I remember seeing SP #18 in Dehy Park at Independence, California in 1998. I did not know it was fully restored and moving under it own power. It is strange to see it alive and pulling a passenger train in Durango. I hope the same will happen to its sister engine SP #9 sitting at Laws Railroad Museum. Great work!

And how many years did we stop to look at her through the fence? Never imagined we would see her in action. It's sad we have to go to Colorado, but the old girl needs some income.

That sure is a "hard-working" air compressor on that engine. Must be mounted under the smoke box. Great video, though. Keep 'em coming.

Bob Whitney, did anyone on the crew explain why the 18’s air compressor is running almost continuous? It is a single pump mounted on the fireman’s side with exhaust outside and behind the smoke stack so it is louder than most which exhaust inside the smoke box into the petty coat and out the stack. Maybe letting it run is part of the break in for a rebuilt compressor? A Normal air compressor would be able to maintain the main reservoir pressure in the tank under the fireman’s side of the cab. Thanks for sharing your work! Steve Rippeteau
@whitcraft45785 жыл бұрын
Hi Steve, thanks for watching and commenting. The pump did get replaced and the new one runs a lot less.

I've not seen an engine vent so much steam from behind the stack as this one? Is it from the relief valve I'm guessing?

The DB&RG are planning to convert two of their steam locomotives to burn oil and their using SP-18 here as test and training engine to see how well it would work.
@whitcraft45785 жыл бұрын
Hi A Spanish Inquisitor, I believe the D&S is planning only one, K37 #493. They are planning on purchasing two diesels.
@shanewalters41714 жыл бұрын
493 is in operation again as an oil burner, the rest will probably follow soon once the new diesels arrive

Hold on, I didn't think the SP had narrow gauge locomotives. Is this another example of a standard gauge locomotive converted to run on narrow gauge tracks?
@whitcraft45785 жыл бұрын
Hi Katerina, the 18 was built narrow gauge by the Baldwin Locomotive Works in December 1911 for the Nevada-California-Oregon Railway and was sold to Southern Pacific in the late 1920s. The SP narrow gauge system operated on the tracks of the former Carson and Colorado Railway which was purchased by SP in 1900. Thanks for watching.

any plans for a photo freight?
@Buynot5 жыл бұрын
Yes. That's the main reason why it's there. Lerro Productions it putting on a photo charter sometime next spring.
@kevinmadore17945 жыл бұрын
The locomotive is on loan to the D&S in Durango to assist in training the D&S crews in the operation of an oil-fired locomotive. This is in anticipation of K-37 #493's refurbishment as an oil-fired engine. The proposed Lerro charter in 2019 is simply taking advantage of the locomotive's presence on a railroad where a charter can be run. The owners of the locomotive do not have any significant trackage at their home base in California.

So SP 18 stayed in colorado for nearly a year late November 2018 to late September/early October 2019 correct????
@shanewalters41714 жыл бұрын
You are correct, it was a year lease for the D&S as a test locomotive for converting their K class fleet into oil, 493 recently got restored back into operation and she's running on oil now, the rest of the 490s will follow soon, 473's sisters are being converted right now, the 480s are still running on coal until later I believe.
@whitcraft45784 жыл бұрын
Hi Shane, I'm not aware of any more #490's being restored at this time and #473 is the only K28 being converted at this time. The next oil conversion will be a K36, one of the 80's.

Bob Whitney oh ok. That makes sense. A gorgeous engine she is. I’d love to see her in person.. only problem is its slower than balls. the Mikado classes are much faster
@caelumvaldovinos53185 жыл бұрын
The only reason why it is running so slow is that they are doing shakedown runs. This is the most this locomotive ran since retirement, let alone restoration. They're taking this nice and easy before really letting her go. In theory, the 18 can go faster than all but the K-28's.
@thestarlightalchemist73335 жыл бұрын
Actually, it's faster than the K28s. It has slightly larger drivers
