I've known since I was about 10 that my Southern ancestors (on my mother's side) owned slaves, but knew very little about them. It was never spoken of, although I know my mother was taken to meet the descendants of the slaves when she was only 3 years old. (She had no memory of this.) When I was a teenager, I found a photocopy of a will in my grandparents' house that bequeathed 2 enslaved persons, along with other chattel like a grandfather clock and a feather bed. I was shocked and horrified. Now, I wish I'd asked my grandfather about it. Clearing up my deceased parents' papers, my brother recently found more evidence of slaveholding. My ancestors weren't big plantation holders; they were small farmers. For me, this is family history, American history, and cause for prayer and reflection. This ignorant resistance against the teaching of so-called Critical Race Theory must end if the USA is to ever heal.

Slavery was committed by every ethnic group on this planet, maybe some didn't but alot of us did. Who do you think captured and sold those slaves to the Americans, if it weren't for the local african chiefs who ordered their capture. Africa has alot of slavery amongst themselves from the time of Egypt-Nubian clashes which saw both sides pillaging each others villages and taking slaves too. And I'm also pretty sure that ancient slaves had it much much much harder, their lives were much more brutal. Slavery was an economic - political act of the past and it needs to be addressed objectively, showing just one period of slavery will do nothing if we are to understand the root of it all.

@@ptiaptia7347 I am White, I'm from the south. I am almost 75 years old. I was born and raised in Louisiana, I now live in South Carolina. I was taught all my life that we are all the same in the eyes of God. My Grandfather on my Mothers side and my Father hated the KKK. We were taught from birth that slavery was not something anyone should be proud of. There was an old slave cemetery near my Grandfathers home and every summer when I went to spend time with my grandparents, we went to that cemetery and cleaned and made sure the stones were upright. While there my Grandfather would talk to us about the importance remembering history and how some people were treated and we must never let that happen again. My Fathers family were sharecroppers, the only friends he had were black. He had a great respect for the black community. I know my family was rare in the deep south, but being rare doesn't mean the only ones. There were others. The south has changed greatly since the 60's. I believe the south has made more changes and is much more accepting than northern Americans today. The South still carries the stigma. I truly believe that the blame is country wide not just a "southern thing". I know this is long, hope you don't mind, but, it gets old having the south blamed for all of it. We must accept blame for the part that the south played but it is time for the rest of America to accept the part they played in this awful part of our history.

Very true. A lot of people don't use the word (racist) correctly because many don't even know what it really means. Just to illustrate, there's a video here on KZfaq of a very heavy woman driving her car who is so big she can't attach her seatbelt and she very confidently states that car makers are "racist" because they don't make the seats big enough for heavy people (albeit VERY heavy) to attach their seatbelts. Not sure of the intent of the question, but the American South was the international trade portion of the American economy. The North was protectionist (for their manufacturers) and imposed tariffs on foreign goods. Foreign countries retaliated and placed tariffs on American goods. They also sought commodities like cotton from other countries, such as Egyptian cotton. The imposition of tariffs angered planters and traders in the South. One of the main causes of the War Between the States (American Civil War). As to Persian rugs, many plantation/planters were wealthy and sought European and other foreign goods. France and Britain and other European nations had trade with the Near East, and merchants there likely (not implausibly) had trade relations with Persia (Iran today) and other rug making countries.

You do realize they're all DEAD, right? Unless, of course you're suggesting you just want white people to suffer by virtue of the fact they're white. Despite having never owned slaves themselves, and despite never having had any involvement in slavery, you still want them to suffer BECAUSE they're "white". Kinda paints a different picture as to WHO the real racists are...

You are the same as your ancestors cause the same souls come back again. You will be lead into captivity. This is what the Bible says and if you believe the Bible to be a true book, than this will surely come to pass.

For the people complaining about the fact that slavery is way past us, back into a time in history we don't remember - please do not forget that it has only been roughly 200 years since it was abolished. To quote CK Louis, "That is only about 2 100 year old grandmas placed back to back". That isn't a long time ago. And it has been only about 50 years since the Civil Rights Movement. But it isn't about the length of time that has passed which matters; rather the present conditions that does. Nobody is saying that descendants of slave owners will "inherit" their racism from their predecessors. Nobody is also saying that Blacks today are suffering just as bad as they were during Southern Slavery time. The differences between Blacks and Whites are no longer as harsh, cruel and institutionalized. But can we really claim that there is equality between Whites and Blacks in America presently? Do the police firing at legally innocent blacks remind you a little of slaves being tortured to death? Do rampant occupational, healthcare, social and legal discrimination against the Blacks in all major public institutions show that we have really evolved as a society? The city ghettos and slums versus the suburban sprawls - the case of 'White flight' - is that slightly reminiscent of Jim Crow laws? We suffer not from slavery, but from its long-lasting legacies. And if we continue to deny the existence of discrimination and prejudice in our society, insisting that we have become better beyond the need to improve - we will not get better. And we shall not dare to claim that we are egalitarian and liberal.

We're complaining about the fact that all whites are being blamed for it, when in plain fact, most of our ancestors never came here until AFTER the civil war. It's the racist BS we're reacting to. Almost all my ancestors came over here from Ireland, were worked like slaves, even as children, and even to this day my family has nothing. So why is it OK to put this onto us, just because of the color of our skin?

Yes, slavery is horrible.but it should be said that the original slaves in africa, were sold by other african blacks that had captured them in tribal wars and raids...for land and power..and that is never spoken of, and it should. My grandmother was a black woman, (in cuba) and I can talk, because I am 1/4 black, Yes, no one can take away my heritage of which i am very proud to be....but....i hate it when my brothers and sisters ignore these truths that we are here because our own brothers captured us and sold us to the ship captains...(way back when), yes, and also, SADLY IN TODAY 2019....black people are still taking, capturing, and ENSLAVING black people and selling them into slavery in africa, both FOR sexual and for work... VERY SAD ! now in 2019.... and we need to face this reality..! because my black brothers and sisters only talk of the white man...and never mention these truths....and WE, OUR ANCESTORS, are also guilty of this, .lastly but not least, in the time of slavery, here in America, there were 900 black Slave owners.. ! ! ! yes... the archives prove that there were 900 black slave owners that owned black slaves...( i know, hard to believe ! ) ( I saw that truth spoken, by that black man that does that tv show about ancestry....he said it... and that is never spoken of either ! . We need to realize that we have not been innocent of slavery ourselves and that WE are still doing it in Africa.! The world never changes and history repeats itself and we need to confront our own demons, to be fair, because God is fair and we must be fair and just. We have to change the rhetoric , we need to be honest with ourselves.....and that is where real change will happen, i believe ! thank you for reading. if you respond, I may not see it because i am rarely on the computer...but i might...anyway, . thank you for reading.
