that's not the total population for the area of the Louisiana purchase. that's just the state of Louisiana.

Count the populations of all the other states in the Louisiana Purchase. The 4 million only counts the population in Louisiana state! The Louisiana Purchase covered many territories and states. Which at the time was about 60K inhabitants over the whole territory. Now the territory population is way above 4 million in just Louisiana state.

And they probably didn't count the natives that were living out on the plains at that time. So way more than 60k.

And with it, we also got control of one of the biggest areas of farmland in the world, which made us more food secure.

At present, ~72 million people live in the 820,000 sq mile (2,145,000 sq kilometer) area encompassed by the 1803 Louisana Purchase, which cost the USA about ~$340,000,000 in today's money.

$340,000,000 is a pretty great deal for that land.

Great video. Jefferson was a genius. In more ways than one. It was shortly after the Louisiana Purchase that he sent Lewis and Clark to explore and map the new territory. They actually set out in 1804, and reached the Pacific in 1805. So you see from the map, they didn't just wander all over the newly acquired territory, they forged ahead through the Rocky Mountains all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Jefferson wanted to get started establishing a presence in the Purchase, and beyond, before other European powers (French, British, and Spanish, primarily) could lay claim to parts of what was west of the Purchase. Plus, Lewis and Clark would be able to establish a passable route to the Pacific. Look up the Lewis and Clark Expedition, otherwise known as the Corps of Discovery Expedition. Thanks, and God bless you and yours!

Unless you can read French, it'll be hard to read the original documents - which include a "Treaty" and a "Convention." (I have a translated version, but forget where I found it.) As others have mentioned, the land included all or parts of about 16 states, plus a portion of the present state of Louisiana. Also, it predates the boundary between the US and present-day Canada, so the southern parts of two Canadian Provinces were also included.

At the time, it was the largest single transaction in history. Back in 1803 a dollar was directly convertible to 1.6 grams of 22 karat gold. That's 26.2 tons of gold which today would be worth about 1.4 billion dollars. At the time this was a truly staggering sum and in the North most people were against the purchase and rightfully concerned about the cost and the prospect of adding new slave states to the union. In 1800, there were 17 states 8 of which had abolished slavery and adding new slave states through the Louisiana purchase threatened to derail the abolishonist movement.

to calculate the total population involved in the 60,000, you need to take the population of all the other states involved in the Louisiana Purchase (all the way from new orleans to canada.

the Louisiana purchase created America's bread bowl. the area purchased contributes enormously to America's agricultural output.

The Alaska purchase was a large part of our history as well. At first it was considered to be mostly worthless until gold was found, as well as great fishing industry and a large amount of minerals. It was purchased for a very small amount considering the great amount of research of mammals and wilderness.

Since you are interested in the Louisiana Purchase, the next step is the Lewis & Clark Expedition…That was the initial exploration of the “purchase”. There are many videos and publications about it…fascinating!!!

In 1803 a dollar was an ounce of silver. So with the current spot of silver at $22.74, it would be $341,100,000 today. A fraction of the cost of SoFi stadium, for perspective.

That's the population just in Louisiana. You would have to look up the population of the whole louisiana purchase was divided. Between states

You could go to Louisiana anytime you wanted to if you lived in Texas. I’m pretty sure you are not going to want to go home once you get over here. Not even kidding. I’m sure that you will love it here.

In 1867 we bought Alaska from Russia for I think it was 7 million or 7.5 million either way it's half the price for this Louisiana purchase and today Alaska is priceless if I had to put a price on all the resources and materials it has to offer it would be in the trillions of dollars worth of resources and we bought it for hardly nothing

That land did not belong to Spain; France or the United States. As an Native American, the land was stolen from us, the true caretakers of the land. Native Americans did not believe in the concept of owning land but believed more in conservation of the land. Native Americans welcomed the English; fed them and taught them how to surive the harsh winters. But later some took avantage and killed many Indians because they wanted to own the land. An interesting way to show gratitude to a people for saving your lives. This continued for years. This action mingled with disease wiped out the Native American population. The one thing in common is that Spain, France, England and US wanted the Indians off the land and claim it as their own. Of course there is much more to say but if you dig a little further, you will get a better idea of what else really happened to this land occupied by Native Americans long before the arrival of Europians.

Actually, Napoleon being short was more like a wives tale. He was actually fairly average height for his time.
