Chevy Truck: No 4 Wheel Drive W/ Code C0327

In this video we have a look at 2004 GMC 1500 5.3 that came in with a customer complaint of "no four wheel drive." The shop said it has a code C0327 "Encoder Circuit Malfunction" stored in it. They also said that the encoder motor was replaced along with the transfer case AND the vehicle had been taken to the dealer in an attempt to repair it. They gave up so now it's our turn. -Enjoy!

The mouse motel had mice in it! 😁 I seem to never win that gamble - if I go inside, the problem is under the hood. If I go under the hood, it's inside. Never fails! Hope you feel better, man. Sinus infections SUCK. Only had one my entire life, back when I was living in CA (I got some nasty stuff out West a couple times) 17 years ago. Hurt so bad I couldn't laugh, cough or bend forward in any way. Started after I spent a cold day out in the shed rebuilding a Honda QA50 engine - nose got the cold drip, and it was all over from there. Took me a good 4 days to kick the pain, too. I always have to watch stuff like that, thanks to my asthma, it'll usually go right to my lungs. I got busy here all of a sudden. Had to tow in a dead '04 PT Cruiser with a snapped rubber band, and got my buddy's girlfriend's '03 Buick that needs tires, hub bearings, and sway bar end links. Coincidently I had a guy stop by yesterday with a '02 Chevy 1500 with no communication to the transfer case. He had been playing swaptronics, and just wanted to read and clear the codes, so I did that. He had a Cardone x-fer case motor (I know there's a name for that unit - brain fart right now ...) that split in half, lol, and a junkyard unit that didn't work either. I really didn't have a clue as to what direction to point him in - he'd already replaced every electric and electronic part on the 4x4 system. I figured the no-comm was due to the junkyard unit he installed. I just got paid to read and clear codes, so he's on his own there. Wouldn't doubt if there were mice in this one in the exact same spot!

Once again, a dealership is supposed to have the best techs to tackle these difficult electrical problems. Yet as usual they are lazy and only want to play with their fancy flash programmers. Eric O took his time, isolated the issue, and found the obvious problem. I never get tired of seeing true quality diagnostics by SMA. This channel should have over 1,000,000 subscribers! Great job Eric O.

Eric.... I feel for you.... I have had some kind of Respiratory Infection for the last 30 days or so too.... Knocks the "get-up-and-go" out of you. Good call on the direction to go, and I too expected a corroded connector but.... SURPRISE!!! There was a saying.... Sylvester??? "I HATE MEECES TO PIECES!" I had them in my Travel Trailer last year and what a "stinking mess!" It took me a month to find and repair all the damage. The REALLY FRUSTRATING THING was that they ate ALL the insulation off a 10 inch piece of energized 120 Volt Loomex cable without a FATAL SHORT CIRCUIT. No Justice! Get better and keep up the good work. And remember...... If you can do it........ a Dealer COULD do it, but.... they don't have the drive and, they would prefer to sell you a new one.

Used to have my own repair shop years ago, had a customer come in with a Cadillac cts with electrical issues , while diagnosing removed two full plastic grocery store bags of mouse nesting material. After repairing a multitude of chewed up wiring , she informed me that she couldn't possibly have mouse damage because she lived in an upscale neighborhood !

This tells me the Mechanics at the dealership are relying on their equipment, not their eyes. Working on ANY vehicle is more than just plugging in a machine and reading codes or voltages. If the voltage is not at the proper level, or the issue dictates finding the issue as far as why a signal wire is not working properly. I have found nests in all kinds of vehicles over the years, and in dumb places. I once had a snowmobile backfire in my shop and it blew acorns all over the shop because a chipmunk had stuffed the ecaust full of acorns. I also found the nest in the airbox in the snowmobile stored next to that one. I found a mouse nest in the fresh air box in the glove box behind the cabin filter. The dealer had marked on the inspection that the cabin filter had been replaced, yeah sure buddy! There's your problem lady! I always check airboxes, filter boxes and cabin filters now,as well as fuse boxes,ESPECIALLY FUSE BOXES. Especially if the vehicle has sat for a while.

I haven't found any threads in forums covering how to isolate the wiring, everything just says replace the encoder motor, test the switch at the dash, etc, etc, etc. My issue turned out to be the EXACT same thing, so lucky-ish for me, but man, I just didn't know where to look for those wires at the connector next to the fuse block. I will definitely be donating soon. The few times I do get sick or congested, I use the neti pot with 2 or 3 drops of essential oil, like eucalyptus or rosemary, etc. It just helps with any pain and heals much quicker. I also use the pot when doing nasty jobs just to thoroughly clear out my nose & cavities, like when working high dust/dirt, even with a mask isn't 100%

So let me get this straight. Eric O, even when sick, stuffy sinus, thoughts hazy feeling like sh*t, finds and fixes something two other shops (one a dealer) couldn't. My god, GM ought revoke that dealers privileges.. or at minimum give the customer money back. Amazing. Kudos again Mr O.

Like I say, our local dealer is a joke. This obviously should have been a walk in the park for them. After all I used their tool and their info to fix it :)

Terrible that you don't get the credit for the fix from the customer. It's not like you don't deserve it.

Wow! Great video, thanks so much! I'm willing to bet I'll find something similar to this on my Suburban when I look at it again tonight. It sat without being driven for 19 months and there is evidence that mice have visited. All of the 4WD button lights are on along with the CHECK 4WD message. I wouldn't be surprised to find a similar pile of mouse mulch in the same area.

I really wish I had a scan tool that could do all those diagnostic tests! Maybe someday... In the meantime I'm fortunate that here in Lincoln, Ne. there is a good automotive electrical shop that can do all that stuff. Good job finding that wire! I've had sinus infections before, no fun AT ALL!!
