In this video we take a look at a Jeep Liberty 3.7 that was purchased from an auction and then towed into the shop from a local dealer. You could get the engine to start on occasion but when you did it had a lot of mechanical engine noise and would not idle. Let's see what we find. -Enjoy!

At right around 15 minutes I was getting anxious saying "just do a compression test" then came the words of wisdom that will stick with me for ever...." A compression test proves a cylinder can seal, but it does not prove it can breath" priceless advice right there.

However, a running compression test will show how it breaths, but ours does not run 😉

I LOVE these video using scan tools and the PICO scope!!! That's one think I would love to get better at is using those tools and knowing what I'm looking at when using them. Because they can tell you a lot of information with out touching much of the vehicle. Thank you for taking your time to film this and also editing it and posting it. I know your a busy busy man but it's greatly appreciated Eric!!! Hope you have a great day and will be looking forward to the next video what ever it may be I'll be watching it anyways!!! Damn Eric, you're amazing. First try, right on the money with the diag. I was stumped looking at that RCT but your idea clicked right away. Your channel has driven home the idea that a scope and good scan tool (as well as competency) are CRITICAL to a shop serious about diag.

What an excellent case study. I suspect many professionals would shrug and never explore it enough to find such compelling evidence. I was thinking it was going to be a timing issue, but then when I saw the spark coincident with TDC compression, I had to reconsider. Also I didn't jump at the most important finding, extremely HIGH torque to spin over those two cylinders. These are the problems that make auto repair so interesting.

When I heard it crank and kinda run, my first thought was some kind of timing issue. Luckily you have the proper tools, and the most important tool under your hat, to quickly diagnose. Nice work! Can’t wait for part 2 to see what is the true issue.

It really is amazing how clearly you can see mechanical things happening with electronic test equipment when you learn how to use it and how much time it can save you. Especially if you notify the customer and they decide they're going to get rid of the car and now you have junk torn apart that you have to put back together versus just pulling some test leads off the vehicle.

Eric O, a great diagnosis. Right here is where having the right scan tool, understanding how to use it and understanding what it tells you is so important. Twice I slapped my head. First was when you surmised that the high current draw was due to suspected exhaust valve failure to open on paired cylinders and the second when the pressure transducer profile revealed the second peak during exhaust stroke. My ‘dial on hose’ compression tester would say good compression on all cylinders. I guess the ‘popping’ of compressed air back into the intake manifold is a further clue but it’s significance is with the benefit of hind sight

Nice video! Not knowing typical peak starter currents I would have suspected 4 low compression cylinders and been dead wrong. Your experience once again pays off. You could have, however, just pulled those 2 plugs and re-ran the relative current test. That might have sucked some crud into the cylinders but would have been just as definitive.

Pressure transducers for the scope are a game changer. Replaces 4 tools, compression gauge, vacuum gauge, leakdown tester and timing light...and that's just by using it for in cylinder testing! Dooesn't even include using it on the fuel rail, transmissions, engine oil, etc. Definitely a must have for advanced diagnostics, or even basic stuff. There are some vehicles that I use my scope, ignition pickup and pressure transducer to check the ignition timing.

Love your break down on your diagnostic thinking, its like a master class of a who done it for engines. My only wish would be to see a properly working cylinder go through its paces to show a comparison. I guess I could imagine what it would be but the thought went through my brain when I saw the one with the sticking exhaust valve. Love your video's , I honestly think your prescribe to the Kiss method, you take a complex situation and break it down so dumb guys like myself can catch up to your thinking. Thank you. It gives me hope that some day because you can do it, so could I.

I've seen up to the diagnosis of the exhaust valve not opening, now I'm excited to see what it looks like mechanically - and if exhaust shooting out the intake during the valve overlap did any damage while it was running (which you can see with the steep drop after that second 150psi peak in pressure) - edit, you talked about this literally 5 seconds after I unpaused the video lol
