Contrasting 1990's and 2010/2011 views of trains at / passing South Kenton station which is at the London end of the WCML (West Coast Main Line).
From 1990 we see BR Class 313 and 321 trains in Network SouthEast livery plus London Transport Bakerloo Line 1972 Mk2 stock trains in their original unpainted aluminium with red doors livery. Plus an InterCity train in Swallow livery. The 1990's footage was taken in the evening and extends into twilight, when we see 3 and 6 carriage Class 313 trains.
From 2010/2011 we see London Overground Class 378 trains, London Midland Class 350 trains, Virgin Pendolino Class 390 trains, London Underground Bakerloo Line 1972 Mk2 stock trains in corporate livery plus a few freight trains.
Telephoto views also show trains at the nearby North Wembley station.

So both the Class 378s and 1972 stocks had to share together.On the Watford DC /Bakerloo Line

@jonniefc Thats because of the way BR resignalled the line, quite literally halving the train capacity compared to the LMS signalling system of the 1930's.

I remember travelling on this rail line daily on my way to work back in the last 1950's from Headstone lane station to Wembley central mainly by green British Rail trains non corrie doors types the stock was mostly pre WW2 stock then used get a bus round to Peirvale to work at a place called "Sewing Silks" so time would use a cycle & ride to Harrow Weald up over Harrow on the Hill to save the fares !!

@mcmotor101 The DC electrification of the Watford Line dates back to the LNWR and the WW1 era. In those days it also used a 4 rail system, which BR converted to 3rd rail in 1970.

3:01 why did the 313 have 6 carriages? I'm assuming just because of demand
@CitytransportInfoplus

I feel sure that it was because of a hoped-for influx of passengers during roadworks on the M1 motorway

@bronzeonion hmm, unless there is a very special reason I think that this would be unlikely. However as I understand it the NLL platforms at Stratford can accept trains of up to 6 carriages in length, and plans for lengthening these trains by adding extra carriages are already being discussed. The ELL may also have its trains lengthened, although at a few stations selective door opening will have to be used as an alternative to platform lengthening.

@antjeisback I assume that the power supply for the 3rd rail section south of Drayton Park was installed with enough capacity for 6 car trains when the BR trains replaced the Underground trains. Of course north of Drayton Park the overhead wire power supply was designed for more than just these trains. The Euston - Watford DC service was and still is a very different route.

The 1972 mk2 had the doors painted red when they were new and unpainted to tell them apart from its 72mk1s and 1967 cousins since they all have the same design. Also the ref doors painted on the 1972mk2 helped maintainence engineers to know they were operationally different from the mk1 and 1967 stock. TfL fixed up a few ex Northern line 1972mk1 trains and coverted them to driver only operation and they still on the Bakerloo line today. Some mk2s have mk1 adaped cars mixed into the fleet possible as replacements for damaged and written off mk2 cars.

@antjeisback the GN uses overhead wires as you probably have seen, where as the Watford line uses London Underground-esque 3rd/4th rail supply, which I assume does not quite provide enough power to run 313's to their full 'strength'. (This is an educated guess)

How come te bakerloo stock don't need yellow ends when they are on national rail lines
@jamtart606

Not sure, maybe because it's not a requirement for Tube Trains to have it?

Actually I think you will find that although Network Rail still own the track London Underground have now taken over Harrow & Wealdstone, Kenton, South Kenton, North Wembley, Wembley Central, Stonebridge Park, Harlesden, Kensal Green and Queens Park stations. So technically the Bakerloo line is the most regular service on the tracks. Yellow ended trains will soon be a thing of the past anyway.

citytransportinfo it was only for the district line i presume since that had the last unpainted with half red front train. I'd say all the unrefurbished stock is much better than the refurb version.

@Ryan199403 I'm not really sure, but because of something I filmed in 1999 / 2000 I suspect that the trains were refurbished and painted in LU Corporate livery in the late 1990's.

The 1972 tube stock trains were probably being refurbished at the time you made the first video I know that all of them were refurbished by Easter 1995 but I'm not too sure when they first started doing them.
