South Bend 10L Cross Slide Screw and Handle Repair

In this video I show the steps that I used to repair a broken cross feed screw for my south bend heavy 10. This repair kind of needs a lathe to do quite a bit of the repairs, but if you have ether the cross slide or the compound still functioning, you can make it work.

@@precisionmachineshed I'm still kind of taken a back by that one you had scraped out tho......... that was really something when you got that back. Even with the scrape......... this is nicer? I know it's got the spindle. I have a threaded spindle. My ways are really in GREAT condition on mine. Someone painted it tho ...... without disassembly....... Carolina Blue LOL. Once I find the time and motivation I will strip this puppy down and repaint it a traditional color. There's a guy on youtube who did his in this machinery grey with a green tint to it that just looks amazing. Even this blue wouldn't be bad if they didn't just slop paint all over everything. Not sure they even masked any. Maybe I should do a video on it. I love these Heavy 10 4 foot with the pipe frame stand lathes. Just chatting about it makes me want to go down and start tearing it apart. The big issue is space tho. Anyhow nice repair!

How do test the 3 phase motor? I can’t figure out if the motor is broken or the 3 phase generator is broken or the wiring is wrong. It has no torque and sometime doesn’t even get up to speed when started

Great job! And what fun would it be without Sketchy Setup!! Also, what do the G-D shipping companies have against lathes? It seems they go out of their way to fold, spindle and mutilate them.

Hi. I have the same lathe. I’m trying to dismantle the cross slide to inspect and clean. I have removed the handle and dial, but I can’t unscrew the last part. The part with the circular piece that goes against the dial and the shaft that goes into the slide. I don’t know what you call it, but it’s in your video. There’s a 1” nut that looks like it just unscrews, but mine won’t budge. Tried torch and belt wrench. No good. Any ideas? Thanks, Paul

If yours has a taper attachment it needs to come out with the taper attachment usually and those are two pieces. The non-taper model is a one piece and you should be able to unscrew the micrometer dial with a wrench on the flats and the whole thing should come out.
