When I got married 58 yrs.who we were given an apartment size stove just like the one you're cooking on tonight except it was natural gas...I cooked on that stove for almost 25 years and I love to cook\bake you can get used to cooking on anything I felt blessed just to have it...so glad to see and hear you both in the kitchen ❤

I have great memories of Grandma's kitchen in the summer. There were refrigerator cucumbers and onions in sweet vinegar water on the table for every summer dinner.

Melywood Media, I was surprised to see your comment about dukes and vinegar. My mother-in-law cut her cuke long ways and put the thin hot peppers nd dukes in a glass of white vinegar. We. Ate them with our greens or any fresh veggie out of her garden. I miss those days when she and I would sit down just us to eat. I was a city girl and she just taught me so much. I miss her.

@@dorothyhatcher4714 You can make them too! I think thin sliced hot peppers would be a nice addition to my grandma's recipe which I still make when cucumbers are on sale. I put them in a jar with a lid in the fridge. Thai restaurants serve your version. Believe it or not, your mother-in-law was serving up a thai dish!

@@MelywoodMedia I do make them. We lived in S.C. In the country after I married and I learned to garden. My in-laws had maybe 2 acres of garden. They grew everything. I canned and froze veggies. Now I’m 74 and live in Arizona where there are no gardens desert is rocks and dust. In Phoenix it has taken me 2 yrs to find butter beans or as they are called Lima beans. I don’t cook very much now . But I miss those days. I just had never known anyone to prepare dukes and peppers with vinegar. So good. Thanks for the Thai info. Here everything is really good Mexican food.

@@dorothyhatcher4714 My grandmother also made (and grew) butterbeans, but they are bigger and fatter than lima beans but very similar. Here in the Midwest we don't call cucumbers and onion in vinegar "dukes". We just call them cucumbers & onions. That term is new to me. Also when grandma made butter beans, I think she put milk in them. They were good. I never see them for sale anywhere. I think you have to grow your own.

@@MelywoodMedia I am sorry I guess I hit wrong key every time. I meant cucumber I was typing cukes and it changed to a d instead ofc. I found Lima beans at wall mart inPhoneix. They are small like butter beans and taste the same. People cook so different from place to place. Years ago people boiled a piece of fatback awhile then put beans in and salt took about 30 min. To cook. My family is from the low country of S.C. And ate them over rice. I grew up and married near Ga. line and my in-laws and everyone just ate them as cooked with tomatoes. people in Phoenix just don’t eat like anywhere I’ve ever been. My kids brought me out here and don’t complain much about the food, except the bbq. It isn’t near the same. I know I should not complain and be thankful and I am. God is good. It’s 2 AM so there may be lots of errors in this

My granddad passed away around 10:30 p.m. last night. 6/24/21. He was 86. 😭 He and my grandmother had been married over 60 years. She's on the fragile side. I said that when my pawpaw passed away, she would go downhill. Fast. My mom called me just a few minutes ago today at 4:29 a.m. Now, my mawmaw's in the ER.😭 A kidney stint was removed and the Dr. said there will be some bleeding. Problem is, she's still bleeding. Our hemoglobin is supposed to be around 12-15. Hers is 3. She's almost 83. She doesn't want to be put on a respirator or life support. Not at her age. Please pray for her and all of us. I lost my dad 3/26/15. I still have my mom. I don't know what it would feel like to lose both in the span of 24 hours. God's will. It's in His hands. But, just think. She won't have to wait long to see her husband again in Heaven.

@@19604carmen Thank you very much. He's lived a long life. Though, all the things he's been through and accidents that happen, like a tree knocking him in the head, he should've been dead long ago. But, God kept him here for 86 years for a reason. He did get saved not long ago. I guess that's why God kept him here. Because He knew my pawpaw would get right with Jesus eventually. Wow, God has A LOT of patience. Now, he's up in Heaven with my dad. I wonder what they're doing in Heaven with their absolute perfect lives and perfect health. Knowing they're in Heaven, not suffering anymore, makes it so much easier to cope with our losses.

Oh, I wish I had some field corn! We used to go to the field as soon as it was ready and pick lots of ears and shuck it right in the field. We put a big pot of water on to boil before we left the house so it would be ready. Boy, was it good! They used that corn for feed or silage for the cows, but it was my favorite.

My daddy would shuck the corn and wash it and mama when she came home would cut the corn off the cob and fry it with fried okra, pinto beans and daddy would make the cornbread. Then he would cut a big tomato out of the garden and a cantaloupe, oh man I can taste it now. We lived in Boiling Springs, SC and every year he would grow the prettiest garden you ever saw. Of course he shared with the neighbors too. Love country life.

UPDATE: My grandmother had to have surgery. She had been stapled shut. Reminds me of me. She's on blood thinners so when they pulled out the stint it caused her to bleed. Not too big a deal usually. But, when you're on blood thinners, even a small nick with a knife could be bad. The surgeons found a blood clot in her bladder the size of a cantaloupe. She's in recovery. We want her to be able to come to her husband's funeral. The funeral director, I think, said they could hold him for 7 days. Now, my sister is weak. She has Stage 3 kidney disease. She got diabetes as a side effect from a medication. That's why her kidneys are in bad shape now. She'll be 41 in August. I'll be 45 in October. She's too young for this junk. 😢 Actually, all four of us have been dealing with bad health problems. Pray for us, please. And thank you. GOD BLESS!

Some folks use alum to make pickles crisp but here in Texas we have wild mustang grapes and if after you get everything packed in the jars, put a couple of young grape leaves on top of cucumbers, then pour vinegar mix and process. The tannic acid in the leaves will make the pickles super crisp. Good enough for best of show at my county fair. (Not that I'm braggin')😉

Growing up in Georgia and Texas, summers meant supper or dinner always, ALWAYS included cut up ( sliced) tomatoes and cucumbers, aka dukes. Sometimes the dukes were wilted by slicing and sprinkling with salt. After sitting out for several hours the salt is rinsed off, squeezed under running water to get salt out. Then onions, and sour cream mixed in. Yum.

My mom used to cut her corn the same way and then scrape it to release all the corn milk, she wouldn't and didn't waste a thing, she lived through the depression and tried teaching her children the best she could, may God continue to pour out His many blessings on you and yours, have a blessed day and rest of 2020.we are keeping you'll in our thoughts and prayers🙏🐦💝🐨🙏

Looks delish, like my momma's roast. How long did you cook it? I've lived in small apartments my whole life where this would be considered quite roomy LOL But I've always been told I am a good cook and baker. EXCEPT for cakes. Lord have mercy, I can't seem to do it. But inspired by you I made a cornbread yesterday which was absolutely tender and delicious. They've always been a disaster before :D

Yes! Vegetables are so good seasoned with fried meat grease, s&p and depending on what you’re cooking, sometimes a pinch or two of sugar.

Tammy and Chris, I love how Tammy is just cooking! The apartment kitchen is missing some amenities that we may take for granted. But an oven stove top water in the house is all you need to cook. The sound has a bit of an echo, maybe hang some pillows off camera on the kitchen ceiling to absorb some of the back feed. Love y’all

Tammy, have you ever did fried corn? My Grandma Inez used to make it. She used the same ingredients as creamed, but less liquids and more flour. It was so freaking good! I sure miss it.

@@CollardValleyCooks here in NY, the do blistered corn. They take it off the cob and then fry it with butter until all the liquid is gone and the corn starts to caramelize. It’s different, the texture of the corn is chewier but it’s pretty good.

Susan Holtzlander, I've heard of adding vinegar to sweet milk but not heard of adding sour cream. What is the ratio? Sounds like a good idea! Thanks

@@beverlyharward9631 I found it on Phillips Stokes channel it's almost a 1 to 1 ratio it's 1/3 to1/2 cup sourcream then just fill the cup with milk it's one of her last biscuit recipes that she tells you how to do it

What baffles me is that there is hardly any whole buttermilk on the shelf, the space for it is there but all of it is gone. If they keep running out, why don't they order more?

We have a 24 inch stove. I don’t really like it that much. But, the house had a 27 inch drop in stove and we could not get a drop in stove. A couple that we found said pay Now for the stove and he will get the stove when it gets there it could be three months could be six months could be up to a year. The old store I loved except that the push buttons didn’t all work. And it was electric and I like Gas stove better. TFS

I recently learned to rub my feet with vicks salve when i go to bed. I just started but i know your pain and i had to tell you. Its worth a try and cheap
