Footloose in Italy 5 ~ Touring Southern Italy and Sicily
In their 5th visit to Italy, UK filmmakers Debra and Dave travel 900 miles across the very south: featuring fairytale pointy houses in Alberobello, cave dwellings in Matera, the Pollino National Park, then top resorts of Tropea, Scilla and a ghost town. Touring Sicily includes Cefalu, Palermo in a tuktuk taxi, Valley of the Temples, Baroque Ragusa and Syracuse. Film ends with a visit to lovely Taormina and an amazing volcano trip to Etna.

This was by far the most the best video on Sicily I have ever seen, the two of you are simply beautiful people ! I am Sicilian from Palermo ( La Vucciria ) my wife’ family are English . My youngest daughter studied for one year in London at the London School Of Economics and she absolutely loved being there ! Good luck to both of you and keep making these films ! Grazie, Pasquale Ventura

Thank you for uploading the whole documentary. Debra is such a charming host. I really enjoy listening to her. 💜 Most of the photography is very professional. I adore that. Just wish all the footage could be equally stable! 🧡 And I love your taste in music. Maybe you should add more BGM next time. 😊 What a Great Job!

Moorish architecture in Southern Italy started when the Arabs occupied Sicily as part of the Muslim expansion during the ninth century. They brought traditions, knowledge, and architectural techniques with them.

Arriving from present-day Tunisia, the Arabs conquered Sicily in 827 AD, and remained in power for some two hundred and fifty years. In fact, the new conquerors were not usually addressed as Arabs, but rather as 'Moors

Just for fun. Let's add some context to the Ottoman invasion of Otranto. In 15th century Spain King Ferdinand and Isabella were converting Muslims and Jews forcibly as part of the Reconquista of Spain from Muslim rulers of al Andalusia. A little thing that came to be called the Inquisition. Anyone not kissing the ring of the Catholic Inquisitor was considered a heretic and put to death. The Sultan Mehmed ii was not a fan of the Inquisition and so the General Gedik Ahmed offered the citizenry of Otranto the same deal offered by King Ferdinand Isabella to non Catholics, accept Islam or else. 12,000 were massacred. Mehmed II was on his way to end the papacy and thereby save the world from Catholic Christianity. Coptic and Levantine Christians were completely welcome in all other parts of the Muslim word as were Jews and Animists. Due to the death of the Sultan Mehmed the Ottomans were forced to retreat to Albania.
