What annoyed me the most was that in the episode, "Canada on Strike", they showed that the Danish looked like the Canadians, because they were, "The Canadians of Europe," but they completely abandoned that in season 20.

Ironically season 19 felt more like the 20 year anniversary celebration of the series. A season that reminds us why we loved the show for all these years and that the show still has a lot of craziness in store.

Random? Far from it. Season 18 wasn't random either but it managed to hide its theme quite well while 19 bludgeoned it over your head, painfully blunt even by South Park standards. The season 18 adventures were much more varied overall too, more characters and locations in particular. I honestly think that a few years from now season 18 will overall be thought as better. Season 19 still had its great beats though and PC Principal filled a void that has existed since Isaac Hayes left the show.

They should have but considering that the election results is a one day event there is no way they could have made a strong narrative that could go both ways since the great shift would be far too late into the story so the lead up would have to be very ambiguous so as to go both ways

I think season 20 was a good way to show how the famous quick writing and up to date style of south park isn't entirely flawless. It proves that even a show with ingenious writing like south park can stumble on a loose wire every now and then. But it is still sad how this was their 20th season.

I originally welcomed the change, but there were a lot of things I disliked about the seasons with ongoing narratives, I started missing the episodes where the focus was on the main four boys, and the average episode ended up being pretty boring and with little to no re-watch value.

In my opinion, the entire self-enclosed episodic format South Park used to have, was what made it so rewatchable. Whenever I had dinner, I could put on a random episode and not feel like I was missing something; I got the full experience from just that one episode (save for the very rare two-parters). I really wish they would go back to this.

I know this was a video pointing out the season's flaws, but honestly, it gave me a greater appreciation for it. It showed that Matt and Trey have the ability to perform a complete 180 of the script on the fly and still make something decently funny. Only people as talented as them could have pulled it off.

Here's the story from 1:41 told again but this time let's replace the "and thens" with "therefores" and "buts" John the stick figure adopts a dog in order to deal with the recent loss of his wife, but the dog isn't able to get him out of his grief; therefore he plays the lottery hoping that money will restore meaning to his life, but even after winning he doesn't feel happy; therefore in a desperate bid to feel whole again he joins Scientology. There. A nice narrative that follows through and doesn't use "and then."

I personally hated season 20 because most of it was about the election. I was over the election early 2016 and I didn't want to hear any more about it. I knew South Park would joke about it, but I didn't expect the whole season to ride on it. I don't find political jokes funny and that's because politics is one big, sad joke. Especially the "war" between Republicans and Democrats. They both lie and they both suck.

Whenever I first watched the episode after the election, I could tell that it was not the episode we were suppose to see. It was pretty obvious. I told my friends I was watching with that I wanted to see the real Season 20 that they had mapped out months in advance. I wish Trey and Matt would do like a Season 20.5. In this they would get the scripts for if Hillary won and make it. They could release it on Blu-Ray and call it South Park Alternate Timeline Season 20: The Lost Episodes!

Before I watch, the problem was that south park stories used to take just one episode with exceptions of 2-3 parters, this one took the entire freaking season.

The problem is that the writers didn't write two different story lines... one for if Hillary won, and one for if Trump won. They just soaked up the media and ASSUMED Hillary would win. Therefore, they had to improvise and create crap lol

I really liked season 20 and it just goes to show how reality can be a cluster fuck of random events that make no sense. The episodes reflected the chaos that was occurring in real life and how nothing made sense in the episodes and real life.

I'm pretty happy if they end the serialized structure of the seasons. Old South Park with one topic for each episode (or sometimes 2 or 3) was way funnier. because out of 1000 jokes about one specific topic, they could pick the best ones they came up with and put them into one episode. Now they distribute all of the jokes among the episodes which make them lame and repetitive.

Over complicating it by trying to link the story line over a whole series. I much preferred individual stories for each episode. Doesn’t always have to be political.

Funny thing, memberberries was always my least favourite season. I always felt it was not the SP I loved. Anything after or before is still top for me, but the season with the berries was shit to me. Now I see a critical point of view about it, and I feel not alone haha.

I waited for and watched the first episode back in the late 90's. I was a big South Park fan until season 20. I haven't watched since.

@b- dubz I didn't dislike this season, but I thought it was meh. It has nothing to do with the political aspect. I don't mind South Park doing politics and I don't have any strong opinions towards any side of politics. My issue with the season was that it felt more boring and less funny than most, still enjoyable but not as much, and I have no idea why people think like or disliking something automatically associates you with a political view. Also yes there is something wrong with being condescending to anyone - makes your argument less effective cause its ad hominem.

I get why they set up season long story lines. They make episodes in 6 days and it's much easier to make an episode with a plan. But now it's dependent on real life events and it could destroy an entire season if they can't predict something.

just like everyone said, this is their own mistake for having binged too much on their prediction of the outcome, rather than the outcome itself as it was. This is kind of an amateur mistake too, isn't it? when writing social commentary pieces. but either way, this was pretty educational too.. I never knew about that lecture they gave students.

I can't blame Trump, because he was an easy target and making fun of him has become a dead horse. They shouldn't have serialized the season. South Park episodes were better off having their own stories separate.

To be honest, I thought season 20 was fantastic. The show is and has always been a parody of what’s going on in the world and being a super disjointed mess of wtf, this is insane what’s even happening was pretty much the best way to parody the world. “Everything is fucked, but we’re gonna try and keep going like we were before with some minor changes. Oh wait that isn’t gonna work, we’re fucked and we need to reset.

Yeah, I agree. I found the season alright, enjoyed it, but found the plot way too... well, much. One thing that I liked though, is despite its confused ending, season 20 really captured the entire year that was 2016

It already did, surprising amount of yelling over the very clearly simple fact that two writers gambled their season on a fact outside their control, which more than showing anything about the 2016 election proved some of the risks modern cartoon writting styles have with the whole plan the whole season before starting it.

It's just kind of the way TV has gone over the last 10 years or so. All the great TV I loved in the 90s was short individual episodes you could watch back in any order, Seinfeld, the Simpsons, Star Trek the Next Generation. Now there's this love for longer forms of story telling, Breaking Bad, Stranger Things, Game of Thrones, True Detective saw to that. But you need a really really good story for this style, you can't just wing it. It also helps too if you have characters the viewer is actually meant to care about and get emotionally attached too. Which is hard with a surreal cartoon show which is known for it's extremely edgy, anything goes, outrageous style of dark comedy.

Came here after an internet search for answers after watching S20 and this was totally satisfying. I would say that the South Park creator's biggest mistake was: wanting to create an alternate narrative that relates to actual events. They could just have stuck to the "Clinton wins" narrative and the better plot they had prepared. I'm certain it would have worked and nobody, literally, would have been mad.

I think the whole plot suffered more from the creators imposing Mr. Garrison as Trump. (I could just imagine the hilarious ventures between him and PC Principle) They also should have curved the season in a direction where instead of focusing on the election itself but to the arising change and control that politics has taken on citizens. I think they tried but it didn't reflect well as they jumped the gun on who they thought would win the presidency and went for that narrative instead.

20 wasn't a Bad season at all it had some hilarious episodes and a couple that have made me laugh harder then any other episode in a few years. Obviously the season before it was better but the season a few seasons before that was better the 19. I think it just has ups and downs like anything else

I liked 20 too. I thought the Donald Garrison arc was just a new horrible insufferable character we'd have to deal with from now on like PC Principal. I think I gave a lot of leeway for Garrison winning because I thought they intended to have him win no matter who won the real election. Because having a permanent Trump character in the show who was already kinda like that anyway was bound to cause entertaining drama. And ultimately I cared a lot less about the president arc than I did about the trolltrace arc. Selling out the trolls to Denmark just seemed like something Hillary would do, and its not as if you sympathized with them. Also, I LOVED the mid battle philosophical debate over the moral high ground of trolling to make yourself feel good vs trolling to expose humanity's shittiness.

I just hate how South Park stopped being about Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny. The first 8 seasons were so great because it was about them. Then from seasons 9 - 18 it was still pretty good, but it was less about them. And in season 19 on, it's more about the kid's parents than them. It's far less interesting now.
