On 27 April 2016 SpaceX announced that they will proceed with the robotic mission for a 2018 launch and NASA will be providing technical support.
SpaceX's 2018 trip would use what the company calls its Dragon spacecraft boosted into space by Falcon Heavy, a massive rocket powered by 27 first-stage engines. Falcon Heavy would have more than 5 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, or about the equivalent of 18 747 airplanes.
Mars launch opportunities occur every 26 months, and the next launch window opens in May 2018. If SpaceX misses that chance, the next Mars window comes in July and August of 2020.

Great job simulating this mission! May I use a portion of your video to explain how SpaceX intended to land Red Dragon on Mars?

So what happens to the core stage. The other two landed but was the middle one discarded as debris?
@rseferino1
@rseferino1 7 жыл бұрын
The central core is discarded, because the required escape velocity does not allow it to be recovered.

There isn't a good Dragon v2 for Orbiter yet as far as I've been able to find. I could 3D model the Dragon v2, but trying to animate anything from Blender to Orbiter is a huge headache that just ends up pissing me off. lol I would want at least the solar panels, the nose cone hiding the docking port, and landing legs to be animated. However, I would think someone is already well on their way to having a good Dragon v2 package at the Hangar website soon. There is a Falcon Heavy package, but to work in Orbiter 2016, you need the beta patch to install over the top of it. However, the heaviest payloads won't get all the way to orbit like they will in Orbiter 2010. He is working on a new package to be fully compatible with Orbiter 2016. Maybe he will include a Dragon v2 with both a Falcon 9 (for low orbit) and Falcon Heavy launch configurations in the new package, or at least, I hope he does. A one stop shop for a 'SpaceX Falcon Complete' Orbiter 2016 package would be ideal for my particular interests simulating an interplanetary space program. I'd much rather just deal with making 'spacecraft3' type interplanetary vehicles assembled from parts I use the Falcons to launch into LEO. In the near term, any other reusable rockets made by other manufacturers are just going to be copycatting the SpaceX Reusable Falcon System anyways, so may as well just go with it. ;-D

They're planning on coming into Mars on a direct landing trajectory? No orbiting of Mars first?
@rseferino1
@rseferino1 7 жыл бұрын
Entering orbit means using more fuel. For the landing only fuel is used in the terminal trajectory because part of the braking does the atmosphere. More fuel is used by entering orbit and landing.
@ln5321
@ln5321 7 жыл бұрын
Rseferino Orbiter Filmmaker Thanks for the explanation. I thought entering orbit would be helpful because then when you land, you're entering the atmosphere at a lower speed than you would be if you were coming in on a direct landing trajectory, but I guess if the Dragon can handle it, there's no reason to orbit.
@rseferino1
@rseferino1 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, in addition the real Red Dragon must use supersonic retropropulsion to perform precision landings, which they have practiced with the first stages of Falcon 9.

Yes. It's also due to the kind of fuel. To go interplanetary, you need hypergolics. Cryogenics would just boil away in that duration.

Only 7 weeks have passed since the last update, each video requires a time of investigation, tests and recording, because this is not Kerbal when they do things without thinking much, without respecting historical events. At the moment I am in a change in my life, but soon I will restart with new videos. :)
