I was in the USAF in the 2000's, in space command. There was already a lot of talk about separating from the USAF and creating a branch of the military for space operations. It's no different than when the USAF split from the Army, the operating environment, threats, objectives, and skills required are all sufficiently different than the USAF to warrant a new branch of the military.

8:05 when we created the air force, their first objective was exactly what the space force is doing now. It took key infrastructure from the other branches and implemented them into the new branch. Before the air force was on their own, they were part of the army. Just like today, before the space force became their own, they were a part of the air force. Its just too early for them to conduct major missions by themselves, they have to rally everything up, then they can go on.

Space Force was probably born a few years/decades too early, I always thought that if we were gonna have a part of the military dedicated to space stuff it would've been a sub-branch of the Air Force or something until space travel advances considerably enough to dedicate a whole branch.

Imagine being a nation without satellites trying to hit back but being unable to see what's above you (or not knowing if those above you can see you). I just clicked on the video so I don’t know if Vics is being sarcastic or not, but I’ve been saying for a while now that the Space Force makes a lot of sense because of just how important keeping satellites protected are. Not just for military purposes during war but also for the daily running of the country and the globe including telecommunications, Internet, GPS, etc. Managing these assets and protecting them is very important. Also managing outer space is very different than managing air space so it makes sense to create a separate branch for it than it just being part of the Air Force. For example, the Air Force used to be a part of the army, but now it is its own branch.

The interception and control of radio signals will reduce the need for physical confrontation.

So without all these satellites I'd have to live like I did in the early 90s? Oh no. That sounds so.... perfectly fine.

The Soviets were also seriously thinking of detonating a nuclear device on the moon to show they had reach it first. I think the thing a lot of people dont understand about the space race is that it wasnt about putting up commsat or gps or spysats. It was proving that the ballistic missile technology of both countries was capable of delivering nuclear payloads anywhere on earth.

The Military said that Space Force would be a reboot of the cancelled Star Wars program. I don’t see it yet. So I’m disappointed.
