The digital nomad visa is a residence permit that can be extended up to 5 years and lets non-EU citizens live and work remotely from Spain (legally operating as a digital nomad in the country).

Spain has always been a popular place for tourists, but digital nomads like it even more. What’s not to like??
It has some of the best food in the world and many great places to visit. It is also one of the least expensive places to live in Europe.
Spain wants to grow its economy and take advantage of the trend toward remote work worldwide, so it has a visa program for digital nomads and startups that hire remote workers.
What many digital nomads have been waiting for is finally going to happen. The new digital nomad visa has finally been made public and is now available. People from other countries who want to move to Spain and work remotely can start the application process.

I watched the video more than once very informative, ❤ I’m contacting them I’m planning things ahead, like the fbi fingerprint, getting the employment verification letter. I find out that now is not from HR anymore, is done by Equifax, however they have the information all wrong, like the credit report you can dispute the info, which I did then also sent an email to hr to fixed on their end, as is faster. But I stopped there. I think the services they offer is great planning to use them hopefully.😅

Thanks for the update! I usually like your videos as there's usually not any, or a lot of fluff, but didn't enjoy this one that much. I feel like this information could've been transferred in half the time, also it was weird that she/you didn't mention the minimum wage in Spain, which is about $1,269 USD / month, so 200% of it would be roughly $2,550 USD / month.

Thanks for your candor! The visa is new so we have to speak in more broader terms. The minimum salary can change year to year so we didn’t want to put a specific number, and bringing in family members also ups the salary requirements.

The reason i ask this is: Currently my salary meets the requirements, yet in case of a change in the currency, my salary may remain below the minimum level.

Hi! Right now the official (di financial) requirements are as follows: - Proof of at least three (3) months employment with your employer, translated - Proof employer has existed at least one (1) year, translated - Letter from employer authorizing "the development of remote work from Spain", translated - Documentation "proving the terms and conditions in which the professional activity is going to be carried out remotely" (e.g. contract that specifies remote work), translated - Proof you earn at least 200%/75%/25% of Spanish Minimum Income (SMI) for 1st/2nd/3rd+ person(s) applying This is an all or nothing scenario so if you don’t meet all of the requirements then you might need to contact a professional. Can someone explain the requirement under Spanish law pertaining to the digital nomad visa in regard to the social security certificate? I work remotely for a US-based company. I had a free consultation with an attorney in Spain. They informed me that my employer has to register with the social security offices in Spain and that the US Social Security office has to provide a certificate to the SS office in Spain. Does that sound correct? This information is mostly omitted from other videos or information I have seen online. Any clarification is appreciated.

Yes, that information is correct. The Spanish government introduced a new visa category in 2021 for digital nomads, allowing remote workers to reside in Spain while working for a company based outside of the country. To obtain this visa, there are several requirements that must be met, one of which is obtaining a Social Security certificate. Under Spanish law, any person who works in Spain, whether as an employee or a self-employed individual, must be registered with the Spanish Social Security system. Therefore, if you are applying for the digital nomad visa and plan to work remotely for a US-based company while residing in Spain, your employer must register with the Spanish Social Security offices and obtain a certificate to prove that they have done so. Additionally, your US-based employer must provide a certificate from the US Social Security office to the Spanish Social Security office to confirm that you are covered by social security in your home country. This requirement ensures that you are still covered by your home country's social security system while working in Spain. This is based on the official information provided by the Spanish government on its website for the digital nomad visa, as well as additional information provided by legal experts in Spain. Providing a US social security certificate almost negates the possibility of this visa for US employees as most employers are not willing to register in Spain to provide a certificate, furthermore the US Social Security Administration doesn't provide the required certificate. “Their response is that only employees who are transferred to an employer's physical office or affiliate's office in Spain for a period of less than five years are eligible for a certificate of coverage. The Social Security Totalisation agreement between Spain and the US does not cover remote work”. It would seem that having health insurance would make this requirement unnecessary, but it doesn't. Many remote workers can move wherever they want but employers will not move earth and sky for personal Digital Nomad moves, although they typically authorize it if their involvement is minimal. At the moment this visa seems more geared to freelancers, as does the Portugal one too.

1. Yes 2. Yes - maximum 6 months to renew the visa. Though if you’re going for citizenship it cannot be more than 3 months.

Citizens of Ibero-American countries: Citizens of Ibero-American countries (countries in Latin America, Andorra, Equatorial Guinea, Philippines, Portugal) who have a special historical and cultural connection with Spain can apply for citizenship after 2 years of legal residence. We’re Filipino so we are included in this category 😊

I have a question. I'm a mexican citizen but I grew up and live in the USA. I have DACA which is a work permit that I have to renew evert 2 years as long as I live in the USA. If I get this visa, will I be able to keep working for my USA company even if I lose my USA work permit when it expires? In other words do I need to have a legal status with the USA to be able to work for them in spain?

It varies. The shortest I have seen on Fb groups is 5.5 months, but some have said up to 2 years. So either the process has been improved upon or it’s luck of the draw.

You do a great job and show patience in answering so many questions here and I have learned a lot from the videos actually addressing subjects. :) I hope you get to my questions here. I am a 61 year old digital designer, fellow Californian from the bay area, and just contacted Mariana about my strong interest in the DNV. I'm currently in VLC until this weekend, and want to begin the process to move here, as I experienced major burnout and switched to contract work in January. It seems prudent to get professional advice on what the bottom line is on paying taxes in both countries to make sure working remotely in VLC is going to amount to a lower, AFFORDABLE cost of living-not to mention advice on taxes for my retirement accounts & SS. I'm not sure if you became US citizens, or have to deal with U.S. taxes, but I'd love to know how you went about getting tax advice? Did you get a tax advisor in Spain and the US in order to manage your taxes? My mind has been trained creatively, but taxes are not my cup of tea to say the least, so any direction would be greatly appreciated. I've been googling this stuff, but I can relate to you and your move. Hope you're still enjoying you're adventure in VLC!

The biggest difficulty with this visa is the requirement for the non-Spanish company to cover the employee’s social security costs whilst they reside in Spain.

@@DemyCruzJrStudio it costs 6% of the gross salary. But bear in mind - because your income must be sourced from outside of Spain (the Philippines) you will still need to pay pagibig and philhealth. And you will be double taxed in both Spain (because you’ll be a tax resident there) and in the Philippines (because your income will be Philippine-sourced).

It looks like you’re asking if you can apply for the digital nomad visa because you got accepted for a job in Spain. If that’s the case, unfortunately only 20% of your salary can come from Spain which does not meet the requirements of the visa.

Yes they can apply for PR typically after 5 years, or after 2 years for certain nationalities, or 1 if married to a Spaniard. The minimum is 2x the minimum wage, so you will need to earn roughly 2300€ right now. The minimum wage varies per year.

From our experience the Spanish websites take a while to update. When they first tried to standardize all consulate websites some information was missing in the English pages but were active in the original Spanish version. We updated the description and provided the link 😊

I truly hope this doesn’t cause problems like it did in Portugal. Also, from what I read… you can’t transfer from non-lucrative to the nomad visa. Lots of people here on NLV and working remotely. I hope this is a good thing, I just hope it remains a good thing.

Nice!! Thanks for the informative video!! Our accountant here in Mallorca told us to possibly go for the nomad visa once it became official because the taxes will be 26% vs 50+% ……we are in the application process for a golden visa but we know we will be living here full time and we are total nomads! So hopefully we can snag the better tax bracket 😅🙏🏽

EU citizens don’t need a visa to live in Spain. It’s only offered to non-EU because they need a visa to stay in Spain.
