How to Easily Set Up a Minecraft Server and Connect it to a Domain

This video shows how to setup a Minecraft Server in docker on an Unraid server. The video sjoes how to install it and then link it to a domain or subdomain using SRV records.
It actually isn't necessary to use an SRV record to have the connection as minecraft will by default try port 25565 by default. But using an SRV I think is still a good idea especially if you want to use a 'non standard' port for minecraft. Then when using a non standard port you dont have to set the port in the minecraft client. I think it is better not to use the common port for the minecraft server and use an unknown port as this potentially is more secure. Also if you only want people you know to be able to access the server then edit the server properties config file and change whitelist to true. Restart container then
Adding and removing players to the accesslist
1. Open webui on the container to see the console.
2. In the console, you will need to type “whitelist add playername”. For example, “whitelist add spaceinvaderone”.
3. After you type this command, you will see a message stating “player added to whitelist”.
4. to remove type “whitelist remove playername”

One thing is actually if using the standard minecraft server port 25565 you dont need to use an SRV record as the minecraft client tries this port by default. So, everything has been working fine for weeks, now all of a sudden I get the io.netty.channel.abstractchannel$annotatedconnectexception connection refused error when I try to connect via the domain name. I'm still able to connect via the IP address (both my LAN and WAN IPs). Has anyone else had this issue? Nothing else has changed I don't know why this is happening all of a sudden I've rebooted my network, router, and server. Any suggestions??

I tried to add an SRV record for subdomain plex to send traffic to 32400 and it doesn't seem to be working like Minecraft is. if if add the port to the end of the web address it works, but the subdomain still routes back to my router page when remote access is enabled. Is there something different needed with SRV record to get it to direct traffic for a subdomain to a specific port?

Great video Be careful setting online-mode to false, as it skips account authentication and will let anyone log in under any username (they can log in as you). Doesn’t matter too much if you are on a private server with people you trust

Though I can't see the comment, PP_Hyperion asked "how did you manage to set this one up. I've tried multiple times, but it cannot refresh the profile list. Have you also encountered this problem?" You have to be very careful with the permissions for this docker. If they are not set correctly, the WebUI will not load properly.

This is the exact video (my kids) have been waiting for, thanks a ton! I have been running UNRAID for years but still get hit with this error with almost ALL the dockers even following the tutorials 100%. Share binhex-minecraftserver set to not use the cache, but files / folders exist on the cache drive. Maybe my unraid setup was wrong to begin with?

Hey! I was doing a bit of digging on how to prevent the IP from being exposed, and it seems it's possible to do this by using Ngrok, and an NCFS Minecraft Server (docker) to tunnel the connection through Cloudflare.. It would be cool if you could get this done in a video!

Hi. So I've been following this tutorial and I encountered big issue. Currently newest MC version is 1.20.2 yet I want to make MC server for 1.16.5. There is a field for version in EDIT menu of the docker, but even though I input 1.16.5, it still creates server for 1.20.2. No matter if I edit it or reinstall the docker and input desired version before installation. Can anyone help me on this one?

When you made the duplicate container, did you also change the Appdata to something unique? I think you'll need to click "Show More Settings..." down the bottom of the page while building from a template.

Been waiting for this one! 😁 Are there any safety concerns when exposing your server to the Internet like this? You mentioned the WAN IP would be visible through Minecraft, is that an issue for the security of the other Dockers on the server, or the rest of your home network? Just want to make sure the likes of file shares, and other devices on the network wouldn't be at risk of attacks with this setup. Thanks!

After you type this command, you will see a message stating “player added to whitelist”. 4. to remove type “whitelist remove playername” But basically any thing that you expose on your network to the internet is a potential security risk compared to nothing being exposed having a port open for minecraft it comes down to minecraft server rejecting or resetting connections that are not transmitting what it is looking for (game related information). So be sure to keep everything up to date.

i think is possible to run it over the reverse proxy, as i run my plex over the reverse proxy (Nginx Proxy Manager) and point it back to the port 32400, where the incoming port from the external internet is 443, when i have the time (maybe over the weekend), i will setup the Minecraft server and try reverse proxy over it. i will update my result here.

My kids asked me to set this up and its completely borked. I can run Bedrock but when I install Binhex or any other flavor of vanilla it crashes immediately at startup. Bedrock runs fine. Any reason this would be?

Maybe it's astupid question but how can I change the minecraft version the server is running? It's currently set to 1.19.3 but I want to change it to 1.19.2 because of some shaders and mods. Key 9 says "latest" but changing it to 1.19.2 and adding the 1.19.2 folder to \binhex-minecraftserver\minecraft\versions does not work.

I run this in a virtual machine. A few years ago the docker version for me would end up corrupting all the data and would become unresponsive. Don’t know if this still happens but the virtual machine that I run has never had any problems.

My Server ip changed .02 and now my DNS won't load the server in the multiplayer tab? It did not automatically update at all and everything is set correctly from multiple of your videos. The thing that broke it was my Server changing it's IP.

I think the easier way to do this is to have two Minecraft containers, and see sets of Subdomains etc. For a quick summary on how to do this after you've follow this guide is... Open your docker tab on Unraid and scroll down to the bottom, click the "Add Container" button. From the "Template" field select your existing Minecraft container but you'll need to give it slightly unique settings >> give a unique name (eg. binhex-minecraftserver_group2), change the Ports to something not in use (eg. just add one up from the default on the binhex-minecraft container, such as 25566, and 8223). While still on the this same page, you'll need to click "Show more settings ..." and give a custom AppData Config Path, otherwise both containers would point to the same world data (eg /mnt/user/appdata/binhex-minecraftserver_group2) Test your second server internally. Assuming that all works, and you want a pretty DNS name, just make a second set of records in your Cloudflare account, and a second set of Port Forwarding records in your router That should pretty much do it!

I think your video's are great! I am however stuck. Running into trouble getting past the black screen @ 4:20 in the video. I restart the container but it simply goes back to it (There is no screen to be attached matching minecraft) with out starting the server. Unraid 6.9.2 - Any thoughts on what I am missing?

I've had mixed luck with running this setup with a Valheim server. Sometimes I can connect to my server with the domain name and other times I can't.....I'm not sure why.

At this stage the dedicated bedrock server for linux is plagued with lag & issues for at least the past year. I had to run the dedicated bedrock server from my win PC. Was really hoping you were gonna do your magic & show me how to get a functional bedrock server! hahaha.

I had that too. If the server doesn't start the web ui can't attach to it. 1. Check the appdata folder for the server jar 2. Make sure Key 8 is the correct path to that jar At least that is what worked for me

You can type your version in "Container Variable: JAVA_VERSION" Just change from "latest" to your wished version

Can a person setup other applications to do like you have done with Minecraft with no port number on the server name?

Only if SVR dns entries are supported.

@@rodvanrhyn1612 the other applications have to support the SRV record lookup request. Not all applications have this support. As long as you have the right settings on the record, and the application supports it, you can use SRV.

Also, Minecraft itself checks port 25565 when connecting without a specified port number, so an SRV record isn’t necessary as long as the server is exposed on the default port.
