Dig Doug when we make it from scratch we usually use drippings, add flour to make a roux and then use evaporated milk, and season it to our liking. If you don’t want to use meat drippings you can always buy white gravy mix (I love pioneer brand). It’s really good and doesn’t take long to prepare.

Bless your heart.....is like Aloha.... it can mean two TOTALLY different things. Also if it is said TO someone it is more likely a good thing. If it is said ABOUT someone....much less complimentary.

I have lived in SoCal and the South (GA/VA) for much of my life (more in the South). Here is how I describe the difference between the two: In California, people will smile at you, shake your hand and look you straight in the eye as they plunge a knife into your gut. In the South, people will smile at you and give you a big hug as they plunge the knife into your back. California is really just a stand in for most of the rest of the country. In the South, people are very friendly, but they also hold their cards close to the vest. They hide their distrust of others with courtesy, or "bless his heart", which is really a euphemism for "he's an ass." I truly love the South and consider it my home... So I can tell this joke!

That second paragraph is really my experience visiting family in the South (NC). I was raised in L.A. but I’ve lived in NYC for 20 years. I love all the warmth and friendliness in most Southern people, but it does make me a little paranoid because I don’t know if they say one pleasant thing to my face, and something else entirely when I’m not in the room. 😂

Ok messed up my comments. My Grandmother cooked all natural. Yes including lard in biscuits. Red eye gravy. Sweet cream butter she made. Loads of collard and turnip greens, sweet corn, pork chops, chicken fried and chicken dumplings, sweet potatoes, cornbread. Fried green tomatoes. OverCooked green beans. Fried or boiled okra. Mashed potatoes. Homemade black berry and peach cobbler made from her own planting , the sweetest plums for her small orchard. Squash fried or boiled with onions. Banana pudding. So many dishes that I can’t remember. Our family ate naturally, from scratch. Bless Mamaw Peeples. No one in our family had serious health concerns. The body is not made from

The 'fried bread' he refers to in the Southwest is probably a traditional American Indian dough that's more like a non-sweet doughnut than actual bread fried. However, I can recommend taking an artisanal bread (white or dark), slicing, frying in butter in a pan on both sides till crisp. Excellent with breakfast, or as the base for a toastie - say xcheese, ham on top of thet and then a big slice of ripe tomato or some tangy pineapple chutney to finish. Yum.
