The last remaining streetcar route in South Bend, Indiana was converted to bus nearly 80 years ago, but few are aware that an obscure rural streetcar line has been clattering through the outskirts of South Bend since 1987. Today, the privately owned SBER is one of only two electric railways carrying passengers in the State of Indiana, the other one being, of course, the South Shore Line.
Bob Olson’s 18-inch gauge trolley line is ¼ mile long and its ‘substation’ is comprised of onboard 12 volt automotive batteries. He built nearly everything from scratch using salvaged materials and surplus mechanical and electrical parts. Rolling stock was inspired by NYC’s Third Avenue Railway. This video traces the history of the line, from construction of the first single-truck open car to present-day operations. Please forgive the rough spots; the early videos are copied from old camcorder tapes.

This is what we do in Indiana~ We get bored, overthink things, and then build it! That's how we got the Indy 500/Gasoline Alley, Borg-Warner, Allison, Prest-o-lite, Elwood Haynes' numerous ventures, Ball Jars, Brown County... and Bob Olson's wonderful creations~

My late father rode the street car to see burial of knute rockne in 1931. He had to transfer in downtown so. bend. The 2nd street car took him to highland cemetery. He lived on w. washington st. Street car tracks ran in front of apartment.

I’d like to do the same thing for the Netherlands, connecting the front garden with the back garden, with a total track distance of about 69 meters.

Always reminds me of the film High Society when Samantha Lord (Grace Kelly) referred to Mike Connors (Frank Sinatra) as "The gentleman from South Bend." :)

Great video. I was trying to find the point where its been decided to switch from overhead catenary power to onboard 12v battery power? Around the 9:35 I think it's still on overhead, but then when loading onto the old truck I see a pile of batteries removed? Cheers =)
