In this video I look at a 2014 Chevrolet that has a customer complaint of the battery dying overnight. Indeed he is correct, it has a big draw sucking the battery dead in several hours. Let's have a look to find the issue. -Enjoy!

Eric, I really enjoy these educational follow along videos. I'm just a bit confused at 3:33 where you describe how an open fuse can cause a false voltage drop reading. I'm guessing the cause of this is either "ghost voltage" on the voltmeter or that you're measuring the voltage drop of a circuit that is active and the voltmeter acting as a fuse that isn't blown?

Excellent troubleshooting. I believe what makes a great mechanic is one who understands both, mechanical AND electrical issues. Most mechanics can only read codes and replace parts, but this is true troubleshooting at its finest. Using the K.I.S.S method (Keep it Simple Stupid), as I was taught as a young technician. So many used cars out there with battery disconnects as a bandaid instead of finding the real problem! I wish more mechanics like you existed in this world. S.M.A is a first class operation in my book. When some say “take it to the dealership,” it still comes down to the person working on your car… not the facility!

Awesome video as always! I would like to make a small point of clarification to help. The reason your voltage drop test works across a fuse is because when current is pulled across a fuse, it heats up, that heat causes the resistance across the fuse to go up. So a bigger fuse won't heat up as much, so less resistance change. Regardless, your method definitely works and you can easily see that one fuse isn't acting like the rest. It points out a few things that people might care about though...for instance, the instant a current is drawn across a fuse, it hasn't heated up yet, and won't show a voltage drop. Hope that helps!

My 2014 chevy Cruze diesel had a problem that the battery would go dead overnight but only when it got cold outside. This problem destroyed 2 batteries in 18 months and Chevrolet would not allow the dealership to troubleshoot the problem . They just kept saying that there was nothing wrong. About 2 years into my ownership of this vehicle, an O2 sensor went bad and the dealership replaced it. The Battery never went dead again! I replaced the Cruze with a Honda Passport.
