This is amazing! As a Black Southern woman, I’m infinitely inspired by Southern gothic themes and aesthetics - so much of it is underpinned by racism, white fear and Western fear of traditional West African religion that it make so much sense for BW and BW filmmakers to be at the heart of the genre. Thank you so much for creating this 🤍

I think you are coming at this from such an anti white perspective that you’re forgetting that the whites that settled in the South were from very superstitious cultures in Britain as well as the influence of Native American culture in that area. It’s not based on white fear and racism.

This is so good. I’m actually studying southern gothic in film. And the films I found were all done by Black women!

Well I guess she ain’t coming back so here’s some of mine- midnight in the garden of good and evil, vampire diaries, the gift (2000), interview with a vampire, true blood, beautiful creatures, oh brother where art thou?, the beguiled, skeleton key, American Horror story- Coven, where the crawdads sing. I’ll keep coming back to extend this

I was just in Mississippi and Louisiana this weekend the heat the atmosphere just before the sun goes down was creepy and beautiful at the same time.

Angle heart is more of a noir genre in a gothic setting. A noir has a person hunting for something. A gothic simply unfolds. Pace is very important.

Alfred Hitchcock did a good short film. Its the one with the neurotic mother and the little girl who plays with the doll. Also Sling Blade. Winter's Bone is sort of a combo noir/gothic Id say.
