Southwest Florida shelling, frankly even on the worst shelling beach we have is still a great way to spend a couple of hours. Today I went to Bunche to clean up garbage and see if I could possibly score a wentletrap.

Well, we woke up to a Winter Wonderland this morning here in Ontario, Canada. I always look forward to my beach fix every Sunday, as you welcome us along on your adventures. So nice to hear that enthusiasm back in your voice Sharmon. It reassures me that healing is indeed taking place. I was oohing and awhing over that delicate, little hinged Rose Tellin. It was a really different mix of things on this beach walk, which was awesome! Here in Canada we were heartbroken to see the damage that hurricane Ian wrought on Florida. Many prayers went up, and continue to do so for everyone rebuilding their lives there. Kudos to you for doing your part every beach adventure in collecting the garbage that you collect to help beautify your beloved beaches. Thank you for the links to send our financial support. You are amazing.

The Gulf Coast of Florida, is my very favourite place to visit. I’ve spent many holidays on your beaches over the years, and it was such a healing place to visit. When the hurricane hit and did so much damage, it broke my heart. My heart aches for all the Floridians that have been affected. Thank you so very much for giving us legitimate ways that we can contribute to the needs of the area. I also admire you for auctioning items to help raise money, and for contributing to the clean up. As I saw Ian unfold, my prayers were with all those affected. Unfortunately I didn’t find your channel in time to bid on the shells you put up for auction, but I will contribute to the links you’ve provided. If all of us that have enjoyed your beaches, contribute, we can make SW Florida beautiful again.

This warms my heart. When I was ther the second week of November there was so so much more garbage on the beach. The first time I went the big refrigerator unit was not there but 3 days later it had washed up. Glad they got it out. It is really coming along. I wish I was down there to help clean up.

While I was “googling” shelling after hurricane Ian, I came across your video. What a sweet reprieve from the dreary and cold Chicago winter. Bless you for cleaning up the beaches! My heart absolutely breaks for all those affected by the hurricane. Such devastation😪- my heart belongs to the beautiful state of Florida and all it’s wonderful people. I will continue to spend my vacations in Southwest Florida- no matter what- not a more beautiful place in my opinion❤️- my heart and prayers remain with you all🙏

Hello Beach Angel! So glad to hear your smiling voice tonight! Bunche Beach is always fun, so this should be interesting. At least the water is clear and calm. Okay, that Tusk Shell is so cool! Congrats on that find, sharp eyes! Like the hinged Rose Tellin, too. Seeing all the building materials, not to mention the house and the roof, makes me remember past beach walks to remove debris. The coolest thing we found was an antique whiskey bottle, a buoy and a boat. We helped one couple who were sitting the sand with window screens, hoping to find anything worth saving from their home. It's good to spend the day at the beach with you. It's been grey and dreary all day here. We're supposed to have our first snow over the coming weekend. I'm still not allowed outside, so I'll watch the snow fall. I've been crocheting a lot, getting a couple of baby blankets and a shawl done so far. I'm trying to get another shawl finished by Christmas. Then it's back to making toboggan hats for the street people. Oh, your air plant shell combination is so pretty! That horse conch is quite pretty, even if it isn't so pretty. I'm feeling sorta beat up lately myself! I'm recovering from two rounds of bronchitis and a urinary tract infection, which added insult to injury, but I'll survive. The doctors all say that I'm on the right track and should try to be patient. Thanks for the great explore, dear Beach Angel. Just knowing that Sunday is coming gives me a little rush of joy, almost like the thrill of heading south down I-75. Perhaps I'll be making that trip before too long. Until then, I'm sending love to you and prayers for all of you who were touched by Ian's wrath. Becca

Darn those elusive Wendle traps! I know you’re going to find a bunch one of these days. Thank you again for the great beach walk.. I personally think the giant lightening welk is STUNNING in white, like honed white marble. And just let me comment on your giant horse conch. I love everything about them. The pitting, the barnacles, the color, the weathering. It all tell the story of the life that lived with it in. That creature lived a long time to create that giant shell. Imagine the stories it could tell. The conchs that are up for auction are beautiful, I agree let the winners decide how much or what they’d like to do with them. I’d like mine with extra barnacles please…😊 because character counts, and every shell has gone through its own journey before it found its way to your hands.

I’m really happy the mangrove survived! I wanted to get a bucket and start building up the sand. A dump truck would be more appropriate, then I could load some of the parts of the buildings that were destroyed. It’s my fantasy to be super strong. As it is my walker would get bogged down in the sand. I found it fascinating that new species are turning up. We’re they always there but overlooked? Thank you Sharmon for your weekly updates. There’s still so much beauty to be found. I missed the jingle in your round up. They are so beautiful. Bye for this week from Ontario Canada 🇨🇦❤️🇨🇦

Hi Sharmon, What a great beach walk! Finding beautiful new shells (for me, they were new) and cleaning up both beaches as well. That part of Fort Myers Beach I don't spend much time on. It's always been that wide 😃 The island is about 7-8 miles long and we have mostly spend our time on the South end of the island. The clean up was on the North end. It was still special to find a few shells so we'll probably be back to see what we can find up there!

Love those boring turretsnails! I find them up here too. Also have the ladders. After you weigh the garbage, maybe you can make something cool with the glass. I have a story about white moon snails. The other day I was almost back to the jetties at Honeymoon and looked down and saw the most beautiful glossy white moon snails! Then another! When I picked them up, I saw there was GLUE on them! Bummer! The things people throw on the beach!😂 Love the Morton's cockles! I'm sure you had very mixed emotions going back to FMB. Happy to see you're getting to help. I just love your commentary!! You referred to the “coffee grounds” to finding Wentletraps. How come? What’s the correlation? Also, thank you, THANK YOU for mentioning the dunes and grasses. I live on Lake Michigan, West Michigan side, and over the past few years we have had super high water levels. Between the harsh winters and the lake being froze over, it had left quite a bit of extra inches of water. As a result, our dunes have suffered greatly. The erosion was crazy. Not anything compared to what devastation was left behind from a hurricane, but we’re left with super steep cliff’s, tree, (and a few houses), that have just fallen off and into the lake. There’s multiple signs saying “please stay off the dunes”, “dunes and beaches closed due to erosion”. I don’t know if people think that that means a challenge to climb them or what? But drives us beach obeying, goer’s, just crazy frustrated!! Thankfully, last year our water levels have started to recede, leaving more beaches to play, walk, beach glass and rock hunt!! 😉 Thank you again!!

@joeisreallife7729
@joeisreallife7729 Жыл бұрын
@@SWFBeachLife Well I don't like to compare the two Ian brought a large surge with 15.5ft max water line over a large area while Andrew brought massive wind speeds and even higher bursts of winds while being relatively compact (as well as a large but localized surge) which led to the changing of building codes across all Florida. Both became kings of their respective north Atlantic hurricane seasons and Ian is going to make it's mark on flood insurance and building codes. I would've never thought my house and my city of Cape Coral could be flooded to such a massive degree. It really puts in perspective how truly myopic it was to develop areas of mangroves and barrier islands like Ft. Myers Beach which would've reduced storm surge on our coast. I doubt I will ever experience anything like Ian again unless I go hurricane chasing in a full on category 5.

What's up Sharmon! Thank u for sharing the beach with us. I love ur positivity, n a shining light. Too bad everyone isn't as concerned about picking up garbage/debris on the beach n the streets as u are. I feel the State/Government should have some large dumpsters n help sent there to assist with the clean-up, n haul off most of the debris outside the homes, businesses, n beaches. People that have no other option, but to stay/live there, n see the destruction daily, no way to clean up, have to be feeling overwhelmed/depressed, n alone. It would at least lighten there load. I live in Cali, they have Cal-Trans clean up garbage along the freeways/streets. (Not enough) but every little bit helps. I apologize for carrying on, I went thru a flood 30+ years ago n I still feel the affects from it. (PTSD) n Depression. Hurricane Ian was even more destructive. Breaks my heart thinking about it. I pray the Lord gives Y'all the strength, drive, n patients to recover n restore ur lives.

A friend just told me about your site. It's fun for me because my family wintered in North Fort Myers for years. I would go down for about a month each winter. Walked all these beaches at one time or another and have found most of these shells.

Still so heartbreaking to see the evidence and a tually imagine what we cant see.. thank you for being there to show us the true situation there..your generosity in helping clean up makes a difference.. so curios what in bunche makes the shells color this way? I love the egg cockle pairs how pretty.. and the tusk shell.. even small treasures are treasure!

Bree from Beachgirl Studio thinks it might be extra limestone in the sand which is bleaching the shells out so much. It certainly makes sense! The devastation is awful but I can't help but thinking it gets just a little bit better each day. PS - the yellow of those Morton egg cockles can be quite awesome!

Great walk. The tusk shell was awesome! My heart goes out to all of those still so severely affected. Have you looked into why the shells on Bunche are so discolored? It would be fascinating to do a study on it. Thanks for the beach time too. It’s cold in Michigan!

A rather smart gal suggested there is extra limestone in the sand, which is good for making concrete, but not so good for shell color. I believe that is what is bleaching the shells out!

Another great video. Thank you for showing the good and the bad. It is heartwarming to see people coming together to restore the beaches and, although it takes time, SW Florida is healing from the hurricane. I was wondering, however, if you have ever tried to use acid to remove the beige coloring from shells from Bunche Beach?
@SWFBeachLife
@SWFBeachLife Жыл бұрын
I have, and it doesn't work. The color is actually stripped from the shells, versus having a layer of calcium that needs to be removed. 😃

Exciting to see progress in beach cleanup. No matter how big or small it’s a step to the new horizon. I forgot it was Sunday unless this came on my radar. I also saw my name for the first time. 🫢I always pick a small project to work on or contribute to somebody else’s project. You were my first shelling account I starting watching. I love your video content of course all the beautiful shells but also the geographic layout of these beaches that you include. I now have a better picture of the beaches and where some of the islands are located. I like to rewatch old clips of beaches that have changed drastically. They will be back better than ever. Take care and take my name off. 😅

It just occurred to me because you are helping pick up beach debris from that storm- that many of us will walk past a piece of trash on the sidewalk or street where we live or shop just out of being in a hurry and carelessness, or not caring at all! Why does it take a special organized effort by a group of volunteers specifically focused on doing what we should all do, all the time, anyhow? I have seen groups along the roads bagging trash; I have seen overflowing trash bins at public places; have we become so jaded that we can't even imagine making beautiful places beautiful again by being part of the solution instead of part of the problem? I know your followers are like you by their comments. I hope more people can find it in their hearts to care about their surroundings, and be part of the solution!

You’re at our beach… well, what was our part of the beach that we were always at. I miss it so much. 🥺😢 The neighbors that bought my grandparents’ house are selling the property (well, the land really). So some property investor will come in and build who knows what. I hear that’s happening all over the island. I’m heartbroken. That end scene where you were talking about walking down the street… that was where the Liki Tiki bar was wasn’t it. 😭
