In this episode I will restore this Invader console made by Gakken. It's not working and the screen is broken and it needs a full restoration.
I started by finding out why the console wasn't working. I don't have schematics for teh circuit board so it's much harder to try to figure out what's wrong. I first tried to replace the capacitors as they're parts that will break when they get old and it's a common issue with older electronics. Next I looked for any broken older joints. I found one and after fixing it the screeen started to work. There was still some issues so I figured it there's likely other broken joints too, or some dirt causing the circuit to short. I cleaned the borad and reflowed the solder in all of the joints on the board. After this the game started working normally.
The switch for the difficulty level was still stuck. I removed it fro mteh board and cleaned it with my ultrasonic cleaner in isopropyl alcohol.
Ultrasonic cleaner build: • Making My Own Ultrason...
Next I took a photo of the broken screen and recreated it in Photoshop. I printed the graphix fro a new screen on a plastic sheet and cut it into shape. Similarly I took photo of the sticker and used that and other pictures I was able to find from the internet to recreate the sticker and printed it on a silver sticker paper.
I cleaned the screws and battery contact in the ultrasonic cleaner and replated them with nickel.
Nickel plating tutorial: • How to make simple DIY...
Thanks for watching, I hopy you enjoyed the video!

OMG! This exact game was my Christmas gift from my grandmother about 40 years ago in Japan. I still remember this like yesterday! I was hero because I let my neighbour friends to play. Thank ODD THINKING for fixing this. Thank you grandma, I miss you.

That's heartwarming. I miss my grandma too. Hey, is this game basically the same as Fire Away by Tandy? Because it sure sounds the same. It's very Space Invaders-y, with red UFOs racing by at the top of the screen.

Fun Fact, these were known as Galaxy Invader consoles here in the UK, they came in 3 varieties. This model, a Galaxy Invader 1000 model and a Galaxy Invader 10000 model (The 10000 one being the rarest and most expensive to collect). I have all 3 and grew up playing the 1000 model of this as a kid (given by grandparents as it was my fathers), it's incredibly fun and amazing to see you restore such a device that's so dear to my heart and childhood. Thanks buddy! Keep it up!

I had this space invaders game. I had it around 86/87. True story: one day a friend and I went into my garage and closed the door so it would be nice and dark to see the game better. However upon leaving the garage the inside safety cable snapped. We were locked inside and the mother called the fire service to get us out. It was scary being only 7 at the time. Not the dark, or being locked in but the whupping I was sure to get from my mum.

You really should buy and use some flux to help with the soldering job, specially the reflow. The "score" is showing stuff that doesn't look like a number, probably has bad solders or it has dead segments. But hey, now it works! Good job!

I still have my Texas Instruments space invaders game. We got it when I was walking with my brother and dad, and we found $20 in the street. When you’re 8, it feels like you won the lottery (in 1982). Anyway our dad let us go to a toy store and pick anything we wanted. We chose space invaders! Even though this one was a different company, still brings back lots of fun memories. Thanks so much!

tip: ultrasonic cleaning works best when the cleaning solution itself vibrates, but the object being cleaned does not. That is why commercial models have small baskets that hold the dirt objects to keep it away from vibrations.
