In this video I debated the need wether or not to still be soldering our jacks and plugs. I also went over the type of plugs I use in my own setup as well as the Tester I use to test all my cables.This video will be the first of my Sound System 101 Series.
below is a link to some of the items used in this video...

I think some of you are missing the point. I’m not saying soldering is bad I’m just showing another way to get the job done that is much easier and foolproof. I have no problem soldering, it’s just not necessary anymore. My opinion.

I do the same with my rack. Partly because I wasn’t confident in my soldering but mainly because it’s easier to problem solve if you’ve got spare cables to swap in if you happen to have a cable fail. And no need to bust out the soldering iron if soldering points fail mid session

Good show sir I did a show on my FB channel a few years back and I love the ease of putting my connections in a panel and be done with it. I’m glad I came across your channel I will be watching and learning as well thanks for sharing

Every connection can be a failure point. With solder you must secure the cable and have strain relief. Having a barrel connection adds more weight, more failure points and cost. There’s no rules, but just a thought

Good tips bro👍🏼✅️🔊 funny thing only us small sounds care about looking neat those big well known sounds racks look horrible there only concern is sounding good and staying relevant. Respect 👍🏼

Yes my brother great video . I am trying to move away from soldering also. But there are cases when I do have to make a solder . I build lot of XLR cables for my mike system at church. When I do build them I used the plastic epoxy to help hold the joints . They are working fine for about 4 years now . But the raw wire to speaker boxes and wire all over the amp rack is a no no in this primitive time .

i use to build my XLR cables as well, but i think this works out better for me. yes its more expensive but less hassle in the long run.

Nice Channel. As an ex sound man whose been soldering for decades, it ain't that hard Bro. If you solder those leads correctly, they will never come off. If they are coming off, or falling off, then you are doing something very wrong. Soldering is a good skill to have in your locker even if you want to go your connector-to-connector route. The price they charge for those connectors, you'll save yourself a ton of ££'s or $$s by learning how to solder like a Pro… then that's more cash available to buy music or other necessary gear… Trust me!… Nice info. though. Keep on keeping on.

1: Use solder with flux. 2: Tin both surfaces to be connected with a layer of solder. 3: Connect the two parts to be soldered then heat them up till the solder melt & flow then remove the soldering iron. 4: Do not use cheap wire which will oxidize over time then break connection. 🧐 I have made guitar & studio cables over 30 years ago which I still use today. Soldering will save you a ton of money.

I thought I was gonna see a video of how to make cables without soldering. For me there is no cost effective way of getting around soldering and am very good at it so I never end up with cold solder joints.
@MightyAction
@MightyAction 5 ай бұрын
yes it has a lower up front cost when you solder. Making your own jacks, cables etc.. with bulk mic cable and jacks. But regardless of my solder skills, i still think it works out better for me this way. I don't have to worry about having to solder a jack in the middle of a event etc.. If a jack ever fails just bypass it in the matter of a second. Cold solder joints isn't the only thing one would worry about. There is lots of other things that can cause a wire to brake off the jack at the point of soldered.

I would like to have those (solder-) RCA connectors if you don't want them bruh. I have to say, if your solder breaks that easily, you didnt flow it properly or soldered on a dirty surface. If it doesn't flow, do it again. And if it breaks it's usually not the soldering but not enough clamping of the cable. If it wiggles , you're screwed sooner or later.

ACTION SOLDERING IS WAY MORE BETTER BECAUSE THE AVERAGE SOUNDMAN HAS TO PUT INTO CONSIDERATION COST , AVAILABILTY AND TIME. YOU DONT SOLDER BECAUSE YUH NUH GOOD AT IT . TWO OF THOSE CRAPPY CHINESE CAN BUY ONE COIL OF SOLDER , A SOLDERING IRON AND A PAIR OF STRIPPERS.
@MightyAction
@MightyAction 5 ай бұрын
for me its the opposite, it saves me time and money in the long run to not solder. trouble shooting is faster, the jacks can be bypassed if they go bad, so no need to be behind the sound in the middle of a event trying to re-solder a wire. plus it doesn't matter how good you are, solder probably have a life span on it. i just prefer to get these jacks to do the work easier.
