Space Engineers is a sandbox game about engineering, construction, exploration and survival in space and on planets. Players build space ships, space stations, planetary outposts of various sizes and uses (civil and military), pilot ships and travel through space to explore planets and gather resources to survive. Featuring both creative and survival modes, there is no limit to what can be built, utilized and explored.

I like to remove the middle rear thruster and replace it with an ore detector as soon as I can. Two forward thrusters is plenty and it gives you much needed components early on. And I take the drill right off the survival kit. It places the drill just to one side of you. Or off that bottom connection of the cargo container for a "scraper" drill setup (depending on my mood).

Same, cargo and drill off the kit. I also use that second lower connection where he put the basic refinery for the basic assembly so the cockpit keeps the vent and stays pressurized. The setup uses way less conveyors so you get to the drill much faster. The basic assembly goes away eventually so no need to kill the vent to do that. The basic assembler gets replaced with a cargo as well eventually. Makes life easier when you are boating between asteroids if you don’t die from suffocation. In space you really don’t need much more than that until you get a smaller mining ship.

I also prefer to knock out the right side window and place the drill system on the side of the survival kit. Usually a conveyor junction then a piston and then the drill. That way I can extend it out a bit and get the drill into places where I can’t get the ship closer to. Also you could put the assembler on the underside of the cargo container next to the basic refinery. Although I normally would switch the 2 around so the basic refinery is connected to the bottom of the small cargo container and the top of it sits under the floor there and the basic assembler behind that in the other conveyor port. If I recall correctly this means you don’t need to move the gyroscope either.

I tend to go using the conveyor block that was originally connected to the vent to push out and set a pair of cargo boxes on each side. then It's not hard to attach drills to the sides. Or even wrap them more around the cock pit. And at one time I accidentally destroyed the rear of my respawn ship so they ended up split and had to rebuild it. Everything just behind the hydrogen engine detached or destroyed. I ended up resetting the Thrusters so they were arranged wider, and I could attach a few more parts around the back conveyor setup. In response to that, I build a wider array of drills to the front too, and they ended up in a sort of wide diamond shape, making it Actually more effective to dig and move around, with a connector planted just behind one of the far drills so I could dock it to the sides to any base structure that had greater refinery setups. So Extra storage, extra thrust, and extra drills.

i put 3 drills in front as the darn things in vanilla drill soooo slow and i put 1 more o2 gen at the back with access going to both the refiner and passing to the front with 1-2 small large containers also as mentionned in other comment i remove 1 ion thruster from the rear and replace with ore large detector the extra o2 is for the extra hydro for engine in emergencies it gobbles up alot still and much ice is needed to keep it fueled :-)
