Finally got it up and running. The only delays we had was because we realized we needed some extra parts (I’ll list that below) kzfaq.infoUgkxihMYiJNXcHdbH-7ihymsLz61l7jVyb5O . So we have a loft where our current hvac just couldn’t seem to keep cool during the summer. We have been using a window unit since we bought this house over 6 years ago (all the houses in this neighborhood were built in the 80’s and majority of the houses built like ours use a window unit). I hate window units because they are just so noisy and the one we had really only cools one side of the loft. I had contemplated upgrading our current HVAC, but with all the rising prices these days, it would take years before saving up enough to do that. With the advice of my father-in-law (used to run an HVAC business), he recommended we get an inverter instead. We thought we bought everything we needed, but there were just a few other parts we didn’t anticipate needing (which is what caused most of our delay). My friend and father-in-law did all the work to get it installed and running and now we have nice cool air circulating nicely throughout the entire loft. It is very quiet and even the outside unit is much quieter than our main HVAC unit. Saved ourselves thousands getting this.

Robert you need to run A/C hose between the two units and get rid of the copper line. The vibration between the two units will crack the copper line or worst the coils in the units.

Hey Robert , I just installed one myself on my KW, instead of using the copper lineset that comes with the unit I got a custom R410A rubber hoses made to handle the road vibration. Those copper ones will not last. Also, instead of using those screws to hold the inside unit docking plate I used 4 locking nuts and bolts . It looks nice though.

Please consider putting a rubber grommet on that electrical line that comes out of the breaker box and goes through the floor. What you did looks ok for a while but if the wire moves, it may eventually rub through the tape and then the wire. Have good days!

I've seen a few comments regarding the copper lines being coiled and how they're going to prevent the oil from returning to the compressor. NOPE! I've installed several of these mini-splits on homes and even the manufacturers recommend coiling the excess at or near the outdoor unit to save the factory flares which are considered far superior to most flares that an installer can make on site. That's why the line-sets come in fixed lengths with both ends having flares and fittings preinstalled. It's a misconception that oil is returned to the compressor by gravity. It is not. It is carried by the freon.

Great idea but I recommend that you mount the condenser onto the back of the cab instead than on the headache rack. The cab is on air springs and will flex the copper line up down and sideways til it snaps. You should have zero motion between condenser and evaporator.

Hey Richard nice install and that looks like finally for real going to keep your truck cool and warm, But you really need to take the wires out of the panel box you installed and use romex connectors to bring the wires into the enclosure because of the vibration. Your truck will go on fire when the wires short out. I have seen a truck go up in flames their really is no time to do any thing but get out.

Question ❓ Why didn't you look at the unit that was for a semi ? It was on ebay. You could get 12 volt or 24 volt unit. It's was a smaller than that house unit you installed. Yes it's a bit more money but it's for the back wall of a semi ! And it works off the batteries. Your batteries are charged by you APU . Or maybe looked for a APU that is an A/C system and a generator ? ( Which mounted under the bed and thru the floor for the hoses and wires )? . But it's a bit late now. I hope the vibration and pot holes from the highway doesn't beat it or shake it to pieces ! Is that unit a 120v or 220 v ?? Good luck

Those are not worth a flip truck will have to idle for long periods of time to charge the batteries. Best thing to do is a ac like this or a small window unit being ran off of a generator. Espar heater for the winter or a Chinese equivalent.

Cheers.

I always soap bubble the flare joints when checking for leaks. Also leaving copper coiled up may cause oil return problems. Eventually leading to failed compressor. I am wondering if the error code was caused because the valves at the condenser were not open. Compressor tried to run and caused some sort of voltage drop. Due initial current draw. (LRA) i do ac down in fl if anything i can help just ask.

Great idea, and a real nice neat install, but the cab is on rubber mounts and the headboard is not. The cab will be moving and may flex, bend and chafe the copper lines, especially where the hole is so high up. The higher up the hole, the more it's going to move. I hope you get the problem fixed whatever it is.

Protect the insulation on your cooling lines as it does not stand up to the sun, rain and wind. Get some additional insulation like rubber insulation that you put on water pipes that you put over the insulation. The original insulation dies in a year or two. The unit itself, at least in my experience, is good.

These Mini Splits are NOT made to take the vibration of riding on a truck. The rubber mounts MAY develop a resonance vibrating. The interior unit will probably survive but I predict the outside unit will have trouble in the compressor long term. Even the mounting feet may fatigue and break. You will at least need struts to the top of the unit.

This many months later what would you have differently. What issues have you had. I’m looking to mount mine between the exhaust brackets and run everything under and up inside. I seen 1 comment about the compressor lines?

Did those copper lines stand the test of time? About to install one of these on my rig and wondering if I should replace the copper as one of the commenters suggested.

Lines are doing fine. The first time we did this we attached to headache rack and that killed it. It now lives on the back of the cab on air ride. And is still doing great! Copper lines and all. Just keep them tied up.

I saw in the comments that you move the condenser from the headache rack to a cab mount. Did you have trouble with the lines or the condenser. I think I will move mine off my headache rack

Ok. I going to ask. The APU should have also provided a A/C compressor pump. That unit on your chain rack won't last long. Will you be hooking the inside part of the mini system to the APU a/c system?

apu doesnt have a a/c system it acts as a generator only

That's actually changing your frequency. It should be 60hz based on speed. There should be a voltage regulator separate.
