I worked for an unfinished furniture store doing custom finishing for 8 years. We only used 150 grit sandpaper for pine and 180 grit sandpaper for oak prior to staining and clear coating. The finer grit sandpaper ends up polishing the wood and doesn't allow the stain to soak in as much. Your clear coat will level out any imperfections in the wood. Your table came out great!

You guys seem really nice and cool, and I love the effort on this table! As a professional table maker, I can give you a few pointers for next time. Pocket hole screws are ok but you must use glue or else the table will begin to separate within a relatively short amount of time. By sanding up to 800, you closed the pores of the wood and made it unable to accept stain, next time, stop at 220! you cannot feel the smoothness of the wood anyways, because poly is a topcoat and rests above the wood. By the way, make sure you do at least 4 coats of poly on the top and bottom equally! Finally, when you attach the base to the tabletop, make sure you have slotted holes in the base to allow for wood expansion because if you do not, the table will bow or cup within a short amount of time. Please let me know if you have any questions and again, you guys seem great and good job for your first time!

I used pocket holes and glue on two of my tables. Been outside under a patio cover for nearly 5 years. Works fine, but I'm cheap, so after the glue was nice and hard, I actually took all the screws out to reuse them later! So, glue will be just fine.

@@spudth I don't use pocket screws often, but I have not bought new ones in a few years. I realized most people only glue up tables tops, so if I was using glue and screws, what was the point of screws? I don't have a lot of clamps, so pocket screws are now mini-disposable clamps to me. When they get too stripped out, I leave them in. Otherwise, I wait for the glue to dry nice and hard and take them out! I still laugh a little when I do it.

Looks great! I always use glue. I’d use a biscuit jointer (because I have one), or a Domino over pocket holes with the glue simply to avoid all the pocket holes under the table. I’m also a big fan of real breadboard ends. They add stability to very large tables and they are fun to make, I think they look cool too. I’m not too particular on the brand of stain, but I do like to use the staining pads during application. On soft woods (pine or alder), I use a homemade Pre-stain.

I love pocket hole joinery, and use it whenever I can. But in the case of a table top, I think I'd go with offset double row biscuits and glue. (and lots of clamps!) The primary reason, being to minimize any chance of splitting , warping, twisting and cupping that softwood framing lumber is famous for.

First off, Great Job!! as for the table: The stain I have come to love is Rustoleum Stains, they seam to be easier to apply and look real good. I also would have conditioned the wood prior to the stain this prevents blotchiness. The pocket-hole idea I like and its less messy than the glue-up.

Just happen to come across this video and I must say that table came out great especially for never doing it before. Just a side note, there’s no need to sand to that high of a grit, depending on the wood and what finish your using 220 is usually more than enough. Your top coat will determine the smoothness of the final product. And as far as pocket holes or biscuits or dominoes, there’s no need for any of them. Glue and clamps is the only thing you need. The pocket holes are good if you don’t have clamps but it’s really just holding it together until the glue dries. And biscuits and dominoes are only used to help with alignment(which does help quite a bit) but adds very little strength to the structure. Not sure if you mentioned how you attached the top but make sure you used something that allows for expansion and contraction otherwise the top may crack or warp. Hope this helps for your next project. Great work.

To answer your questions: I would have used the Kregs with glue. I also would join the pieces together upside down on a very flat surface. I think 800 is overkill but it can't hurt! I like Minwax products best. I also plug all those Kregs holes and I'd especially do it on the base pieces where they are visible and also will eventually collect dust. Beautiful table and your floors are awesome.

The table looks great and compliment the decor in the room. I personally put tarp down when staining over concrete. I understand that it is a work area and superficial but if you stain a lot it really makes the area look run down after a while. I would have done any different with the stain. It looks real good with the sorta two tone effect because of the different sanding grit. It adds just a little character that isn’t distracting at all but adds a little dimension. I would have been nervous about using pocket holes instead of biscuits and glue. You took a chance and it worked out very well. I’m inspired to give it a try.

I would used dowels and glue on those, wood expands and retracts. I would also used a pre conditioner before staining, I saw some blotches on the wood. Overall it was a solid build.

Pre conditioner is a must for getting a even finish on pine. Good suggestion.
@robertcombs4916
@robertcombs4916 3 жыл бұрын
Yes always use pre stain conditioner but the reason the top came out lighter is because you sanded it to a much higher grit that the rest of the table. The lower the grit the more stain will absorb resulting in a darker color.

You can use coffee to make stain, and you can even use shoe polish as stain, which I've used both and they turned out beautiful! Also, you should always use glue to strengthen the bond and prevent future development of separation, it just makes it much stronger and cleaner.

Great looking table. As a finishing touch suggestion, you can plug those pocket holes with some glue and dowel. Then saw them off with a straight kerf finishing saw. Give it a sanding and it gives it the next level character when staining.

Let me start by saying great job, especially for your first time. Also, I’m extremely jealous of your whole setup, (now) you’re able to mill it, dry it, build it, and soon be able to sell it all in one place. I agree with everything @Nathan says below, he would be a great source of intel for any future projects. I graduated with an art degree, specializing in woodworking and really started getting into furniture towards the end. I actually ended up making my bedroom suit(dresser and 2 bedside tables). I would’ve used biscuit joiner w/glue and biscuits vs screws and definitely would’ve only sanded to 220 since you’re using poly to finish it. Good job sanding in between coats of poly, a lot of people miss that step and it really helps with the final smoothness and durability. I also would’ve done at least 4 coats on the top, but that’s always something you can go back and do later. My dresser is 3ft high by 6ft wide, and after I did three coats I thought it was enough. A classmate said, “ok, how about I toss my keys on it and see if they scratch it or not, then you’ll know if it holds up to normal wear and tear.” that’s when I decided two more coats. Now, over 10 years later and still not a scratch. One last thing, since it’s a table, why didn’t you router the edges? Most table tops have at least a 1/4”, or a more decorative edge, rather than leaving it straight. Just a couple things to think about the next time you do a “big build”. Oh yea, good choice on finishing materials, that’s what I use. Some may not agree, but when I’m applying the poly I use the super cheap foam brushes. You don’t have to worry about brush strokes, bristles possibly falling out, or cleaning them. Still, great job‼️

Looks great, I would have used biscuits and glue with metal C shaped bands on each end to keep it square. I also would have wood filled the seams and only gone to like 180 or 220 on the sanding. Yours looks beautiful and I hope it lasts a lifetime.

We kept finding we needed a folding table. This is so easy to store. kzfaq.infoUgkxStL0QRChBju4aQlnTrRgBZvafFog0KU3 Opening and closing is easy as well. It has a great handle for carrying around the house. Its pretty lightweight and slides around easy. We bought it for our daughter’s first sleepover. Breakfast was a blur - but 12 7-8 year olds fit at the table with room to spare. We used it at thanksgiving and 6 adults fit comfortably on each side plus 2 on either end for a total of 8. Super easy to clean up afterwards as well.

Have you considered using the Kreg plugs to fill in the holes left on the legs from the pocket hole joints? They will glue into the openings, can be sanded off then stained to match the rest of the wood and you almost don't see anything afterwards.

Thanks for the comment Stan. I do wish I had used the Kreg plugs to hide those pocket holes. My lack of wood working knowledge failed me there. I will use them on the next build.

Nice table, I was ask to make a table and it was more of a rustic type so did not have to care about gaps between boards as much. Being a table I'm concerned as food and other things get between then. I glued this one up with biscuits and cross members underneath to help keep things tight, although I really like the pocket screw idea. Finished with dark walnut stain and 5 coats of polyurethane on top, 2 on bottom. Made benches to match. As far as sanding I went to 120 at most. As you found out you can get the gain too smooth and stain does not get into it.
