A little advice from a guy that's running Mill for a long time you shim up the small end. you want to center the pith of the log so that it's parallel to the log deck that way you get ring centered saw boards they dry straighter and you get more wood out of the log.

Zoe if you measure from the ground to the center of your log and shim the small end for the first cut you will get more lumber out of your logs these measurements will have to be taken on the first cut and third to maxamize your lumber production. just a suggestion.

That was some nice wood! Keep cutting it like that and your workshop is gonna be awesome. We used to saw quite a bit of Oak for structural purposes. When we had straight logs with taper in them, we did it differently. We found that if we kept the grain straight in the boards they didn’t warp, twist or bow as badly. Checks and splits reduced significantly too. And, we also found that we got fewer boards with wane on their edges. How? On cuts 1 & 3…. We found the difference between the butt end and the tip. Dividing that by two gave us the amount we needed to shim the tip. This puts the core (or centerline) of the log the same height from the bed of the mill. Adding a shim in the center stabilized the log. Example: 20 (butt) - 16 (tip) = 4” (difference). Shim @ tip = 2” Cuts 2 & 4 are then made with the log flat on the bed. As I said, this puts the cure on the same centerline. It also makes all the growth rings concentric about the center. We don’t have pine here but, it made a significant difference in oak. The small amount of math and work involved easily paid for itself in better quality lumber. As a bonus, the center boards are truly quarter sawn! Please don’t take this as a criticism. I admire how far you’ve come and just wanted to suggest an option that worked for us!

I Usually measure deck to pith on the fat end and use the toe jacks to kick the skinny end pith up to match. I understand your method but I think we both get to same results differently .

On logs with taper if you jack up or spacer the small end you'll get more wood out of it. You roughly want the centers of each end of the log at the same height.

Yes you may get an extra slice but you will lose the symmetry of the grain as you will be cutting on an angle in relation to the grain layering Think about it.

I’ve been a sawyer for 40 yrs, you guys need to add a bord edger to your little operation along with a power feed on your mill . That would allow you to edge while your mill was sawing of another board using production and saving time

I'm assuming that edger is a totally separate machine? Is that just so you didn't have to turn the wood as many times in the mill to get it square? This stuff is all new to me, but I am closing on a 92 acre property and am going to have a ton of usable timber to build with/ sale, so I am doing my homework now. Definitely looking to maximize my profits and minimize my production times etc obviously

Great work and nice looking logs but you mentioned cutting your lumber to 8 foot lengths for final use. If you are going to cut your lumber to shorter lengths anyway cut your logs closer to that length. They will be easier to handle and you will get more lumber out of your log as you will not be working with as much of a taper. And you should shim up the smaller end of your log to get the centers of your timber more in line. Will give you more stable lumber cutting more evenly with the grain. I would probably have cut that log in half (If I was using for 8 foot lumber) and then trim the ends after drying as it will get rid of any checking and cracking that may occur when drying.
