So we thought it would be fun to let the kids try and guess a variety of space foods blindfolded - if they get them right Mr & Mrs Barry have to eat a double dare jelly bean in true internet challenge style.

By the way most food eaten in space today is very normal. ISS astronauts eat the same stuff we eat down here. Steaks, salads, eggs, pasta, burgers etc. Food that produces crumbs is avoided though (like bread) as it would be somewhat dangerous with all the machinery around. ISS astronauts can request meals though so they can pretty much get anything they want. Much of it comes dehydrated though, which makes it a little different. Space food has come a very long way from the early days with nutrient pastes and similar.

I have 2 chronic lower back pain conditions, Lumbar Spinal Stenosis and Degenerative Disc Disease and Osteoarthritis in both of my knees and in my hips. Yep, too crumbly for space. As much as the Simpsons scene of Homer in space was joke, stuff going everywhere in zero-g and getting into machinery is an actual potential hazard.

I completely agree with Mrs. Barry! The texture of freeze dried ice cream affects me exactly the same way nails on a chalkboard does. Or someone scratching styrofoam. It’s so cringey

Good fun, and glad that you managed to rescue it. If you add a small amount of water to freeze dried fruit, it will reconstitute into a more recognisable state. It's good used to make muesli with, but frankly, the texture is so intriguing, that I'd have eaten it before it got that far. The Icecream was never used in space, but was developed for use, but in the end, the real cold stuff was used as a treat. Freeze-dried food, if kept in airtight packs, can still be perfectly edible forty years after it was made.

Neapolitan ice-cream is popular here in Australia. It's a great idea for BBQ's and sleepovers because you buy one tub and everyone is satisfied with the flavours ^.^ The girls did so good at picking out the foods! I probably wouldn't have done that well.

We had neopalitain ice cream big time in the 70s too. Mom froze it hard, then sliced the container to mske sure all of the kids got their shsre. My bigger brothers were hogs.

The problem with so-called "space food" is that a lot of dehydrated things are very crumbly, and the truth of real astronaut foods is that crumbly is to be avoided absolutely. From what I have seen in videos about food they have on the space station, anything bready or cake-like is moist and not crumbly, other things are spreads, have thick sauces and otherwise very stable in structure. This is simply because they can't have stuff crumbling and going everywhere in zero gravity and getting in machinery.

Well the stuff in the video isn´t "real" space food. While many of the food sent to the ISS is dehydrated they of course hydrate it before eating which makes it less crumbly. Also today ISS astronauts can get pretty much anything so there is no real specific space food anymore. Same stuff we eat down here, with the only difference being that its usually dehydrated so it lasts longer.
