In todays video, we travel up and down BNSF's Red Rock Sub, where we chase a couple trains, see multiple ATSF leaders, catch one and only Frankenbonnet, and see a bit of foreign power in the form of Ferromex, Norfolk Southern, and Canadian National.

A warbonnet, 100th anniversary CN unit, and a ferromex unit is one of the best lashups I’ve ever seen

Great to see 2 ATSF Warbonnet leaders and the frankenbonnet! I remember not too long ago it felt like everyone was catching a Warbonnet, this being around the time BNSF pulled many of them out of storage after a while. I’m guessing for the ones that don’t have PTC, it’ll be installed on some that are planned to be rebuilt. Entirely a guess from me.

Thank what I’m saying! Yes, PTC will be installed on all the rebuilds since it’s a federal requirement now.

Im just really getting into railfanning and your videos have been instrumental. Im up in Western Canada so I've never had the pleasure of seeing a warbonnet in person. Also love seeing Canadian units down south.

Great video! I think you are correct about that hypothesis about that Dash 9 with ATSF panels. Because I've noticed that many of BNSF's Dash 9s have ATSF AC units that look brand spankin' new.

6:45 probably was NS 28X before it got on BNSF. 28X originates in Croxton, NJ. (Norfolk southerns big yard for the New York area) and terminates In Chicago. the way the train is built and the JB-hunt containers make for think that was 28X

@southernplainsrailfan that franken engine you call it @8:57 there is a person on KZfaq that worked on that engine. Look for "hyce" which is his channel name. The engine caught fire so they had to reskin that middle area. They have nicked named the engine "the war pumpkin"

How do railroads determine what locomotives go on which train? Do they determine how much HP they need to pull train and just start grabbing whatever idle units are available? Does the Engineer have a say in what locomotive is at the head end or is it up to chance?
@Southern_Plains_Railfan
@Southern_Plains_Railfan Жыл бұрын
Your guess is correct. When a train is made in the railyard, they use a computer program to calculate how much horsepower is needed to pull it. Then, they pretty much take whatever powers available and put it on the train. No, the lead loco is usually up to chance, unless the yard master wants to do something different.

I’m a relative newbie railfan so patience please! What is/what defines a ‘warbonnet’? Ditto frankenbonnet? Anything related to the Indigenous headdress?
@Southern_Plains_Railfan
@Southern_Plains_Railfan 11 ай бұрын
The “warbonnet” is a red and silver paint scheme developed by the Santa Fe in the late 30’s for their Super Chief passenger train. Yes, it did take inspiration from Indian headdresses. Any engine wearing that classic red and silver paint job is a warbonnet. Many locomotive models have been painted as such in the near 90 years the paint job has existed. Fakebonnets are still warbonnets, but they say BNSF on the long hood instead of Santa Fe. Some were painted as such (like the 700 and 4700 series Dash-9’s) and others were patched after the merger (like the 500 series Dash-8’s and SD75M’s) Several Dash-9 fakebonnets say Santa Fe on the nose, but they are still considered “fake” because their hood reads BNSF.
