I'm quite sure this is a reference to "The Core" which was still kinda current at the time. Especially this scene: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zt5gaLOjrsfXmp8.html The movie wasn't exactly good and is therefore mostly forgotten. That black guy was technically the designer of the ship (which was drilling into the earth to get to the core), but yeah, his main purpose for the plot was exactly basically this. He did volunteer in the movie, other than Chef in the episode. Before some fans start hating me: I actually liked it. It's all just ridiculous af, but quite fun to watch if you can accept it for what it is.

@@Hellwyck First album isn't even close to death metal. And it is closer to NWOBHM than thrash metal. On the other hand, Hell Awaits is their most "death metal" album but it's still clearly thrash.
