The world-famous white Lippizaner stallions from the Spanish Riding School in Vienna are spectacular to see, horse person or not. For many, myself included, the white Lipizzan stallions are the first introduction to the world of dressage. The magic and beauty of the stallions performing create an enchanting allure that wins the hearts and minds of fans around the world.
In the tradition of the Spanish Riding School, these two riders perform a duet or Pas De Deux. Watching this pair work in synch is a surprise and delight for all equestrians.
The Spanish Riding School Vienna is the oldest riding school and the only institution in the world where classical riding in the renaissance tradition of the "high school" has lived for more than 450 years and is still maintained - which is why it is also part of the intangible UNESCO cultural heritage of humanity . The task of classical equestrian art is to study the horse's natural disposition to movement and to cultivate it through systematic training in the highest possible elegance of the high school for the horse. The result of the training, in which man and horse are at eye level at all times, is an incomparable harmony between rider and stallion.
The name of the "Spanish" Riding School goes back to the 16th century: Ferdinand I, who later became Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, grew up in Spain and brought the magnificent Spanish horses from the Iberian Peninsula to the court in Vienna. The horses were considered to be particularly noble and docile and were therefore particularly suitable for classical riding. The white Lipizzaner stallions, who today enchant horse lovers from all over the world with their performances at the Riding School, are the descendants of this once proud Spanish horse breed - they originated from a cross between Spanish, Arab and Berber horses.
The stable
castle , in which 72 of the famous white stallions are housed, is Vienna's oldest and most important Renaissance building, it was built in 1565.
The term “riding school” is explained by the fact that its visit and use was previously reserved exclusively for the nobility. It mainly served the education and training of the young nobility in the art of riding. For this reason, Emperor Karl VI commissioned Josef Emanuel Fischer von Erlach to build the winter riding school. Between 1729 and 1735 "the most beautiful riding hall in the world" was built, the wonderful winter riding school in the Vienna Hofburg. The equestrian portrait of the monarch still adorns the magnificent baroque hall as thanks.

I find it absolutely insane that warmbloods dominate in modern sporting dressage when Lipizzaners, Andalusians, and Lusitanos are clearly more naturally suited to the exercises. People say they "don't have the right kind of movement", but that tells me the problem is with the judging, because what could be better than this?

I completely agree. Judging has always been biased towards certain types. I've experienced it myself. I gave up competition when I was passed over and a fellow competitor started yelling at the judges that I should have placed second and they were horse snobs and just didn't like my standard bred mare who had done everything right.
@cliffowens3629

It must also be remembered that Lippizaners are trained in the movements of war. Dressage is only a part. Further their geldings have also been used as carriage horses for the upper crusts of society. Plus they're not very big maybe 14 hands. Most dressage horses are impressive mounts of 16-18 hands. It could quite well be a bias of the judges to prefer the larger over the smaller. Besides, the Lippizaners have nothing to prove. Their history speaks for itself. I've seen them in the flesh at a performance. Truly spectacular.

@@merrynvanderwesthuizen1529 My wife had the same thing happen. She was riding an appaloosa mare in an open show and she never place a hoof wrong, yet the judge pinned another horse that faulted. The rider of that horse came over and gave my wife the higher award saying " Your horse deserves this. "

Since the point of there being a woman onboard, I had to do some sloothing. I found that the first woman, Hannah Zietlhofer, joined the ranks in 2008 when the Spanish Riding School agreed to admit a woman. She had apprenticed for 8 years. Currently, there are 2 women riders and 4 women assistant riders. And it only took a little over 400 years! 😆

Although I had a Hanoverian, I always strove to have the lightness that these horses have and when I achieved it, it was heaven! It was so soft and effortless. When we did half pass, I hardly had to do anything once we started. But it took so long to get there! So much sweat (on my part), so many years. But, it was worth the journey, that was the fun part, never the competitions. I wish all of you a good journey! My best tip: ride and train for a year without stirrups.

I watch as many videos as I find....these are such beautiful horses and the fact that their line almost disappeared is a tear jerker Changing subject a bit, when you mentioned riding bareback to develope your riding skills I remember watching our grandson learn to ski, same principle, He started at 3 where all the kids in class are without poles. No poles to depend on so they have to learn balance pretty quickly. His pictures are pretty funny. I'm glad you learned that way, always thought it taught great lessons and feelings of muscles your horses uses to follow instructions. I love these white horses and riders, such precision for all those in the ring at the same time. sigh once again.

I have gotten to see them perform twice so far and both times it was a beautiful performance and fun to watch. Now that I ride and train my own, its always nice to watch them again online and remind myself- This is what you're aiming for! 💖💖💖

I can watch these horses every day and remember my parents love. I saw them in person. My father took me. And what is greater it was His family story. He preserved the history for me. Completely as he could. Honestly and most wonderfully.

I saw them live in Toledo Ohio. It was a much longer performance with several references to their importance in a battle situation. Special memory. The first book I got after I could read was about these stallions. Lovely

this is so beautiful I cried. Maybe some dressage riders at the international level could take a leaf out of this wonderful book. Total harmony, riding at its best, horse and rider at one ... wonderful!

I saw them in Casper about 20 years ago. The only reason I remember how long is been is because I was pregnant with my oldest, and they just turned 20. It was one of the most amazing things I've ever seen.

This made me a little sad. When I was about 8, we went to see a Lipizzaner show with my parents. Mom INSISTED we go. sadly, mom passed away two years ago. This is bittersweet to see.

Oh How I love the Lipizzaners as much as I love Arabians, and Morgan horses. I had the chance to see the Lipizzaners performances in person a few times, what a show and what Precision timing, from both the horses and riders, was throughly amazing. The riders sit so still and are with their horses, that they make it look like an easygoing experience, when instead, it is hard work that accomplishes the smooth gates and maneuvers these horses perform. Also, it is the stallions that are mostly used here, not the mares. The mares are specifically kept as broodmares to carry on the line of the Lipizzaners legacy. It is also the older horses which do these maneuvers, and in the past, they were mostly trained for the battlefield. Their main area is in Vienna, Austria, thus the Spanish Riding School of Vienna Austria. There is a true story of the horses being rescued from extermination from the German army by General Patton in World War II. The Disney film, “ The Miracle of the White Stallions” is based upon this amazing story. These horses are in serious training from age 4 upwards, they don’t get really started with the more serious maneuvers until about age 7, and by age 12, if they have the abilities to do the more complicated maneuvers, are trained for the Capriole and another I’m unable to spell correctly. These maneuvers are hard on a horses legs and requires agility/athletic and endurance training. It takes years for them to develop the necessary muscle strength to do them. I have seen some of the Andalusians and Arabians do some of the dressage work but not the Capriole or other maneuvers which the Lipizzaners are famous for. These horses are unique in their own right and deserve the respect due them. Also, there are basically 6 or 8 stallion lines that goes back to ancient times. Pluto and Siglavy are just two of the 6 or 8 foundation stallions, and any offspring from any of these foundation stallions, carries that name along with another name in its registry. When I seen these amazing horses, I was able to get permission to pet them and/or give them a treat. They are amazing and beautiful animals. I was fortunate to have bought a couple of souvenirs from that event, one was a picture of the horse and rider and another was a necklace having the Lipizzaner figure on it. It was a great show and I loved every minute of watching it….HIGH 5….👍❤️🙏🏼🦄🎠🐎🐴
