It was a crime Mayor Daily putting the North Shore Line out of business because of his actions.Dam Henry Ford and the Model T killing mass transit in this country.😢😢
@WesternOhioInterurbanHistory
@WesternOhioInterurbanHistory Ай бұрын
Henry Ford's goal with the Model T was not to replace public transit. The Model T was meant to allow people who weren't near transit to be able to go places. There were many, many areas of the US, even during the heyday of interurban transit where horses were the only real way to get away from home. For example, if you live in a farmhouse miles away from town, that Model T was the only way to get into town. Cars didn't kill public transit. Bad policy did.

Nice video, well filmed. I saw this layout in action today, and was much impressed with the quality and functionality of the modules, and the skill of the builder and wire assemblers. I'm glad that this layout continues to be shown, as it is unique yet very reflective of the nation's past public transit. Thanks for introducing me to your traction group!

Im retired now, but as a young boy my grandmother took me, my 2 sisters and my mom to marshal fields after thanksgiving for shopping and dinner in the big dining room with the humongous tree with uncle mistletoe on top. to a child it was something I'll never forget.

How many hundreds and hundreds of hours did it take to put all those decorations up?! and how many to take down?!
@Electropickle
@Electropickle 5 ай бұрын
Sallie Posniak, who was in charge of designing the Holiday decorations for most of her 38 years at Field's, replied, "What a difficult question to answer. There was the Great Tree, but there were also hundreds of other trees, The Main Aisle, Candy Cane Lane, and Cozy Cloud Cottage-the small decor throughout the store. Removing was faster than installing. Only Homer Sharp [Design Division manager] could answer that question."

Wasn't the Electroliner's bell (or gong if you prefer) air operated originally?
@albertcarello619
@albertcarello619 Ай бұрын
@johnrich2102: I think it was. It sounded similar to what you hear the bells on crossing gates only louder. Actually there's 2 floor pedals for the gong on the Electroliner one for just the single bell sound and the other for the air or what I call the Alarm-gong sounding what I just described before. You would hear the gongs when running in Milwaukee's City Streets and when entering and leaving the Main Milwaukee Terminal since it encountered street running to do so.

All of the classy department stores had restaurants. Abraham & Strauss, Hahne's, Bamberger's, Hess's, Marshall Field's, etc. Beautiful little cafes, with linen table cloths and crystal chandeliers. Going to one of these stores meant getting dressed up, wearing your best hat and gloves. Such a shame it's all gone.

Great video. I was trying to find the point where its been decided to switch from overhead catenary power to onboard 12v battery power? Around the 9:35 I think it's still on overhead, but then when loading onto the old truck I see a pile of batteries removed? Cheers =)

Thank you for this. I was born in the City of Chicago in 1951 and this was my absolute favorite place to shop all year long not just at the splendid Christmas Time. Moved to the San Francisco area in 1987 and was so disappointed in Macys. It was and still is absolutely soulless. When I heard that Macys was taking taking over Fields in Chicago I knew it was the beginning of the end. I simply had no idea how destructive Macys would be. Upon subsequent visits to Chicago after 2005 I noticed that the State St. store had begun to be desconstructed. Now all I have are the memories and a few lovely things like this video.

Where do I begin? Thank you for this amazing video! How or where you got the footage is a minor miracle! I worked in retail for many happy years, I had such fond memories of the big stores and their Christmas windows, the wonderful things that were sold there and the fantastic restaurants, the customer service and how everything was so much nicer and sweeter. Heart breaking what has been done to such a beautiful business that was incredibly profitable not just in money but in the good feelings that were created long ago by the talented artists/employees that spent long hours creating the “magic”. If I could turn back time or sign a petition anything for just one more Christmas like that 🎄🥂🍾🛷⛸️🎠🧸❣️

I grew up in Racine and one house was about a block away from the North Shore Line ... really liked watching the trains go by, and of course, going to Milwaukee and Chicago on one. Thanks for posting!! [Greetings from Tucson where we do have 8 Amtrak trains/week.]

My compliments to IRM! 801-802 looks fantastic and everyone who has been involved in the restoration of this train has justified reasons to be proud. Having been involved with the troubleshooting, repair parts sourcing, and repair work to make sister train 803-804 operable (in a very limited fashion) a decade ago, I can really appreciate how much work it must have taken for IRM’s team to get this far. Well done!

The SOUTH SHORE LINE didn't have the traffic between South Bend and Chicago like the North Shore Line did between Milwaukee and Chicago. That's why they never had any Electroliner Trainsets.

The electroliner was basically bankrupted because of Mayor Daley's refusal to let it coming to Chicago proper people had to get off and get on a bus because of that bastard not watching Republicans you to his Democratic. Of course this was the age before liberalism and worshipping the residence of the ghetto which way is it nice neighborhood when certain other people used to live there but not anymore but no one talks about that Tuesday o-east for Bolton

I grew up in Brooklyn during the '40s and have memories of riding the els and trolleys that crossed the city at that time. My father rode the Ocean Av line into downtown Brooklyn (yes, Brooklyn had a vibrant downtown), that line used PCC cars unlike the Flatbush Av line that used older cars, the line on Cortelyou Av used trolleybuses. I remember the steetcars in Manhattan, they use an underground system much like Washington DC. I have ridden the tram system in many European cities and note that the folks in East Berlin voted to keep their trams and not have a subway like West Berlin. During the late '40s my father took me for an extended ride on the 3rd Av el before they took it down, wood cars with open vestibules. My father had grown up in Ridgewood NJ and often talked about riding the Public Service interurbans there, seems like NJ is slowly trying to build this system back. I was ported in Boston during my service years and rode the lines in that city, trolleys were a fun way of getting around but they don't mix well with auto traffic, was much of that during the 40s due to fuel rationing due to WW2. Thanks for keeping these memories alive.

I watched a Betty Boop cartoon from the 1930s it was called too much noise. She lived in an apartment right by the Third Avenue L in New York. The artwork was fantastic. The elevated structure is very complicated but it was drawn accurately. They also accurately Through the Wood cars with the lamps on the roof like like the kind that used to run on 3rd Avenue elevated train. When I lived in New York if the train did not go there it was not worth going. How stupid they were to scrap all of the elevated lines as well as the streetcars. In my neighborhood where the asphalt had worn away you can see the original cobblestones with the streetcar tracks still there. One time when I was a little kid I took the elevated train to trainworld in Brooklyn and talked trains with Frank Sinatra who was a toy train buff. He may have been a movie star but to me he was just another trainguy of course I was just a young boy and I did not know he was a famous person. From the second story of our home you can see the elevated trains coming and going. New York was still nice in the old days until it died
