Its sadder than that if you know the history. Imagine being ordered to abandoned the family you made while fighting in Spain. You helped her free her country you may have gotten married and had a child with her, then the order comes that your lewving and not allowed to take her with you, youre ordered to be a deadbeat.

For those who wish to sing along, pieced it as best I could: Farewell and adieu to you Spanish ladies, Farewell and adieu to you ladies of Spain, For we’ve received orders for to sail for Old England And we may never see you fair ladies again We’ll rant and we’ll roar, like true Irish sailors We’ll rant and we’ll roar all on the salt seas, Until we strike soundings in the Channel of Old England, From Ushant to Scilly is thirty-five leagues We hove to our ship, with the wind at sou’west, boys, We hove to our ship, deep soundings to take, In forty-five fathoms with a white sandy bottom, We squared our maintops’l, up the Channel did make We’ll rant and we’ll roar like true British sailors We’ll rant and we’ll roar all on the salt seas, Until we strike soundings in the Channel of Old England, From Ushant to Scilly is thirty-five leagues The first land we sighted was called the Dodman, Next Rame Head off Plymouth, Start, Portland, and Wight, We sailed by Beachy, by Fairlight and Dover, And then we bore up for the South Foreland light We’ll rant and we’ll roar, like true British sailors, We’ll rant and we’ll roar all on the salt seas, Until we strike soundings in the Channel of Old England, From Ushant to Scilly is thirty-five leagues Then the signal was made for the grand fleet to anchor, And all in the Downs that night for to lie; Let go your shank painter, let go your cat stopper, Haul up your clewgarnets, let tacks and sheets fly! We’ll rant and we’ll roar, like true British sailors, We’ll rant and we’ll roar all on the salt seas, Until we strike soundings in the Channel of Old England, From Ushant to Scilly is thirty-five leagues Now let every man drink up his full bumper, Now let every man drink up his full glass, We’ll drink and be jolly, and drown melancholy, And here’s to the health of each true-hearted lass We’ll rant and we’ll roar, like true British sailors, We’ll rant and we’ll roar all on the salt seas, Until we strike soundings in the Channel of Old England, From Ushant to Scilly is thirty-five leagues

@historygirl6732
@historygirl6732 9 ай бұрын
@@nilsbrown7996 As a sailor myself, it does seem as though we are speaking another language sometimes, I gotta say. In case you wanna know some of the jargon used in the song: -the "shank-painter" was a chain used to hold the anchor's shanks to the side of the ship and away from the water. -the "cat-stopper" chain had a similar, though more important function. When the shank-painter was loosed, all the anchor's weight rested from the cat-stopper. It was called that because it attached to the cathead, a wooden beam which held the anchor clear of the ship so that the hull would not be damaged. When time came to lower the anchor, the shank-painter would first be removed, and then the bosun would shout "let go the anchor!" and the ship's carpenter would strike away the wooden block (or, "dog") that kept the chain in place, letting the anchor fall. -"clew-garnets" were ropes that attached to the lower corners or sails (called clews) which were used to help furl them. Hope this helps! Great singing!

Here's mine: Mr. McGuinness has rapidly become a weight-bearing Colm in the Parthenon of my music taste.
