My somewhat uneducated summery of Southern Goth is that it is a telling of how the South is decaying of its sins of the past, and its failing to confront it. This can be told not only of the South but all region and all parts of the world, making it to me at least the most important and informational of all of the literary world, the world is lost for this dying art and the critical eye and the weight that they bear to our present days. When William Faulkner said " The past is not dead, its not even the past", I can only think he was speaking on this, we are condemned to live in the staleness of the past and not the fresh air of new days, if we at first do not open our hearts to learn and make amends for our sins.

I live in Germany and am looking this stuff up because I made a southern gothic artwork a couple of years ago. I didn't even know this was a style. But the sins of the past can be quite different then what is shown on the surface. In Germany we talked for years at school about Nazi war crimes. We never really talked about the postwar generation. Funny how children do not get traumatized by hearing about attrocities but giving an adult a mirror is a crime.

Fans of Southern Gothic might want to look up a one-season TV series from 1996 called American Gothic. It takes place in the present time(1996) in the small town of "Trinity" South Carolina. Actor Gary Cole plays Sheriff Buck, the most charming, witty, engaging character who is evil personified, ever to appear on television. The series is deeply horrifying without gore. Check it out!
