For those who do not understand the "Spanish" in flamenco-gypsy style of its music, "cante hondo" - done by the lead gypsy flamenco singer, is full of tirades, long notes, and scalar runs and trills. It roughly means "deep chant", or "deep singing", or "deep song." You hear the clapping - that is called "palmas" (lit., "palms"). You also hear a solo flamenco guitarist do a broken-note line that might remind you of Andreas Segovia - it is known as "falseta" or instrumental break, but the break is long, so I call it a "falseton." Then you hear the so called "escalera arabe" - Arabic scale - a Phrygian in D#, where the "secondo augmentado" (augmented second - which are the notes "E-Fx" (x - is double sharp, where you add two semitones to the original note - up) is apparent. And finally, there is a gypsy singing technique of eliminating the "d" in "-ado" or "-ada" terminations of Spanish verbs. For example, a cante hondo singer would say "enamorao" (in love) instead of the proper "enamorado", and treat the "ao" diphthong as a smooth, sliding elision - not separating with any breaks between the "a" and "o".

I love flamenco music...My parents let me go to Granada when I was 17 years old, as a graduation gift from high school. Met my first true girlfriend there, and drank some very good wine from a goat flask in a Gypsy cave, listening to flamenco music and entranced by the pretty dancers. I will never thank my parents enough for that experience so many years ago. Still listen to flamenco music 50 years later!

this is the last scene of 'Latcho Drom', a movie by Tony Gatlif : it is about the Romani people's journey from north-west India -staring the Kalbelia people- to Spain, a diaspora lived through music which originally starts in Egypt-with the Ghawazi people..... The film begins in the Thar Desert in Northern India and ends in Spain, passing through Egypt, Turkey, Romania, Hungary, Slovakia, and France... the most enduring and passionate odyssey driven by the freedom of the gypsy soul....... the gitana" singer in this scene is 'La Caita' she sings mournfully of the centuries of persecution, repeatedly imploring "Why does your mouth spit on me?" as her query echoes out over the town.

Rosalia brought me here. Check her flamenco infused hit here. ROSALÍA - DE AQUÍ NO SALES - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/rN9kn72kncy6goU.html . I wanted to hear real Flamenco singing and it sounds very similar to what she does, with a cool musical beat of course. Very visual as well. She said in an interview how hard it is to sing Flamenco so I had to hear someone else. Also, I was wondering what language it was. Sounded almost Arabic at times. Flamenco is a whole new world to me now.

As an Indian, it is really interesting and beautiful. Beautiful, because I feel the singer is trying to lay off some things frm her broken heart and the song just touches my heart, don't know why. Interesting, bcoz here in India too, we clap while singing or dancing, so as to keep the beat and also, the style is eerily similar.

What I understood, is that the Gypsies came from North-West India, for example Rajasthan. They picked up new instruments, words, and techniques along their travels. But you can hear many words, and techniques and styles from India. Add to this the often rich colors of clothes.

There's a lot of people commenting on how emotional flamenco music is. It's a lot like the Blues, you have to live it to put that emotion into it. I'm certain that if Gypsies listened to Etta James or Janis Joplin they would fully feel their music without understanding a single word.

Excellent song and storytelling. Some people think Flamenco is just about dancing and singing about long lost love but I love how this movie showed that Flamenco can also tell a story, an uncomfortable but true one. ;) Please give us more songs and don't forget the stories!

I can't believe how many people say they hate gypsies. You cannot say you hate an entire ethnic group unless you know all of them. People, not only at this video but also many other flamenco songs/videos on KZfaq, say they hate gypsies or label them as thieves. I strongly recommend those people to read deeply about the history of the Gypsy people, who have been persecuted in Europe for centuries by the Europeans themselves and who have been forced to live in poverty. Again, hating an entire ethnic group because of what stereotypes they have is ridiculous, and the only people who should be hated are those who hate others for who they are born as and can't change.

@@sailazineb9192 you are aware that culture is not only their stupid art, music and unique cuisine. That's just superficial. Why don't we talk about their hierarchies? How are women treated in their culture? Does arranged marriages are common? I am pro multiculturalism, but in order to achieve it you can't just look it as your are doing it right now.

💯💯Flamenco is one of those pure musical genres that is so raw and honest, that you can't help but fall completely powerless to its charm and submit on the spot without the slightest reservation. So sad this video was cut off in mid stride. I was really getting into it. I miss my years in Spain. I lived just a few hours North of Granada. There I found the Gypsy caves (mostly tourist traps) but always good and authentic flamenco, as well as the schools of flamenco and the student performances. The gypsies turned shouting into a haunting, never to be forgotten wail. And how they turned hand clapping into the sound of two hardwood blocks being struck together I'll never know. What a powerful musical language.

Let's start their whole groupstructure is based on love, caring for one another and family.. now how can they be bad? and they have always been underdogs of society... The cante jondo (deep song)was the original song form from where flamenco came from. It's a Gitano (gypsy) song. They later added guitar to it in the 1900s,which is where flamenco comes from. Rich aristocrats loved the sound, which is how it got so popular. Performers of flamenco agree that it was originally a Gitano art form. Also, there are more flamenco academies in Japan than anywhere else. It's like taiko (japanese drum), there's more taiko bands in LA, but it doesn't mean we made it.

Oh! You recognized that. The movie this song is from, called Latcho Drom(1993), actually depicts that and starts with Rajasthani folk songs. It's believed the Roma originated in India(Rajasthan), and as they were nomads they eventually migrated and settled in parts of Europe. Prominently, Romania, Portugal and the famous Andalucia(Spain), where Flamenco took its final form. That's why you see even the dance moves have similarities to Kalbeliya and Kathak. Also, the oscillations are called as Taan, which is like a passage. Phew!

I loved Flamenco before I met my Spanish wife, she is from the North of Spain and hates Flamenco so most of the concerts I go to are alone from the North to the south to the east and the west of Spain searching for my beloved music.
