

I use vinyl tubing for cymbal sleeves on my older stands/holders. Some of the modern plastic sleeves are too thick to accommodate the smaller mounting hole of vintage cymbals (I had issues with Gibraltar and Tama), plus vinyl is softer, so it has more give, which is helpful when the vintage cymbal barely fits on a stand. And of course, anyone interested in Big Fat Snare Drum can make their own wih an old drum head, if aesthetics aren't an issue. I'll have to check out the 3M pads, although unfortunately my hoop is already scratched up. The snare basket hack looks really cool too. I'm currently using Pearl's hoop protector and snare basket adapters.

I've got a weird one. I use Honda P/N 74172-TR0-A00 (used as intercooler and radiator mount bushings) as floor tom isolation feet. I work in a Honda parts department. On a slow day I was looking into tom isolation feet (like a good employee) until I realized that i'd come across really soft bushings at work that could probably do the job. I looked around the department until I came across these bushings, brought them to my kit, and the experiment was a success. They cost marginally less than actual isolation feet, depending on where you get them, they fit pretty snugly around the tom legs if you take the original hard rubber feet off. They're also extremely soft so they're good at absorbing the impact, isolating the tom and improving sustain.

have been using magic eraser for a while .. I'd only say, check each head carefully .. I've used it on several Premier Everplay heads from a similar era (70s) nominally the same head, coating looks identical. On some you can work it quite hard and get the head very clean without harming the coating, on others the coating starts to scuff quite quickly .. I would hope modern heads are more consistent

Awesome tips guys! Thanks so much for the info. My two cents: I've had excellent results taping an eraser to a cymbal to try and tame the high frequencies...the material itself is pretty flexible and I find it does a great job without taking too much away from the character of the cymbal. Plus, you can cut it down to any size you want.

Heres a recording tip: If you have a cymbal that is a little too zingy, you can calm down that piercing high end by gently rubbing Brasso onto the underside of the cymbal, and not rubbing it off. It dries as a green paste and does a perfet job of making your cymbal sound a bit darker without changing the character of the cymbal.

Not really a "Hack" but, I'd recommend getting a #12-24 threading die (Standard tension rod size-threading --careful if you have 6M pearl rods or those high thread count PDP rods) for when you feel like a tension rod is a little rough or has some visible rust. Running it through the threading die can help clean up some dings in the threading.

I put some tiny hose clamps on the floor tom legs from my '60s Club Date kit which has the push button brackets on them which don't stay in place at all. Great solution for a really common issue. I had original wanted to replace the mounting brackets, but the hole spacing was wider than anything I could find. Plus, this solution cost a few cents as opposed to $100 trying to replace 3 leg brackets.

I've been using hose clamps as memory locks for years. The only caveat is that there are sometimes sharp edges on the band that protrudes past the wormscrew. I wear work gloves when setting up and tearing down so this isn't a problem for me. I started wearing gloves because I got tired of injuring my hands while trying to loosen really tight wing bolts and other little mishaps that can happen when putting things together or taking them apart. Pinching a finger between two parts sliding together is always annoying. I carry two sockets from a socket wrench set, with a screwdriver type handle for tightening and loosening the hose clamps. It works much better than a flat head screwdriver because there's no risk of slipping out of the slot, and having the blade cut into a finger. Did I mention that I'm a bit of a klutz when working on my hardware, especially in a dimly lit room? Thanks for the great info you guys put out.

Not to contradict David but I would not recommend this. The paper used for this is not enough to protect the hoop from being marred by a pedal even when doubled up. I tried this once, with a clear G1, just out of curiosity. It sounded even worse than I expected it to. A 2-ply head would be terrible. You lose a lot of snap and high-end, and you don’t get any appreciable snare response. You need a really thin head down there, for your snare to sound like a snare.
