This is awesome. I grew up in Racine as did my parents who used to go to these games as kids. We have an autographed ball and several game programs that my mom kept from back in the day. Very cool to see actual footage.

This is awesome to see. These ladies could really play and I would have loved to see this live! I never knew about this league until watching "A League of Their Own" and I've been interested ever since

My dad’s 2nd cousin played for the Blue Sox. Her name was Sue Kidd. I lived and breathed baseball growing up. I’d have given anything for that opportunity. Had to settle for slow pitch softball which I was grateful for. I was 10 when we got girls’ softball going thanks to Title IX.

@@kwoerd Oh, the kid in me sure loves that idea! At my age now, though, I’d have to settle for coaching. Gosh, I miss playing…

1:07 "per the usual pregame, the players took to the field in star-spangled formation: a V for victory during the national anthem." "Night games were normal for the league ..... , with temporary lights set up behind the diamond, the All-American Girls Softball League played the very first night game (and the second) in Wrigley Field on July 1, 1943." - Anika Orrock, 'Incredible Women of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.' 📖

My mother was picked to play for the Racine Belles. However they found out she was underage and was released/ My dad said my mom was the woman's version of Micky Mantle. Too bad she did not try to make the team when she was old enough.

Yeah. That was a good movie. The only things wrong with the movie is that these women played underhand fast pitch softball. Not Baseball. Also the bases were 75 feet away not 90.

We need to go back to having people like this! This was the last great generation

Looks like a very interesting form of baseball. More strategy and less "homerun video baseball". Looks like it was easy to steal bases though. Learned this from Wikipedia: "In the first season, the league played a game that was a hybrid of baseball and softball. The ball was 12 inches in circumference, the size of a regulation softball (regulation baseballs are 9 to 91⁄4 inches). The pitcher's mound was only forty feet from home plate, closer even than in regulation softball and much closer than the baseball distance of 60 feet, 6 inches. Pitchers threw underhand windmill, like in softball, and the distance between bases was 65 feet, five feet longer than in softball, but 25 feet shorter than in baseball. Major similarities between the AAGPBL and baseball included nine player teams and the use of a pitcher's mound (softball pitchers throw from flat ground). By 1948, the ball had shrunk to 103⁄8 inches, overhand pitching was allowed, and the mound was moved back to 50 feet. Over the history of the league, the rules continued to gradually approach those of baseball. By the final season in 1954, the ball was regulation baseball size, the mound was moved back to 60 feet, and the basepaths were extended to 85 feet (still five feet shorter than in regulation baseball)"

Is this Softball? They’re pitching underhand and the ball looks pretty big
@farpointgamingdirect Жыл бұрын
Overhand pitching wasn't allowed until 1948 if I remember correctly.

Interesting.. that was my first thought too. They were playing softball. You can also see that the distances between bases look shorter and more like softball distances. That ball does look more like a softball size than baseball.

Aha, I found this KZfaq video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pql1ZtuCkrKXpWg.html that explained that in 1943 it actually started out as all-american women's professional softball league and later changed to baseball around 44-45 as seen in other videos. In other videos from 1945 they are pitching overhand/sidearm, but not underhand.. and they are throwing baseballs, not softballs.

so it was like baseball, but played in a peewee field and badly. movies and shows are liars. they dont even pitch overhand. cool though, they got to enjoy themselves and played the game they loved during otherwise terrible times.

I don't think it's totally fair to make that much judgement off of some grainy footage from their opening season. The game started out as a sort of amalgamation of softball and baseball. Things like the pitcher's mound and base distances were shorter than in baseball but longer than in softball. The ball was softball sized, but they had a baseball-style mound. As the league progressed, the rules gradually got more baseball-like. By the 50s, the ball was baseball sized, they could pitch overhand, and they were playing on pretty much a baseball regulation field (60ft mound distance and 85ft base distance). And they were doing it all in dresses! I agree with you they probably weren't stepping up to Joe DiMaggio, but most of these women were coming from amateur softball backgrounds. This was the first, and pretty much only, time women even had a chance to play professionally. Regulation details aside, I definitely agree with you that it's great that they got the opportunity to step to the plate during an otherwise difficult time.

There's other videos of them playing on bigger fields pitching overhand. You try sliding in a skirt.

Some were and still are! How cool of you to celebrate that fact! Fortunately, they can now be open about that if they so choose. At the time, they would have been kicked out of the league.
