This was a great walk-through. I jotted down all the steps described in the video. It helped to have step-by-step reminders of the tasks: 1. Unscrew and remove two cargo net retainers located on the rear hatch threshold and one cargo net retainer on the upper rear edge of the large interior panel 2. Remove rear hatch threshold by pulling forward at bottom then up from top 3. Remove cover at base of 3rd row seat belt attachment point 4. Remove 3rd row seat belt bolt at floor (14mm) 5. Remove sliding door threshold by lifting up along inner edge 6. Unbolt 2nd row seat belt at lower attachment point (14mm) 7. Remove cover located at top attachment point of middle row seat belt 8. Remove exposed seat belt bolt at top attachment point of middle row seat belt 9. Loosen rubber door gasket top to bottom along rear vertical edge of sliding doorway 10. Pull forward on bottom of C-pillar upper trip piece 11. Pull large trip panel away (the one that stretches from sliding door to hatch and window to floor) 12. Remove white flexible plastic cover by using utility knife to cut black gasket material 13. Remove speaker (3 X 8mm bolts and unclip electrical connector) 14. Remove 2nd row seat belt mount (1 x 10mm and 1 x 14mm) 15. Remove flexible plastic insert under 2nd row seat belt mount 16. Remove tail light (remove 2 covers, then 2 screws, then pull towards rear of vehicle) 17. Open sliding door ¾ open 18. Remove outside sliding door cover (remove rear 10mm and front Phillips screw) 19. Use a cloth covered jack stand to support the sliding door about 6 inches from the rear 20. Loosen and remove 2 x 14mm bolts that secure the center roller to the door 21. Lift the center roller and pull away from the van 22. Remove the cable ends from the center roller 23. Remove lower rear air duct 24. Remove upper rear air duct (push center pin up to collapse fastener) 25. Remove 3 x 10mm bolts securing rear HVAC unit 26. Remove 2 x 10mm bolts securing module located on D-pillar (in the way of HVAC) 27. Pull HVAC away from wall (note drain at bottom of HVAC) 28. Remove hard plastic cover behind HVAC unit 29. Remove 3 nuts (10mm) on rear sliding door cable mount 30. Release cable retainer on rear section of sliding door cable 31. Remove 4 nuts (10mm) on front sliding door cable mount 32. Release cable retainer on front section of sliding door cable 33. Unscrew 2 phillips screws holding sliding door motor controller 34. Pull sliding door motor controller inwards 35. Loosen but do not remove upper 2 bolts (10mm) on top edge of sliding door motor 36. Loosen and remove bolt (10mm) on bottom edge of sliding door motor 37. Unhook two 2 electrical connectors 38. Remove sliding door motor and all old cabling Reverse these instructions to install new motor. Once you have installed the new motor and attached the new cables to the center roller (you’re back up to step 19), be sure to slide the two white pieces on the new motor downwards to the lock position. This tightens the cable to the motor and if you don’t do this it won’t work. This is also the right time to verify the new motor works before continuing with reassembly. Also note that you can also replace the center roller with a new one if needed for no extra labor.

My kid just got his license and backed into the garage wall with the side door open. This video was helpful for helping me fix it. I was a certified foreign car mechanic in the late 1970's. I then worked in a factory for 37 years but learned fuel injection and other things as needed for my cars. I really enjoy your videos as it shows me what is involved in cars that I never worked on. It has also taught me the cars I never want to own and how to work on the ones I would. I like Mrs. O too!

If you do a lot of those heavy van doors, take one of those cheap screw jacks that have a groove that hooks in a body flange to raise the wheel that come with cars and put it on a small furniture dolly. You can screw it to the dolly or leave it loose to put boards under for more height. You can move the door around and raise and lower it easy. Pad the groove with a piece of inner tube so you don't scratch the bottom of the door. Helps lining up regular doors too.

Great job. Honda today told me $1600 to fix. Was $1200 in 2016. I really appreciate the video and the humor. Thank you for taking the time to make a video!!!

In my case I did not cut my cables but my autistic son forced open the door to jump out while we were driving in the parking lot. He was unharmed but the cables were screwed up inside the unit. So I just finished this project myself last night after three days of fun and laughter. Only I changed the cable inside the motor. Which is harder. If you can swing a new motor assembly, do it. If you can swing paying someone else to do the whole thing, do that. But if you're crazy enough to have at it, this video is invaluable. Thanks, Eric.

Did this switch on my 2009 Odyssey today. This video is all you need. I did the left side, so didn't have to worry about the HVAC unit. The trickiest part was aligning the door roller at the end. A little patience, and all is good to go. Thanks Eric for your great videos. You provide a tremendous service.

Watching Honda repair vids and having done a few over the years I have been pretty impressed at how most of the time they are fairly easy to work on, good engineering. It also makes me look back and think WTF was I thinking working at a Ford dealer for 3 years!

This was a great video. I had a 2003 honda odyssey with 202000 miles with the same problem. I also cut the cables. I had 4 kids with no way other than having them climb over the front seats or go through the back tailgate. I wish that someone would have made a video that was as good as this one. I am now a subscriber.

You know Eric, I had to watch your video 3 times before I saw it to the end. Our shop has been going full speed for a week now and this old fart is extremely tired. Today I said screw it and left early. I can only repeat myself when I say that the video was excellent as usual. I'm not a fan of repairing doors, locks and interior work but you made it look like child's play. keep em coming when you can. I see some of your viewers commenting on others on Y-Tube. They all have their own personalities and strengths. ETCG was the pioneer of auto repair videos to help others and he's still helping others the best way he can. We all need to support these people who take the time from their busy lives to help others and to entertain us. I guess, enough said.

2006 Odyssey passenger sliding door beeps when in drive. However, instrument panel open door indicator shows it closed. Dome light not on as typical when a door is open. My battery is dead each morning even after new battery. Battery and charging system tested in good working order. My local dealer said battery was going dead because the latch is bad, and therefore even though the engine is off the door motor keeps trying to finish latching, even though I can't hear the door motor running. Humm? They also said door doesn't open all the way sometimes and it doesn't move smoothly. The dealer wanted over $1,400 just in labor to replace the door motor, roller and latch. When I complained about the price they lowered the labor to $900. I was still suspicious of this price and felt that for an experience dealer mechanic with all the right tools, that it was only a few hours work worst case. You proved me right! I found the parts for $200 cheaper online and will replace them myself some upcoming Saturday. Nice video quality and angles considering that you're doing this all by yourself. You articulate well. Thank you!

Thanks for the video. I know at one point you said you wish you hadn't started it but I'm glad you did and finished too. It is a lot of work not as difficult as most people think just very time consuming. I did this with my 13 year old daughter, great father and daughter bonding time. I actually took the motor apart and replaced the cabling because the motor was fine just the rear cable broke because one of the rollers on roller assembly broke off. It was considerably cheaper but much more time consuming. Believe me if you have the cash buy a replacement motor, much easier. Thanks again for posting these Eric!!! Great job!!

Great video. I have a 2003, so mine will be a little different. I also cut my cable out of necessity so I could get my door closed. It was just hanging down. The door worked great as an unpowered door for a couple of months and then the rollers finally gave out. This repair is in my future and your video should help me yank the needed parts from the local boneyard. Your narration was like watching a friend do the repair and was very helpful

Great job Eric and thank you for another excellent video! I was an autobody repairman in eastern Canada during my younger days and I used to cringe when I had to work on vans with rotted out sliding doors. It was a lot of work to get them patched up and working properly.

Just wanted to say thanks Your video helped me replace my car motor " odyssey 2006" without any problems and as you did it exactly. It took me nearly 1:30 hours to complete the job and saved me a lot of money, I bought the motor for CAD$ 75 "used" and that's it, at Honda dealership they asked for $850 You are amazing 👍🏻👍🏻

Recently put in a new/used roof mount antenna on my Hyundai Santa Fe,never did a job like that before,got it all installed,and put back together only to find it was sitting a tiny bit crooked due to the rubber gasket not being seated all the way,it doesn't leak mind you,but it bugs me after all that work i neglected to check the gasket before putting it on the roof,then again after tightening it from the bottom...this video taught me a valuable lesson in checking your work as you go as to not overlook anything,the radio works great and it doesn't leak so it's good enough,cause i'm not taking that apart again,lol

Great video! Our 2007 Odyssey right sliding door rear cable had snapped. I ended up changing the door motor assembly in the parkway in a little over 2 hours after watching your comprehensive video. I used Honda parts (motor assy $280 and roller bracket $45 plus tax). Thank You!

Excellent video Éric! I had a door that would open with difficulty on my wife’s ‘06 Odyssey. I purchased a new motor (over 300 dollars) and after watching your video attempted at a replacement. After a couple of hours everything went well and went back together. The door works but it didn’t solve the problem! It was the door actuator inside the door itself! $56 bucks brand new online. I replaced that in about an hour and the door works perfectly. Oh well, I live and learn. Now I have my original door motor that I don’t need but still works. Maybe I can sell it on eBay and get something for it. I don’t feel like putting it back in the van.

Ya, I popped out the door hinge pin with vice grips instead of unbolting the hinge as shown, and I didn't have to realign the door. THANKS! Awesome job!

Just needed to find out where the plastic pins are and how to get to them. Tried a short cut today, but wasn't able to get the panel with the vertical flip cover door off. Doesn't look like I'd have had enough room to make that work.

Our van is currently in the shop for a sliding door issue, but ours had a 'SLIDE DOOR' warning light on the dash. We were told it needed a new control module. Then a few days later we were told it needed a new motor on the drivers side door. Seems like they might just be throwing parts at it. I wish I had found this video before I took it to the shop. I could have thrown parts at it and saved me a bunch of labor costs.

Nicely done. Allot of mechanics pull apart interiors, not allot leave them in the same condition when they are finished. Good to see a tradesman who takes pride in his work.( Think I know why the bag was open, previous mech was half way through and gave up, ha ha).

I wish I had known that night how to get the cable off of the door hinge, because I had to drive it home with the door open! Yes, it was an adventure. Hi Eric! Just a little tip for you on those push pin type retainers. I find it easier to just pull the pin out from the backside and just reinstall the clip and put the pin back in instead of trying to shove it back up into and out of the top of the clip part . One thing i have problems with id the ones Chrysler uses for there trim they are very fragile and like to break. like you said Hondas plastic is very pliable and durable . All that time, effort and $$$ to fix a freaking power door assist? Sometimes convenience comes at a very steep price...more frills, more failure! Nothing wrong with good ol' fashioned hinges and a pull handle :) Nice fix as always Eric, top notch.

I know it's been 5 years but, this video helps me a lot! I probably won't do this myself but if my mechanic watches this, it could save him time knowing what to do instead of guessing at some things. I am amazed how quickly you moved, considering that you had to change camera positions and how quickly you found all of the fasteners. I think this was probably not your first door motor. Do these things give warning before they go? Mine just went out. I went to open it and pffft, nothing. Not even a pffft. When I could do this stuff, I'd check safety switches checking for power at the motor first. I don't want to buy a motor if a connector is loose or if I can put grease in there to improve the connection. I cannot think of the name of that grease... Anyway, maybe someday you could make a troubleshooting video unless you've already made one!
