In December 2019, the United States established its new space force: the United States Space Force. A logical step in a globalized and digitized world whose infrastructure depends on satellites in space. This infrastructure is under threat. Also by a resurgence of conflict between East and West. This episode of Spacetime describes how the military conquered space and why the world is in a new arms race in Earth orbit.

And unfortunately, a nice way to come to realize how fucking stupid is humankind. It's not enough for it to pollute the planet with all its shit, they even found a way to pollute space and the other planets around us. Just the thought of it brings me back to my suicidal tendencies. Such a tiny planet, a speck in the whole univers and its many countries can't even get along....what a shame if you ask me

36:38 Early U.S. recon satellites did have, along with the film capsules, radio telemetered visual data, although at a much lower resolution. Light from a camera lens was scanned, encoded, and "written" onto a [very] large roll of film. Then the light image on the film was scanned and detected, as the signal to control the radio transmission. I'm pretty sure that system was largely designed by Polaroid, with Dr. Land having a significant hand in the engineering. From Secret Sentries in Space, by Phillip Klass, which is a great Spy Satellite 101 primer.

We are apex predators. If humans didn’t have a warring instinct, we would still be in the Stone Age. Every inch of this planet has had blood spilled for it. Peace and civility are a thin veneer that quickly disappears when our primal instincts kick in. Every intelligent species on the planet has a dark violent side and we are no different. If aliens ever visit us, they will have a history of warfare as well.

Though I thoroughly enjoyed this video, the real and profound danger of 'space junk' was not given enough emphasis. I believe that the History Channel or SciFi did an entire episode on the topic. It is mathematically inevitable that there will be so much debris that it will be impossible to maintain satellites in orbit... which is, umm, HUGE. And the effort required to clean it up is either ENOROMOUSLY EXPENSIVE or physically/technologically impossible. Bad news for future generations.

Agreed, this is an ever increasing threat to use of near-space vehicles. Several organizations are attempting to create a sane 'trash-collection' strategy and the (probable vehicles) that will accomplish this. But the problem is - as always - very difficult. And so little real progress has been made at this time. I think it is because no-one-oligarch wants to focus on this. Maybe Elon Musk will get a bee in his bonnet about it, and try to do something constructive with his team of brilliant engineers.

I disagree. We already have technology capable of either destroying or de-orbiting space junk to burn up on re-entry. I'm not convinced of it's huge danger, if we can so accurately track even some of the smallest pieces of debris. It has recently been proven that it is easier to alter the trajectory of space-borne objects, than we even imagined, with the recent deliberate satelite-meteor collision. It's a matter of priority though, I agree

I agree with comments made regarding this excellent documentary. The establishment of a 6th Branch of Armed Services for The US was definitely a necessary step. Space is no longer a benign environment - it is slowly by surely becoming a contested arena. Currently - there’s a great deal of junk in orbit - debris from satellite launches, booster separations, etc. This is becoming a problem. One Space Shuttle Window was slightly damaged when was impacted by a paint chip - traveling at 17,000 + MPH. Debris is not the only issue at stake. What if a rogue state decides to launch (a) satellite(s) designed to contaminate specific orbits used by commercial and/ or military satellites? Given the unpredictable nature of leaders such Kim Jong Un of North Korea 🇰🇵, such an action isn’t out of the realm of possibility.

It was a terrible lack of vision that JFK didn't intend to build a permanent lunar base than just having astronauts visit and walk on the moon for a few hours. I mean, had it been part of the original space race plan, then the space industry would be much more advanced today with (probably) frequent trips to Mars with a permanent colony and base operating on Mars. Similarly Elon Musk doesn't have a greater vision than colonising the red planet, when he should be thinking about Mars as a launchpad to venture into very deep space and possible generational ships to colonise distant Earth-like planets in other solar systems.

IN AT LEAST TRYING TO MAKE ALL OF OUR OWN BABIES FUTURE PLANET, AND LIVES A MORE PEACEFUL, SUSTAINABLE, PLANET TO LIVE ON !!!!!! BY SOCIALLY COOPERATING WITH, AND PLANNING THE PLANETS FUTURE GEOPOLITICAL ARCHITECTURE TOGETHER. !!!! INSTEAD OF CONTINUALLY TRYING TO DEFEAT EACH OTHER !!!!! WE ALL MUST LEARN TO ACCEPT THE FACT THAT WE'RE ALL SHARING A COSMICALLY FLOATING EXTREMELY VULNERABLE BIOSPHERE !!!! ALONG WITH ALL OF THE OTHER ORGANISMS/SPECIES EXTREMELY VULNERABLE ECO SYSTEMS !!!!!! BY FINALLY BECOMING CIVILIZED ENOUGH TO GRASP THAT FACT !!!! WE CAN LEARN TO REFUSE TO HARM OR CONTINUALLY KEEP ON TRYING TO KILL OURSELVES, AND EACH OTHERS BABIES !!!! I REALIZE THAT IS A SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT THAT'S CURRENTLY BEING CALLED A WORLD WIDE COMMUNIST GOVERNMENT SYSTEM !!!!!! I WANT MY FUTURE BABIES ANCESTORS TO HAVE A FUTURE PLANET THAT'S WORTH LIVING ON !!!!! WHY ARE WE HU--MONKEYS SO UNCIVILIZED !!!! DON'T YOU WANT YOUR OWN FUTURE BABIES ANCESTORS TO HAVE A DECENT CHANCE FOR THEIR OWN FUTURE SURVIVAL ????????? CHOOSE AS WISELY AS POSSIBLE !!!!!! IT'S NOW TIME TO MAKE THAT PERSONAL CHOICE HU--MONKEYS !!!!!!!! YOUR FUTURE BABIES ANCESTORS LIVES REALLY ARE IN YOUR HANDS !!!!

We need a giant vacuum system in space to clean up the debris. And whoever makes the Mess gets to pick it up.

European Space entities both government and commercial are developing space debris cleanup systems unlike the messy world powers. However these "clean up" satellites could be utilized to knock out satellites as well. The sword has two edges ;)

There are a few U.S companies developing something similar.

You can be sure the primary reason for financing these satellites is for your second point, any space debris is mainly to placate tax payers.

Prettttty sure that anti-missile and bombardment weapons have been in space since the early 90s. There is a rush to dominate certain special orbital positions and i wonder if there is already stuff going on up there between China and the U.S. But if the US has tungston rod bombardment RIP anyone who thinks they can withstand it.

Surprisingly ineffective and downright silly economically lol yea they'd pack a punch but with only the approximate yield of a MOAB and many many many times the cost and complexity of delivering that yield, it's just hilariously impractical
