This is a recording of a Space Shuttle crew and flight controller training session in the Shuttle Mission Simulator in Houston. The recording captured out-the-window views, the flight instrument display, and selected system & navigation displays in the Shuttle cockpit. In addition, all crew conversation, air-to-ground communication, and simulator sound effects were captured. Four displays are captured in a single video frame using picture-in-picture. The unique feature of these recordings is the capturing of all the in-cockpit conversation not transmitted to the ground. These recordings give a good idea of what went on in the Shuttle cockpit during busy phases of flight, when numerous off-nominal “malfunction” scenarios were being worked by the flight crew and Mission Control. The “Ascent #1” training session begins 30 seconds prior to liftoff and ends with the vehicle at 150,000 ft. on entry for a Trans-Atlantic Abort (TAL). The four video windows contain- (1) Top Left- left side out-the-window view (2) Top Right- flight instruments (3) Bottom Left- mostly navigation displays selected by the crew (4) Bottom Right- system and navigation displays selected by the crew. In this session a fuel cell leak, flight control problems, main engine failure, Orbital Maneuvering System (OMS) failure, and a cabin leak are being worked. With all the failures, an abort to the trans-Atlantic abort landing site is called by Mission Control.
