I want to let u know that when I lived in Pasco county several years ago my best good friend and I were put in a very similar situation, but I owned a 19' cc with a 115fourstroke Yamaha. What we went through would change our friendship bond forever. We calculated upwards 50mph winds 6'swells with a 3'storm chop my cockpit had 10" of rain lighting strikes close to my boat ! When it struck the seas the flash was redish orange as it struck the waves. One lighting strike struck the fishing rod in the rocket launcher on top of my t-top sending the deep sea okuma to the floor which we found out after we made it out by of the storm. Fuckt up shit! At one point we lost our instruments so I navigated by compass. I was heading due east at 40knots some how got spun around a complete 180degrees heading west not in control at all. Sorry for the long message but I have watched you from the beginning and I feel we have a stormy brother hood connection thanks for true stories and just for your info there is no dry ride boats . LoL

I haven’t fished in a while,but after a long day of the whole adventure,to have it all pay off at around midnight when you eat is so rewarding,there’s nothing like it.and then you sleep like a baby.Im so glad I saw this video,because I can’t wait to go fishing!!!

Hats off to Dan, that was the epitome of keeping your cool. It is always easy to think you will be able to handle that type of pressure but much harder to perform in the face of chaos. What would be helpful for others would be to hear from people that have experienced a similar situation and what key strategies helped them navigate and get home safely. Having some point of reference with a compass heading prior to the storm reaching you could at least get you pointed in the right direction if your electronics go out. This also can be difficult with the lightning all around causing compass irregularities. I was surprised with the lightning strikes so close that the GPS survived. I would be shocked if some of your electronics are not compromised in the future so if anything strange starts to happen down the road keep that in mind. I am not sure you could have done much better except for having your life jackets on but you already knew that. Dan fantastic job keeping your cool, your facial expressions say it all as your composure and focus was impressive.

We got caught in a storm just like that here in Boynton beach while sword fishing and it was terrifying, so crazy how quick it goes from flat calm to 40knot winds 20 miles off shore. You guys did a great job keeping your cool, made for a good video.

Unfortunately, been there and done that, and my tower got hit by lightning, up here out of Daytona area, and even though you have it all on video, most people don't realize how scary it really is being in that situation. The video does no justice to how it really looks and how bad the situation really is. After my experience I get anxious every time I hear thunder. Glad you made it back safe!

Thanks for sharing the experience. The cooking of the fish Roe brought back some fond memories of my dad, when he used to take me fishing and introduced me to eating fish roe. Since that time I've eaten a many types, both fresh and saltwater varieties. The way I was taught was to just wrap the sack in a strip of bacon , salt, pepper to taste. Frying it up the same as you did.

Storm. Been there done that. Best you can do is hold the bow into the wind. A sea anchor and a quality hull with good floatation is your best friend. Capt. did a great job.

I have a couple things for ya. 1. When in sloppy conditions such as what you encountered keep your head up, stop looking down for a couple reasons. One you are taking your eyes off what is coming up another boat, floating debris lost lobster trap stuff you don't want to hit. Second that is how you blow out your neck. I have a C3-T1 fusion. Putting your head down while pounding around is gonna play hell on your c-spine. Not much you can do about your knees, feet and lower back except ride through it. #2. The reason your compass went haywire is more than likely due to all the magnets that were placed around it. Cell phones, cameras and other items in close proximity. The odds of dual loss of Gps/plotter and compass at the same time are pretty astronomical. Next time clear all the stuff from under over and next to the compass. Last ditch use the compass on your phone or download the navionocs app it will at least point you in the correct direction. Next would be you checked the radar on your phone and knew the direction it was coming from and moving towards. Obviously when you started your run home you were taking the seas on the chin therefore you aren't going to have a following sea 2 min later. Use that radar app to find the thinnest part of the storm and head for that, yep it's going to rain out and build back over that thinner portion however it you time it correctly you just might get lucky and miss the absolutely worst of it. Running lights on, absolutely should have had PFD on as well as EPIRB located in a spot such as your pocket or inside your rain coat in the event you rolled or where thrown. I have been in several storms in West Central FL Clearwater Beach to be exact. The absolutely worst was on a commercial trip on my 40 Dorado. High pressure system set up off the east coast and just like that we had an easterly wind of 45-50kts. Since the wind was blowing from shore to offshore we had a tall stacked sea of 8-12 ft with 3 seconds between them and 95 miles to go. In laymans terms it was like standing rapids in a river. The bow would just clear the top of a swell and before it could ride down the back side the next wave was crashing over the boat. It was my last night on the grounds when this monster kicked up, 3 am I woke to pots and pans falling onto the deck and I looked up with my spot light to see nothing but whitewater up over top of us. It was very dangerous as we had the anchor out and hsd to pull it without turning or getting broadside to the swell. Needless to say the 5.4kt ride home realllly sucked. I had my epirbs at the ready and called my wife from the sat phone every 30 min with our exact gps location and our speed and eta to port. I told her if she didn't hear back from me within 40 min to call the USCG with my last known position and speed, heading ect. Storms pop up despite the best technology we have at out disposal. I had Sirius XM weather on my Garmin and had wx on the VHF each day and night listening for updates and changes and none of models forecasted the hell we were painfully plowing through. We heard several mayday calls on our ride home. Once we pushed in 40 mile from where we were it started laying down to 6-8ft then down to 4-6 ft by 30 miles to go. Took us 9-10 hours to get out there on day one of the trip and this was day 6. It took us over 24 hours to reach the pass. It was nerve racking to say the least.

Tempting Mother Nature eh? Thats a good way to meet your maker Heiko. You guys were lucky...that time.

I’ve been running boats offshore,both charter and private tournament boats ,for 36 yrs and I have three suggestions for situations like this.One,always keep track of your compass heading so if you lose your electronics you can still get back.Two,keep a Garmin Inreach on your boat at all times so you can signal for help,let loved ones know where you are and you also have the ability to use the Garmins tracking and charting capabilities if your main plotter goes out.Third,always were a life jacket when it gets this bad because if the worst happens you won’t have time to dig them out.Great video guys and glad you made it back safe

Back in 1990, way back when. I took a direct lightning hit on my Hatteras traveling to Ocean City Maryland to fish the White Marlin Tournament. It knocked out all of our electronics and did some minor engine damage to exhaust sensors, as well as gremlins though the boat for the remaining years I owned it. It was on the Delaware Bay and the rain and wind were fierce. On my current boat I paid for Sirius XM Weather and it has been great. Lightning as you know from that close hit is very very scary. I know I don't want to do it again. Also, you never know who else out there is like you guys running through the storm blind. Next to the lightning that would be my biggest concern. Yeah...wear the vests... I know Capt. Dan has an inflatable... both of you should wear one. Just sayn. Good video too.

At least your gps kept working… mine stopped working 30 miles out, used my compass and headed east saw land and it was the Miami coast line. 😂 refueled in Miami and headed back to Tavernier. Next boat had a radar.

I laughed the entire time y’all were in it . Spent my far share of days in storms commercial fishing back in the 90s . When you make it home it makes for great stories later 🤙🏼
