Southport's abandoned parks! What happened and where did they go? I explore the old Kew Park and also take a look at Sands Park in Ainsdale! I check out where the old Southport lido used to be. I take a walk around one of England's most interesting and historic seaside towns.
Southport is a seaside town in the Metropolitan Borough of Sefton in Merseyside, England. At the 2021 census, it had a population of 94,421, making it the eleventh most populous settlement in North West England.
Southport lies on the Irish Sea coast and is fringed to the north by the Ribble estuary. The town is 17 miles (27 km) north of Liverpool and 15 miles (24 km) southwest of Preston.
Southport is one of the nicest places in UK. It is quiet, peaceful and beautiful, from the seaside, marine lake, theme park, famous shopping aracades, sand dunes, forests, Victorian streets and much more, there is plenty to see and do. Festivals and events are running all year round such as the Jazz Festival, the Flower Show, the Air Show, the Golf Grand Open.

Fascinates me that there was Kew gardens, with buildings, including a zoo/aquarium. Things built like that so long ago, far from the town centre. There were less people, and the town was smaller. Somehow buildings destroyed by fire, similar to the Winter Gardens, on the prom.

2:18 No canal in Southport. It's the Three Pools Waterway, but is really a watercourse. Or it's one of the brooks, Boundary, I think. Also 2 others, the Sluice and Crossens River.

Those ‘car parks’ used to be a Park and Ride scheme. There was another on the Esplanade by the Eco Centre on the front.

@@andrewemmerson No worries. I learnt quite a few bits from your video i didn’t know, so thank you! The Kew one, if i remember correctly was hardly used. I suppose the cost of maintaining/securing the site added to the buses running cost probably rendered it unviable.

Yes the town lane park used to be the tip those trees and paths were fairly new and used to walk round there around 10 years ago with the dog ,the plants etc were much much smaller then ,enjoying the videos .

@@andrewemmerson Yes weather it was park before the tip I don't know ,the tip was there in 70s 80s .Also at Banks there used to be a huge hospital with a listed huge manor type building ,it burnt down maybe 90s ,its now a massive housing area ,there was a landmark water tower recently flattened for building ,the old railway to Preston is like a path now there are some bits of the old station in the ground ,might be worth a wander may make a good video , the village itself was an old fishing and produce place ,there's many impressive banks around it that stop it flooding .

@@andrewemmerson Yes search "Greaves hall mansion " /hospital , there was a siren used to go off if there was any escaped patients or a fire ,it sounded like a WW siren used to hear it mikes away . The mansion was like a Tudor black white building was very impressive sadly fire finished it ,then it was flattened , ! There is also a ghost on Ralph's wife lane another famous locally story .

@@andrewemmerson You definitely need someone to assist your research (I know have said it before, sorry Andrew) as you appear to be learning and guessing much, plus folks memories sometimes play tricks! Cannot understand why you don't say the 'pond' as you call it is in the SDGH grounds, that pond is part of Kew Woods and the field you were on is not! That looked incredibly like Meols Park. Tip wasn't at B&Q but at roughly the second roundabout as you pass the old Isle of Wight farm, turn right there. I presume you are talking of Johnsons old car tip - maybe not? The main coastal road was also used as a tip for all rubbish, that is what it was built on, our rubbish!

Land you ended up at, the hospital area, is reclaimed old tip Princess Park, (the old Lido) unfortunately has a very gruesome and tragic, recent past

Love ur vids u should make more on the history and architecture of Southport not lived here long but love living here it’s a shame all the history is lost :/
