South Bend Heavy 10, In the Beginning....it was Broken!

Күн бұрынGetting ready to spruce up the old girl in the corner! This South Bend Heavy 10 has seen better days. I'm here to put it back together and get it functioning the way it was 40 years ago. This lathe was picked up several months ago and I'm now getting around to it. I will be going over several of the issues and how I will go about fixing them. Broken screws, broken handwheels, and wiring up the motor are at the top of the list. With a little TLC, this old lathe should be turning chips in no time flat!

Nice find. I restored this exact same lathe last year. Came out of Detroit. The only thing I had to replace was the cross feed screw which was worn pretty bad. Scored a NOS one from Southbend Ted. Good luck buddy I love mine.

Thanks, I'll replace those eventually, but after I get it running. Since I sold my restored 51' 10L a few years back, I've been looking for a replacement. They are hard to find in decent condition. This is probably the 5th one I've bought since and each of those were too worn out for my liking. I think I'll be happy with this one.

I have been unfortunate enough to know how the handles get broke in half like the one. Of you don't realize the pin is tapered and you try and knock it out in the wrong direction that is what happens. Learned my lesson for sure. I was lucky enough to find one for mine it was the half nut lever I broke. The tapered pin hole is bores for that specific handle so I had to replace the whole workings with it.

Looks like a solid, late-model lathe, that was owned by an angry gorilla! Seriously, that's a nice machine - one of these days, I'll get around to my fixing my old 9B. Have a merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

I’m going to look at one on Tuesday for $850. Looks dirty but says it runs good. Hopefully in decent shape.

@@precisionmachineshed Thanks. Delayed until Thursday. It’s not a tool room lathe so not flame hardened. Looks like it’s all there. Other than missing pieces, bed wear, gears, and backlash any other big things to look out for? Unfortunately it’s not under power so I can’t run it.

Instead of brazing that handle, why don't you use JB Weld?

I have a question for you. There's a lathe just like this at the machine shop at my college. Do you know how to fix play in the cross feed adjustment. The knob turns half to three quarters of a revolution before the cross feed moves. Thanks.

Most times it a worn screw and nut.
