That would be interesting x3 and yeah a best of 3 in 3 environments is also my idea too of a fair PvP setup for tournaments and stuff, since it would test the ship in all environments - space, planets and moons

Pft, you all see these op ships made for combat, but the problem is that each server has its own meta with its own rules and each player has each own millitary doctrine. My personal way of going about making a combat ship is make it so nice looking that the guy shooting at it feels bad about destroying such a nice ship, It work 100% of the time 50% of the time.

@@LucaTheGuide I remember playing in a server without "rules", asked admin on at the time if they were good with cheese drives (clang engines) they were cool "if you can make it you can use it", safe to say with a little tomfoolery involving a mod's giga megacruiser and a 6dof clangdrive ship with clang cannon (thank you major jon) the server quickly introduced rules and I was now banned on a dwindling list of servers within my region

I haven't even played on any server yet and this is something I've already considered, since I'm looking at vanilla SE and wanting to mod it. Making ships is fun and all, however every environment will be different. Look at GetBrocked's Outlands series. They have their own carefully crafted meta for combat that is amazing and makes for great fights, and is exactly what you're talking about. That's their community's thing and it works for them. The SE community is an oddly competitive one for a game that's about creativity. One idea can change an entire server because now it's the "Best thing", until the next best thing comes along, and on, and on. Some servers are creative mode and if you want to joust that's cool. Others are RP servers and very involved with a lot of investment. Other's are arms race servers where everyone's trying to one up the other with the best thing to top best things and the person in question in the video likely comes from that mindset. I'd like to play SE a particular way but that's that way I like it, and I may have to mod for it. It may not jive with others and that's okay. We can all enjoy SE in our own way.

@@maverickjsmith8795 SE is a lot like Minecraft but you can crash your ship, and just like minecraft, you have the PvP sweatlords, the RPers and the Builders, however, since SE's community is so much smaller, you have all of them be much closer to each other, so clashes between them are quite frequent.

@@Fixti0n I think anything creative with an amount of effort will have investment. I'm ~65 hours into SE and still on my first survival playthrough becuase I've been rather unlucky with resources and I'm doing this all for the first time. I have two vehicles I've made, one a rover, another a flying miner. They both have names and both have had troubles, but none more than the miner which started powered by atmospheric thrusters, crashed, had to be torn down and rebuilt at my base, rebuilt with hydrogen thrusters, and learning alllll about hydrogen thrusters the hard way. That miner I adore because of the effort required to learn how to make it perform the job I want it to. It's solid little miner flying around in 1.1g. And if someone talked bad about it I'd be the tiniest bit offput. An eyebrow raise at most. But only because of the amount of effort I've put into it. I can understand people putting hours and hours into a ship. I've made one now in creative to learn how to just make a functional ship and the second one is still going hours later because sorting out all the systems and conveyors is a skill while still getting it at least *kinda* what you wanted it to look like is a journey on it's own. Some people will find it a point of pride to say "Yeah I made that!" Other's will guard it furiously for fear of feeling invalidated for some reason. And other's still will seemingly have their entire self-worth in a bunch of data in a game. Those are your sweatlords. They're going to be in every community. I can't imagine what SE forums for some servers look like. Probably a good read over coffee.

safe to say on paper effectiveness versus in practice effectiveness never line up entirely, especially when the designer has no experience within the field. survivability is an onion ; see and respond to threat first, don't be seen by threat, don't get hit, don't get penetrated etc. when the only testing done in inaccurate conditions it's easy to poke holes that don't exist in a design.

Both of these ships were used in survival the only difference is my ship is made for factions where not everyone needs to invest pcu into production.

Not gonna lie, while it's certainly better to take the high road when confronted with toxicity, I would be sincerely amused by a bunch of people challenging that dude to duels, and then every last one of them fields a ship Luca designed.

I will say this, having good forward lines of fire is preferable for two reasons - one, it means that you can just track your target head-on at all times rather than having to turn to let your turrets get a line of sight, and two, it means you don't have to expose a lateral profile to fire your weapons. But that being said, while it is beneficial, it's not the end-all, be-all of combat. A lot of vanilla SE combat takes place at the edge of weapons range, where it's very easy to dodge artillery turret fire. At that range your main source of firepower is going to be your frontal railgun batteries, with the turrets only really coming into play if someone decides to close the distance. You can get away with "suboptimal" turret placement if you design your ship well enough in other ways.

I'm surprised I don't see more decoy torpedoes on combat ships. Completely changes the effectiveness of automatic turrets.

PCU cost is the main thing. You don't want to have a bunch of extra grids. But on a server with higher PCU limits it's definitely a viable strategy.

Tbh in my experience the curve of armor usage and player experience in pvp is inverse. I found that more experienced players put emphasis more on offensive capability instead of defensive as they dont need that much armor because they are good at dodging. Its rly shown in Luca's battlecruiser as u can see most of the spaces filled with light armor and a hell lot of hard hitting guns. You wont die if you can't be hit. I respect your skill, luca the e-foxgirl! Also yeah one bad thing in SE in my opinion is that beauty is the last thing you would pay attention to because the american wild west way works best in this game= if you have a problem that you cant solve, bring MORE GUNS.

Luca, i miss how detailed your content used to be, back when you mainly spoke with text only in your videos (just to show how long ago it was). when you started talking more, i got exited because, i have dyslexia lol so it made it way more enjoyable for me, but the detailed content explaining things like turret placement, useful angling with ship design with the best things to use on the inside walls and why, combat tactics in different situations, ect sort of stopped. i mean, yes, this contemt is good too, but i really loved the detailed info from back then. Luca, i still have some of your old videos in my space engineers tutorials playlist ffs.. it was really good stuff

Whole reason I ONLY play single player or with personal friends, and we only play pve and with modded weapons on large rather impractical high pcu ships covered in guns. It also helps having repair projectors and welders in key areas not just keeping guns alive. Great thing about SE is its a sandbox and you can build and do just about anything you want and in your world you can always be right.

I made it into a Luca video my life is now complete lol. All jokes I have questions about PVP in SE. Why do people use rail guns when they force you to need more power generation in top of having a long reload and more expensive ammo than artillery guns, Is it the power of them or the speed that shells fly? Also, what is a good PCU limit to stay under for low-cost combat ships?

My personal view is If they punch a hole through a critical component, especially a hydrogen tank in the newer updates that add explosion, you could disable an entire ship in one to two shots. Also turning the enemy into swiss cheese guarantees they are going to lose *something*. Luca might have other reasons but mine are just "big hole where not supposed to be, is bad.

The main issue I get with huge ships is power generation. Finding enough u235 is a problem not easy to solve outside of creative. Single player you can get away with things like space elevators, automated mining and building shipyards or self welding ship designs. Multiplayer server limits rules against huge ships but one on one huge ships in single player are lol powerful. Smaller ship designs fall to the tactic of building large grid ships that ram into the other ship. You use gryo's as shrapnel, with internal warheads projected by said gryos. With a drill block at the front because they are very hard to destroy. With the right design it will take out small ships one hit or do massive damage to bigger ships. Huge ships it just damages the outer hull. With the huge ships, armour like a heavy block, drill block and heavy block will stop almost any ramming ship dead. Making the hull is a pain, you can make it modular and project the armour sections and use welding blocks to create the hull. There is no other way I have found outside of creative for getting it done. A welding ship is insanely slow, using a shipyard to print sections and merge block them together takes forever. Having them self welding works better up to the point welding bugs out. There is just more fun with smaller ships and you dont care about them being damaged or destroyed. They can jump longer distances, cost reasonable resources and can land on planets. With huge ships it can take a day to mine ice and produce enough hydrogen to fuel them to full. It takes weeks for all the resources. Its a lesser project than a space elevator which does not need creative but it takes so long to do the hard way. There is more fun to be had with more disposable designs. Spending a few months building and designing a huge ship. When you could have been doing something mor fun ingame. Creative mode you can create a space elevator and a truely huge massive ship within a day in single player.

@@LucaTheGuide Gravity drives eat lots of power but give the best acceleration. Also the bigger the ships mass, the more jump drives you need. If you max out the power draw recharging the jump drives the ship is disabled. Also you can't jump as far as a smaller design. Really huge ships (400Mkg of higher) can bug out, the ammo wont be tranfered to the guns, they won't fire when they have ammo etc. This is not a problem in single player but in multiplayer I would guess a server restart would be required. The game also performs better if you stay within limits as well. A space elevator can cause fps issues, so can two huge ships firing. Scripts can cause pauses as well. Also lots of custom AI turrets will bug out as well and stop working. The AI stops working but the normal gatling turrets work fine. In multiplayer these issues require limits based on the servers performance. Thus huge ships are fun and OP but are just big problems if they are designed poorly. Better off with smaller ships (still can be big within but not huge) if you like pvp combat more and not spending forever mining and waiting around. Working around problems with the game limits. A huge ship with lots of vast amounts of welders and conveyors will both not work correctly and lag like crazy. You are not wrong, many ships in the workshop look good/great but perform poorly under fire. Sorry for the wall of test. TLDR: Yeah I think you are mostly correct.

I have an equivalent to your Cruiser design on Modio. The fbn-Heavy Cruiser has a lot of features you like including a ladder, gravel ejector & production+ 2L rail guns, 18 artillery turret & 16 auto cannons at 17454 PCU.

I like making my ships look flashy. It costs a lot of PCU at times, and I know how some feel about that. I also love sub grids. Everybody has their ideas on what a "perfect" ship is, but the thing to remember is a ship build is made based on certain situations. Many players do many different things with their ships. Taking a focused PVP ship to do trade at the moon or a drill ship to ambush an enemy just seems pointless. You cant always know the exact circumstances lead to the ship being designed the way it is. So ask rather than judge unless you are asked to judge I say. Constructive criticism can go a long way. Much farther that "ur ship lame af"

I love your vids and I've played the game for a very long time. I use to just do some creative 1v1 brawls with a friend post warfare2 buy in the the new combat system I've been learning the new complex systems in the game and thx to your vids I thing I have come up with some ship designs that could hopefully go toe to toe with yours. ;) p.s the big take away from my research is that the more complex something is the likeliness of it becomes a peace of scrap is higher. and I would love to duel you at some point

Lately alot of my ships I do I put through a live fire test. Alot of the times it's just to see if it can survive a Salvo since that's all I need it to. The defense onion applies to space engineers as well as it does in real life so dodging hits is way more important in than tanking hits specially in survival where any damage you have to repair yourself and getting inside to find floaters and where it got damaged can be super tedious.

This extra confirms my theory of this community being incredibly toxic both towards the devs and other players. Everybody acts as if they know whats best for the game or how their way of building is the most effective.

I agree to disagree, there are many, many people who are actually pretty kind and willing to even help people do better and willing to listen to other people trying to help them, there's just a portion of people who are toxic, which is unfortunately pretty common no matter what game you play, it's just that since this is a smaller game with a smaller fanbase the toxic people seem more prominent, but on the actual servers (both discord and in game servers) most people are pretty cool!

I dunno, i've never had issues with the community in the 4.5k+ hours i've played the game. Then again it's all in single player because i understand only a knob would go looking for positive human interaction in a video game. Sometimes i wonder if people go looking for terrible people and interact with them knowing it's going to be a bad experience specifically so they have something to complain about later.

I haven't seen that. It's just that, like a lot of complex games, the types who afraid their pee pee is small will get very loud and toxic with their opinions because it's easier for them to sound smart and more difficult to refute them without long, drawn out explanations. Most people that play this game seem to simply ignore those types, and when there is a response warranted, it tends to be very calm and fact oriented like this video.

Well said. Funny watching some of the videos that get posted showing 50k to 100k CPU warships destroying stuff and I ended up not trying to match those kinds of ships. I went for sub 5k pcu ships and am fine if I lose it. It's fun to try out my ships vs them even when I'm out classed. I really hate trying to match the meta although my ships will respond to it. All my survival ships have even a basic grav drive so enemies can't close on my ships. I took a big hint from you and have some kind of control or helm that I can reach quick. It's amazing how many videos are of people unaware and how long it takes them to respond. I actually made your 15k pcu ship once and enjoyed flying it for ages. I never had a chance to try it in pvp at the time.

On one of the official servers i play on nowadays, there are some griefers who use alt accounts to make gun spam ships up to 60k PCU, probably more, and keen doesn't really care. Can you tell us how we can counter them with our little 20k PCU or less ships?

multiaccounts are currently prohibited on official servers, if the account is in family access, then you cannot log in to the server, I had a ship for 40,000 psu, but we built it with my guys from the faction

Every player have different taste, doctrine, many servers have different rules etc. I usually build "ship for everything" and avoid combat. But if i need to fight? Drones are the way. :D Its anoying for others and pretty effective, and cheap too. Players also forgot to turn off antenas, relase decoys etc. There is nothing worse than 10 another targets on screen obscuring main target. :D And after last update? You can build really, really cheap drones carrying explosives and turn them on all at once.

That was some toxic content. I'm sorry they approached that so $hitty. I may not think your ships are particullarly attractive, but damn they are 100% beast mode. Also, there are plenty of historical examples of warships that have turret configurations like (or stranger) than yours. That guy has no idea.

Saying that one ship is better then another depends on so many variables of any scenario I prefer to never say that. Even in strait PVP combat there is many things that can change (gravity or not, asteroids or not, what is the speed limit etc..) And for the effectiveness of a ship mostly depends on the limitations that you have, It can be very different from one playthrough to another, In your case, you seem to play a lot on the servers so PCU is the most significant limitation that you have. So large grid ships that are jack of all trades is better In my case I usually make my game more challenging with mods that make resources rarer (ex no uranium anywhere, scarce platinum and other ores, or my next one: cannot build any refinery ) and having MES NPC so I have to be careful of my threat scores that each block brings So for me, it is more efficient to have multiple purpurse-oriented small grid ships with a carrier/base type ship, but that is very PCU deficient. So saying PCU efficient, Fuel efficient, ressource efficient can bring very different designs

I mean, literally the only point I disagree with you on, is the impracticality of welder repair systems attached to a projector overlay. ....HOWEVER, I'll be the -first- to admit if you try to go grandiose (or even medium ranged solutions) with such designs you are absolutely going to outstrip the pcu limitations of even the most generous of servers, it is nice, but not very feasable to do well with the anally retentive restrictions of vanilla servers, when you gotta worry about piping redundancy and MOAR WELDERS as you watch all your available pcu go down the toilet. ....Survival combat means meeting the requirements in fuel and pcu, as much as being capable behind the stick and having an eye for the combat you're going to be facing. Frankly Luca, I wouldn't give the naysayers much thought...they're usually the types designing ships in creative without ever setting foot in survival, and saying "look at my wicked cool awesome ship!". Ignorance is bliss. With as many Creative paperweight designers post to the workshop, and youtube...I find your content to be a refreshing breath of fresh air. Because I know from personal experience, its accurate!

Saw the video but I couldn't finish it because it was all about rant and no substance. I am not a fan of the Luca designed ships BUT I do really like the insight Luca has when I create my own ships. One example that helped me was using other items such as O2/H2 generators to lesson conveyors and PCU. That alone made a huge difference in my ship's usability. Not liking her ships is a personal aesthetic opinion but attacking Luca as a credible creator is purely stupid.

Just to be clear, we're talking Keen official server limits. That's 20,000 PCU. There are people that play that make meta grav-drive ships that really shouldn't be a thing. Artificial mass blocks shouldn't be on official servers.

I wouldn't necessarily say that artificial mass blocks shouldn't be on the servers, since they do have legitimate uses outside of grav drives (being able to use rovers in artificial gravity). What I think needs to be done is a setting to make artificial mass blocks ignore gravity generators on attached grids, and then have that setting on by default. Kinda like how they have a setting for supergridding.

Pretty much everything counts grids attached to rotors, hinges, pistons and connectors as attached grids, and the jump drive also counts magplates and landing gear. "When do you need to drive a rover around a grid in zero-g?" When you have a very large station. Or when you're boarding a very large station because you want to take it intact.

each engineer / ship creator has their own style and/or reasons for how they build/design their own ships as well as what their designing the ship for , pve, pvp, or a combo of both and it may look stupid to you, But remember it was not meant for you, Besides the ships I build for PVE , I myself have pulled from the workshop ships I like but most often need to tweak/alter to make them better for my play style I am somewhat an after market customizer in that way , "and as for those, none of which will go back to said workshop without the Original Creators Approvals" I don't criticize their ships or them at all, the changes I make are for my playstyle "Mostly PVE" of course. PS I build with a pcu limit and adjust ships to be within that limit to get the best performance for me from my PC and SE Luca Keep Building Fighting and Playing your way and Enjoy SE. See you all amongst the Stars

ME who watches this as well building or going for 100,000 pcu multi purpose war ship/carrier (2 Star wars venator inspired back to back for idea of how it looks). And Yes I do plan to make it survival useable. Practical. Nope.

That other video was one of the most toxic SE videos i have ever seen! And directed towards another player too! Otherwise he is just baiting your subs as best as he can, checking how "many" subs that one got vs you. Anyway, plus for handling everything so diplomatic and i like your functional ships! Btw, i did see a lot of junctions and conveyors in that other video, sooooo inefficient 😁

you know, I recently stumbled across another thirsty boi in need of a cold glass of hater-ade, who apparently had lots to say about your design aesthetics, and after laughing through his "review" I combed through a few more of his videos, and it seems being a hyper-critical sardonic douche is just his "thing." seeing his video when I was searching your name brought it up, and that linked me to this video from there. the comment section was a *real* treat as well. while he seems to have a rather unnecessarily high opinion of himself, he *does* design some good looking ships, but, as you've already proven, "good looking" and "survival/PVP ready" are very different things. I won't drop his name or channel unless I'm asked directly, since it does seem a bit like a ploy to grab cheap engagement to resort to personal attacks like that. he does the same thing to Captain Jack though, repeatedly. what is with these dudes hating on female creators?

Luca, regarding our fight, my ship is honestly garbage and I hate that it's used as my representative ship. BUT also, your internet is fucking horrific and made fighting very difficult as not the host. I'm currently designing a better ship - Upthrust focused, increased fuel capacity, full railgun armament. I'd like to fight again once I've got a better ship out, building shit with low motivation is tricky though hahaha. I do think you underrate forward firing arcs, in that footage you showed it was clear how much ammo was wasted shooting the backs of other turrets. Honestly I think you and sand both have good points, and bad points. Fun to watch both vids lol

It’s like the guy has no idea what survival is on SE. Survival ships on SE are going to perform drastically different and have different purposes than those you use in creative to fight your buddies. To say anyone who plays survival pvp makes shitty ships compared to someone who only fights in creative games is comparing different leagues of players altogether. Let that guy come to NA #2 and start mouthing off. Guarantee he gets found before he can build half a ship 😂😂😂

Just insulting others is bad behaviour, in that you, luca, are right. But to build a ship without rules makes most of them unsightly. That is why most servers have them for ship building. Facts about that and opinions would be interesting. Because a common sense is in real ships, why is it not in SE. Besides the resource costs and time for a single ship. For example the rockets are useless, because of the platinum expense.

It's an engineering game, with combat. If you want to flex your combat prowess and climb rank ladders, you're probably in the wrong game... but if you *did*, I would say the best combat engineers are those who can solve the logistics problems survival provides while still maintaining combat requirements... otherwise you're just a really "good pilot" in a rather weak dogfighting game. If your ego is attached to SE combat, just play a different game. Honestly, if you launch SE for anything other than building ships, I can likely suggest a much better game for you.

I'll never get why people opt for PvP in Space Engineers. Of all the space building games it's probably the worst balanced for combat. Empyrion Galactic Survival for example is built around combat/survival and is vastly better at it then SE is. It's like other game devs put in countless years perfecting games specifically catering to PvP players and instead they go "no, i'll play this game with the worst possible survival and combat mechanics of any game produced in the last 7 years instead".

Just getcha a big heavy armored ship with a Grav drive, hasn’t failed me yet in vanilla (Grav drive is less of an exploitive than spin to win if we’re being honest)
