A critical ship review of the SSU 310 Wombat by Sahb on Space Engineers, the Wombat is a small survival ship that's efficiently built with everything you need while looking aesthetically pleasing and using low PCU for what it is, though with some inefficiencies here and there

You have inspired me to make my designs more PCU efficient, although I don't think I'll ever be as strict about it as sometimes I'm willing to pay the price for the redundancy.

@@LucaTheGuide I was surprised by how much PCU I removed by taking out all the Doors previously used to pressurise the entire interior. Swapping them out for cockpits where possible and pressurising only one small crew section was a huge efficiency boost.

@@mikemarkwilka4135 Yeah, it's been a personal hobby of mine to do a PCU strip of designs I like, keeping their aesthetic while seeing how much PCU I can cut down or even increase their functionality within the same PCU budget. Unfinished LCDs and lights as greebling are one of my personal bugbears. I have saved up to 20% of a blueprint's PCU by deleting all the unfinished functional blocks, replacing them with unfinished windows, armor panels, or similar 1 PCU substitutes.

@@MediumRareOpinions Ha ha oh yeah, some ship designs go completely gaga for doors and airlocks. I totally get it from a "real life" compartmentalization and pressurization POV. But at 100 PCU a pop, SE does not reward you for putting in multiple full airlocks. With just 2 doors, an air vent, and a couple conveyors (connecting back to an O2 tank) and armor blocks in between, that's easily 220+ PCU. That can buy you a lot of other functionality within a PCU budget. I've cut 1000s of PCUs in doors alone from some ship designs that I otherwise liked on the Workshop. :D Restricting air pressurization to only the crew habitation and recreation section would make sense in real life and is more cost-effective in SE PCU. Same goes for multiple connectors, too many LCDs, lights, etc. nothing's wrong with 5, 10, or even 20 lights on a ship. But one light every 2 blocks in a single hallway is a bit much for me. I've seen some creators mix 1-2 actual light sources with more neon lights to use the cheap 1 PCU neon emissive blocks that don't actually give off light, combined with actual light from only a few key 25 PCU lights. Also, spotlights are more taxing on the game than nondirectional interior/corner lights despite the same PCU.

The bottom connector would be for landing on a station, i think. Then you can have a horizontal and vertical connector for in atmosphere. The top one is definitely for small ships, and the front one looks to be for docking to other large ships.

As someone who plays survival exclusively (no combat) i thought the design was brilliant. The ship is designed for exploration and not combat so things like the centralization of many components means it both easier to build and repair. Not every ship needs to be a combat ship.
@LucaTheGuide
@LucaTheGuide Жыл бұрын
That would be a sensible explanation c= if it isn't a combat ship the design makes more sense then x3 though modularity or decentralization can help on non-combat ships too by making them more resilient to attacks, it's a tradeoff I guess

the way the drill arms are kind of recessed here makes me think of some kind of retracting/extensible arm that hooks up to a welder grinder pair in the retracted position, so the arm can be replaced with another tool as the situation demands for it, but I'm not sure about the capability of automating that transfer

On a small ship like this, a lot of the time the internals functionals block are centralized like this so it makes sense to put a welder to fix them in case damage occurs, also that place is right under a weapon placement so it might receive some extra hate if any opponents has set their weapons to target weapons

@@LucaTheGuide I kind of do too, you and I agree there. I fully agree about having all of the gyro's in one spot being bad but the use of a repair welder for them I think is good. Most of the ships I see going through your reviews don't have repair projectors and that feels like an important thing missed when designing a ship. A repair projector along with welders and critical components like gyro's being spread out and having welders close will make repair easier. Side note I have seen plenty of successful use of welders in pvp. They don't make a ship invincible but they extend the survivability for a while.

I like the half block layer on the bottom allowing for landing gear and the connector to extend slightly from the hull. I like the ore detector being near the front of the ship, and the drills, so it works so much better. Too bad about the front trying to be a docking point and a drill front at the same time. The fins block fields of fire, which is unfortunate because they look good, perhaps if they were slightly smaller? I really like the wrapped armor aesthetic

This might be a good use of a welder. Its internal so its safer, gyros and jump drives are critical and have a lot of hp. Also if the welder breaks it can be repaired internally. And luca makes a good point, centralization is bad but on the hand its a tiny fast light armor low pcu ship it wasnt taking a beating anyways

It wouldn't surprise me if that welder was there as a "in case of Klang" defense... I recently had all the connections to my cargo container get taken out and the container take heavy damage.. it was fully surrounded by armor and other components that didn't take damage.. just the conveyor connections and the container itself.. somehow a piece of rock got past my drills in the front, fazed through the intervening components without hurting anything and almost destroyed the entire point of having cargo containers on a mining ship. I sometimes put the drills recessed like that on ships that are mutli-purpose to keep them from incurring phantom forces and just keep the components for a pair of pistons in a small storage container and grind down and rebuild it when i need to do some mining. leaving the drills there reminds me why i have those spots on the front of the ship if i don't play for a while. It looks like there is sufficient clearance that you can skim an ice deposit in an emergency without breaking anything if you have to.

So this build sits in the place that i always build in, low pcu low weight high thrust. The thing that most suprises me about this build is how many large hydros have been fitted in. I have a similar ship pretty much all round except for only having two hydro tanks, fitting 4 in and keeping a small form factor is an achievement! mine are separated to avoid hydro racking maybe thats ehere i lost the space?...and the interior is amazing in this build perfect balance of interior to ship size. Hands down best build you've showcased

"I thought about doing this myself but the problem is these are 50 PCU each so it feels wasteful." I think you just articulated why talking about PCU, at all, makes me cringe. It's anathema to creativity. It's putting an artificial barrier in front of how you want to design and how you want it to look. You said yourself it feels wasteful, and the feeling of wastefulness is a form of guilt. You literally feel guilty for wanting to do it... just because of this arbitrary, artificial, imposed restriction. And it probably makes other creators feel bad too to get "points knocked off" the "goodness" of their creations for, in your eyes, "being wasteful." This is why I entirely ignore PCU as a game mechanic, refuse to play on servers that turn it on, and never turn it on when I set up my own servers even when they're public. PCU is tyranny. Down with PCU.

Another point of view is that the game is called Space ENGINEERS, and a huge part of engineering is figuring out how to achieve your goals within the limitations imposed by the world. I totally get your desire for complete design freedom, but a large part of the community (myself included) loves trying to build within those limits. That said, Luca's years of online MP play has made her a bit fanatical. The connector on top is fine, and is almost certainly there for a small ship to dock. The bottom connector is fine as it a connector that is completely flush with the bottom armor. Luca prefers to have connectors sticking all the way out but it's irrelevant, the only question that matters is "can it dock?". Between the front and bottom connector that ship will have no problems docking at any station, even if it's has a small scout or mining ship docked on top. Because myself and Luca build from different schools of thought there's plenty of her stuff that drives me crazy. I prefer to have a separate mining ship, a cargo ship, and a base, and perhaps a combat ship. Luca prefers to have an all-in-one behemoth. Either way is perfectly valid. I choose my way so that if I get wreckless or lose a battle, I can lose my ship completely and just respawn back at my hidden base. Then I can build another ship and just get back into it. It's far less likely that Luca will lose a battle, but if she does, she loses everything and has to start over unless she has a stockpile hidden somewhere. On this ship I would remove the front drills, add a storage container in that area that isn't conveyored to anything, put the drill parts in there as well as enough to add some conveyors to extend them out from the ship. Then when I need to do some mining it take a minute to build the drills on the front, get what I need, and remove the drills again. That way the drill never block the from connector, and having them always there when you aren't using them IS A WASTE OF PCU LUCA. Hehehehekekekekeke! Finally I get to tell LUCA TO STOP WASTING PCU!

They're based on how blocks affect server performance though c= but yeah if PCU isn't a concern then it shouldn't be a problem x3

@@mrJMD All my ships are 400-500m long. Player made missiles would one shot all these low PCU ships. I mean one hit, very little left. You can remote controll the missile and guide it to the target. Basically unlimited range. They can't take the hit, can't avoid the missile and have too little firepower to stop it. These missiles cost nothing PCU wise. Fill a container with pistol ammo and when it goes bang. Thats the whole ship gone.

@@mrJMD I came here to say exactly your first point: "A huge part of engineering is figuring out how to achieve your goals within the limitations imposed by the world." Obvs SE is a sandbox game, so people can indulge in their fictional escapism however they want. I've done my unlimited creative mode rampages too, with 40k PCU ship builds. But in defining different limits and challenges for myself, I've found MORE creativity. Different kinds of creativity are fine, but it's inaccurate for Cronyx to say that budget limitations restrict creativity. You don't have to use it, but don't knock it until you try it. I remember one of the little SE creator gangs on the Workshop periodically put out a rush of designs on a theme. A while back, one was "Design a ship without using any armor blocks." Boom, limitation. Saw a lot of really creative builds from that. Some of my neatest "large grid gone small" shuttles came from me sticking to a 500-PCU limit. Minimalism is an accepted form of art style. So you can't say it's not creative. it's not for everyone, which is fine. And it's often not something that less experienced people from developed nation cultures really get, at first. It's a fairly universal human reaction to think that "more is better" -- our psychology defaults to additive, not subtractive. That's been shown in studies on human design processes. Even when a simpler or more elegant solution would offer more improvement, human design participants often tend to assume they should add to the design before they think to consider taking away from the design. It's also why we don't see negative space in design right away, either. But there's a reason why, once you see it, often the reaction is "that's so cool". Taking away requires some combination of experience, training, and/or education. But most of all mindset. Having all the former qualities but no motivation to implement "less is more" won't get you to elegance or minimalism in design. Again, far from the only approach to creativity, but definitely can't say that it's not creative.

I know its your opinion and I should mind my own business but WHY IN THE GODDAMN WORLD would you ever fight a capital with a survival ship?? The guns are likely made according do the ship's size, cuz artillery just (even for its range and damage) isn't worth it. Also even though its really efficient, spamming railguns or craploads of artillery isn't just expensive, but also hard to make aesthetically (that's a hard word to write) pleasing (maybe railguns yes but arty... unless it's fixed cannons, it's a hard pass). personally nope, I would rather love my uranium and use it in my reactors than wasting it on arty, which, if it doesn't connect, is a huge loss, depending on the amount of arty turrets/cannons. Also, you are aiming for, multiplayer survival, right? Since PCU limits are real. Last, the chances of getting railgunned into vitals aren't really worth thinking about, since railguns, even with terrifying damage, hit in an absolute straight line, so the accuracy required is above aimbot level to knock you out with one round (or one wave of them). Although I acknowledge the damage that they do if they connect with a hydrogen tank or a reactor. This is a long read I managed to make...
